This may seem strange, but I heve never been able to understand gear in this game. I don't get what you are looking for, so I just have to try all the drops and reqards on and see if it makes me hit harder. The wierd thing is... I am at lvl 64 on my DK, and still haven't gotten a drop or quest reward that is a better piece of armor or weapon than what Ihave on. Is this normal?

yes its normal. you really dont get anything "better" than what you left your starting area with until late 60s. even then, some people have been able to enter northrend with their normal starting gear.

additionally, the stats you'll usually be looking for are things with STR, attack power, crit, and stamina. if you're tanking, some defense works too.
things that are useless: Int. Spi. Block. Mp5. and i cant think of any more right now.

That brings me another question - when do the DK trinkets get replaced, and by what, if you're a tank ?

My DK is 73, I have maybe 6 northrend trinket in my bags (ilevel 138-146) and I can't for the heck of me tell if they are better for a tank than those default dodging proc, etc... we get out of starting area - can someone advice which are ?
(I have rating busters but the stats/proc aren't covered or overlap/compare - only the ilevel makes me think I should swap them,....)

How about checking wowhead about trinkets?
and EJ on breakdown for all needed stats on gear for every spec/class?
even WoWArmory can suggest ur next gear upgrade >.>

just my worthless 2¢

I use EQcompare and RatingBuster. This gives you a nice comparison of your current gear with the item that you have selected. It tailors the output based on the stats that are most likely for your class and spec.

Then you look for green (upgrade) versus red (downgrade) and make the call.

For more complicated gear issues i use RAWR to evaluate what i am going after next.

As I said I do have rating buster in game, the issue with the starting zone DK trinket is they have seemingly unique features - which seems good for a tank (parry and low health related) :

http://www.wowhead.com/?compare=38675;38259;37557;38674

Even though they are 1/2 the ilevel - they seem still better ?

Anyone with a DK tank - what trinkets do you use ? when did you replace the original ones ?

just my worthless 2¢I don't check wowhead because I don't know what I am looking for to find it. I also have no idea what EJ is. The whole reason that I am getting into boxing is because i'm never geared enough to do heroics or any of that, and I refuse to do crap just to grind for gear with the limited playtime that I have. I am just doing the quests, trying to get to 80 with something so that maybe I can start getting some gear, and actually enjoy doing it rather than feeling like its a grind.

But I appreciate the input.

Abit more info maybe?

Like what classes you are multiboxing?

Do you want him to use tank gear or dps gear?

You seem pretty fresh with Death Knights so i found this tread that cointains tons and tons of guides!

I equipped my tank with a lot of the starting blue outland gear with sockets, and stacked the +18 and +24 stam gems all over, and I feel incredibly OP. The Wotlk Gem curve makes even the 18 stam gems so cheap, I just bought a ton of em, many for 50 silver each. There's a dungeon drop in zangarmarsh thats a great 2h mace with 3 gem slots, so u can put 3 +24 stam gems in there and be godly. My DK is a tank for both a 4x ele sham team, and a 3x lock 1x resto sham team, and I hardly need any healing from either team.

For a tank your main stats are stamina, defense, and dodge. Parry and some hit are just under that. Expertise and strength a little under them. Agility is a distant last place tanking stat. Any other melee stats are ok for boosting threat but you shouldn't try to get them.

There's a blue trinket from a group quest in hellfire peninsula that has defense and I think increase health on use.

I guess I should have made a separate thread from the OP but any chance someone with DK tank level 72-80 would answer my question please ?
(which trinkets you used; when did you get them)

First, this is my dude.
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Bloodscalp&n=Khaas

The general rule is, get to 540 Defense, and get to around 30K HP unbuffed (easier than you think as a DK, and if you use the spec I have in that armory profile, it's really easy)
After 30K HP (or 25 at the absolute lowest) start gemming/enchanting for avoidance stats. Dodge, Parry (though I recomend taking Str over parry whenever able) and be sure to get some Expertise/Hit when possible as well. Around 25 Expertise is ideal. And the more hit the merrier. This is important because you want to reduce dodges, misses, and parries as much as possible. Remember always, misses generate no threat. As for the trinkets... I just used the starter trinkets then the one from the HFP Cruel's Intentions questline till I got 70ish, then switched to the JC trinkets. After that it was working toward raid level trinkets.

These are the two I used till I got Naxx level trinkets:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=44063 - Figurine - Dawnstone Crab
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=42341 - Figurine - Ruby Hare

At Heroic level there's 2 great trinket choices:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37220 - Essence of Gossamer
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40683 - Valor Medal of the First War (40 Emblems of Heroism) *I still use this one myself*

And finally, this can be quite helpful to you as you try to find suitable upgrades:

Just be sure to click the "Show Only Tanking Items" button.

Hope that helped.

my trinks have been dawnstone crab, but thats a jc trink.
and i got lucky getting gossemer on the first try.
if you're not a jc'er the emblem trink is pretty much your only other option. i couldnt find any other trinket that could replace the starting dk's trinkets.
