View Full Version : A bright idea! Scheduled screenshots of a region of the screen?

On my current team, my tank is my miner and skinner, and has Find Minerals active as usual. I want to add Herbalism to one of my alts. I've seen some clever ways for making an alt's minimap more visible so you can have the benefit of more than one "find" skill at a time, but was thinkin': it'd be pretty awesome if there were a program that would grab a region of the screen (the alt's minimap) and take regular screenshots of it on some non system-destroying schedule, perhaps once per second, and update those screenshots in a moveable window. You could place the window on your primary display next to your main's minimap and flag it "always on top" to give you an almost-realtime view of the alt's minimap wherever you want it.
I don't expect anyone to run out and write it for me, but can anyone think of a Windows utility that already does this, or could be used for the purpose? I can't think of an application outside of WoW where it'd be useful, but maybe?

Yeah, this would be handy. And would be nice if keyclone supported PiP with a specific region of a wow window for instance.
But the real question is if its ok with the ToS. Because frankly, its on the borderline of a cheesy greyzone imo.
I would love to have it though, and could imagine myself writing a program to do it. If its ok with the ToS its also possible to make an overlay of the two minimaps, compensating for different positions to within a certain degree, without too much hassle.

You may be able to do this with the Windows Media Encoder SDK. It's a free download from Microsoft.
The SDK documentation contains a page called "Using a Screen Capture as a Source." Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be online so I can't link to it.

minicap ('http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/MiniCap/index.html') + autohotkey should be able to do the the regional screencap on a schedule.
