at $6 a pop, long lead times on delivery, and a long line of potential users, it's not worth the constant hounding.

they should tack $2 on it to make some extra cash... of course, since they just came out with 'all add-ons must be free'...

Talk about a fucking headache. And iPhones are stolen daily - I doubt many thieves would go after your keyfob authenticator. Damn it all my posts keep getting ate :/

Why not use your keychain? Maybe when you can buy it with a banktransfer if you dont have a creditcard maybe...MAYBE, or some other reason so that your are forced to use this app.

Just buy a chain, leave it next to your computer and voila.

I switched from old physical auth to this one - one less thing to carry. great. That also forced me to switch to battle.net account - which would be great if

a) you could switch from 1 wow account to another from some ui - click back just sends you back to login

b) after using a toon - trying to switch realms just hangs; forcing you as well to reenter password

Note: it saves your (sub)account name too under your battle.net one when you check the "remember account" box - which is fine for me

Probably giving it away for free because less account restores = less people required to do account restores and saves them money in the long run. I wouldn't be surprised to see authenticators in some form mandatory down the the line.

I'm looking into the app, before I activate it, I have an e-mail in to find out what you'd need to do if your phone breaks or is lost or stolen (probably the same thing as when people are keylogged - prove it's your account, blah blah blah). Replacing the app is easy, just redownload it, but in the case of a stolen phone, obviously that means attaching a new app, and I'd like to know how that works.

I'm not worried about my phone being stolen, I use the iPhone so much, I always know where it is, and I don't leave it anywhere unattended. My office is a secure one that requires a keycard to get into, and I never leave it in the car.


I'm surprised there's not a Blackberry version of this app, along with the iPhone app. Or one for the G1.

I cannot even find the Authenticator listed in the Blizzard Store anymore.
It used to show up as not available or out of stock most of the time.
Not sure if Blizzard is phasing the physical product out for this alternative.

I am putting the line at 2 months.

The algorithm is tied to the serial number printed on each. Even if they break it they need to know what serial your authenticator is. If there are only 10-20 different serials (and they knew them all) maybe they could brute force through the code. Software authenticator might be different and not have multiple serials, in that case it would suck.

The algorithim is public for the physical devices. The important part is the private key...
Either way you'll need physical access to the device or serial to get it :)

Double checked with someone that has it, it does generate a serial number when you install it to tie to your account so even if someone did reverse engineer the algorithm they're still SOL for figuring out which "version" to run.

Without the private key, even having the source code is meaningless.

As said above - good security doesn't rely on "crackable" software - the software should generate a unique private key that you would need to get.

Now I suppose having a worm that would hack and get your private key and send it to some site where it would be harvested ... that's possible (I expect the app to store the private key in a mac like OS level keychain; but if it can be retrieved by the software it can be retrieved by a hacked application... so if you see a new "Cool new Wow something" app showing up from unknown source; don't install it on same iphone as your blizz auth one!)
