I was at work at the firestation. I had no way to update because it took out my laptop. One of the virus files was installed from break.com. It was like av something .exe. The other virus was downloaded when I was reading wowwiki.com. It was called fuck3.exe. One virus was downloaded from edwardhomepage.info and the other usabreakingnews.com. I can only assume it was from some advertisement inserted on the websites. My laptop had win xp installed with avg. For some reason the resident scan was not on. I am not sure if that would have caught it or not. I am reinstalling win xp right now on my laptop. Use caution if you visit those websites. If anyone knows a good way to protect from these type of virus attacks I am all ears. I was using Internet Explorer to view both sites.

It's ok, there's a simple fix: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html
It's terrible that these sites are spreading this crap, but you can take steps to protect yourself.

This is a rediculous zelotry. Get IE8, patch your computer, don't be a retard and you're fine. Using anything thats old will get you infected if you're dumb. Firefox is a huge ass memory whore that is slow as balls.

Well, he does work for Microsoft. But in defense of Microsoft, they do provide the appropriate tools to handle these situations. I'm using the Windows 7 beta right now on my other four machines and I'm going to upgrade EVERY windows box I have once Windows 7 is commercially available. And before anyone accuses me of being a Microsoft whore, I have a couple Apple machines, two Ubuntu servers, and five windows boxes (one is my primary system, and the other four run my alts). In all fairness, Microsoft isn't at fault here.

Not often you see someone take that stance.LOL Seriously. I'm sorry if my preference over firefox seems like zealotry. It seems that making such a simple change in what program you use that has SO many benefits over its competitor should be something everyone should do. I apologize if my "zealotry" offends you, isn't Suvega a Microsoft Employee? His defense also seems pretty zealot like. No worries, I'm loyal to my employer as well. But not at the expense of someone else's security. Sure, patch your computer and don't be a retard, but how about NOT using a browser that is the main target of so many exploits?

My point was, that an argument that "Oh you're just using the wrong browser you stupid idiot!" was a bit rediculous.
Every firefoxy nerd (Btw, I do use linux for a home server, and I use firefox at times as well, not that it should matter for this conversation but hey..), always spouts about how more secure firefox is then IE.
Unfortunetly it's a blatent lie. Find me any hard data from a reliable source comparing the security of a fully patched / up to date browser against the other. Even the pwn-to-own competition the first browser to get wrecked was safari. GG.
Between using vista, the default browser with automatic updates. Even with ABSOLUTELY NO ANTI VIRUS SHIT, OR ANTI-SPYWARE shit, I've remained virus free for over 2 years?
ZOMG THE SECURITY VULNERABILITIESS!!!!111!1!1!one one!

ZOMG THE SECURITY VULNERABILITIESS!!!!111!1!1!one one! Running Vista here, using IE rarely and Firefox primarily - no anti virus, no anti spyware - 2+ years virus free.
Now i'm on Windows 7 and still no problems.

How would you detect a virus with no anti-virus shit? RUH ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH. :PIt's pretty easy, your computer starts running like shit, pop ups fly all over hell and gone, your ISP notifies you to clean up or be disconnected, etc... When my machine got hit with Blaster so many years ago I knew it within seconds.

Sorry I don't mean to derail the Firefox VS. IE debate but the OP made one comment that was a lot more worrisome to me then that he was using IE (and I ride on the firefox bandwagon).
For some reason the resident scan was not on This is what a large number of viruses and worms do, they shut down your AV scans. It is possible that you have been infected for longer then you think and through that infection your AV stuff was disabled and likely being prevented from updating. It is also possible that this is where the two viruses you did find came from.
I would clean like crazy at this point if I was you.

What I like about NoScript is that it defaults to not allowing scripts to run unless you allow them. It's not 100% foolproof, but it can block a lot of content if you're willing to take the time to properly configure it as you visit websites.

I ran avg to clean the viruses. It found them all and said it cleaned them. However, they were right back after the clean. I said screw it and reinstalled my OS. The laptop is using xp. Dispite the Foxfire vs IE fight here there has been some good info. Thanks for the suggestions.
BTW that damn virus erased all my system restore points.

While I may not agree with Suvega's "just make sure you update" philosophy, I'd say I'd agree with the argument that...
"Just run x browser" <-- bad argument.
"Make sure your computer is up-to-date" <-- good advice, but not 100% either
NO browser is foolproof, and putting all your eggs in the browser fanboi basket (whether you prefer one or the other) is generally a dumb idea. Using your browser (whichever it is) PROPERLY and utilizing proper 'netiquette is the REAL solution -- though, like Fur said, the chances of that happening is pretty slim given the typical "I want it, I want it now, I don't care" attitude that we've grown into thanks to having everything on the 'web just a click away.
So yea, I'd agree with Suvega that "Just use firefox" was bad advice -- I also agree that "Just use IE8" would be similar bad advice -- regular virus scanning, safe browsing habits, and a proper backup plan when viruses do happen is a more realistic solution.
I think Firefox's reputation as the anti-virus browser is a bit of a stretch -- it may be slightly better or slightly worse, but let's remember that the current state of affairs in the virus world is dynamically changing, so the percentile rate of infection may be low now, and may not be in the future -- we don't know. Telling someone "If you use Firefox, you won't get viruses" is just false advertisement. "Firefox has a x% smaller chance of virus infections over the past y months" is more appropriate -- I honestly don't know the numbers here, nor how they relate to IE/Safari, but at the very least "Firefox has a history of fewer/more viruses compared to x browser" is still more appropriate. Regardless, it's totally irrelevant to the OP's problem since we neither know which browser they're using nor whether the issue was related to browser insecurities or something else -- the OP's trying to help people by giving them fair warning, so dragging your favorite browser advertisement speech is a bit off-topic.
Unless you're totally unplugged from the outside world, the reality is that viruses continue to adapt and that, sometime and someday - IE or Firefox - scripts or noscripts, you will probably get one even with careful planning. So, like the OP seems to be doing with reimaging his machine, it's best to make regular backups of important files and be prepared when that sneaky little virus does rear its ugly head on your system.

That's not safe. It looks like some damn user is about to plug in the network cable so they can start downloading spyware.

Moral of the story is get something that blocks adds and doesn't run everything, like java random pluggins ...
yeh know like firefox with adblock and noscript
Default firefox aint no better then IE but firefox allows yeh fairly painless way of fixing it with addons
"Firefox's reputation as the anti-virus browser "
its not that firefox is better at dealing with virus its just that its easier to change firefox's "default allow everything"

I must say it's nearly impossible to receive a virus/spyware/adaware/etc-aware by using X web browser as long as you don't install browser addons or download and run software. Unknowingly install software, and you're done for. There are only a few pieces of software that are okay for the common user to install: Macromedia Flash, Shockwave, and JRE. If you can't browse the web using only these "addons", then you're fucked.
Of course I keep an unbiased attitude when someone comes in my shop that "has a virus" and goes on to say they're all over myspace and facebook, but deep inside I couldn't hate social networking sites any more.
No one wants to see a grainy webcam picture of your 12-year-old daughter's ass. Sorry!

Every now and then, in addition to running avg, I'll run Rootkit Revealer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897445.aspx) as an added check. Maybe that would be a good next step if your issues are persistant? (I'm no security guru, though, so one of these super smart peeps can verify)
And, not sure if this is relevant to the OPs situation, but if you're running firefox, one of the first things I set up with it on a new machine is go to Tools > Options > Privacy and set states on the following
1. uncheck - Remember what I enter in forms and the search bar
2. check - accept cookies from sites (set any exceptions)
2a. uncheck - accept third-party cookies
2b. set 'Keep until' to 'I close Firefox'
3. check - Always clear my private data when I close Firefox
3b. settings - click the settings tab and check every box
4. uncheck - Ask me before clearing private data
Then everytime I close my browser (you have to close them all) it clears my browsing, download, search and form history, the cache, cookies, offline website data, any saved passwords, and authenticated sessions.
I don't know if there is an automated option for clearing all those items on close in IE.

I am actually a fan of MS and really like almost everything they do. However I use Firefox for 1 reason. When I close the browser, or it crashes, it will open again with all the same tabs it closed with. IE7 and 8 kind of do this, but it always involves extra clicks or saving "favorite groups". All more effort then I want to put in.
I also feel much safer with Ad-Blocker and No script in Firefox.
I really wish MS added those 3 features with IE8.
