View Full Version : best two professions to min/max stats?

I'm slowly running out of stuff to upgrade (without getting some arena rating) and may finally take the plunge into professions. My main goal is to min/max stats, so duplicate professions across all shaman is probably a given.
I'm considering enchanting/jewelcrafting but my only concern about JC is that epic gems (which are probably on the horizon) may replace the JC gems?
Other combo I'm looking into is enchanting/leatherworking for the bracer enchants (but not much else I guess).
opinions?

You could go two gathering professions if you didnt want to decide. This way you'd have cash coming in from selling all mats and you get bonus's from them.
I have Leatherworking and Mining on alot of my toons for the crit and stam add. Herbalism rejen is nice at lower lvls but for higher levels its lacking.
Also you can lvl this very fast seeing as you can have every toon skin and every toon mine the same node/dead item. Just have them not loot and then let the next toon skin/mine.

Min/maxing as a boxer seems a little nuts to me, but I think BS/JC synergize + max the best currently and depending how epic gems/JC gems turnout, this may stay the case in the future.

Any future patch will change the min/max professions. There's no way to know what professions will be getting what till it hits the PTR. What if they finally put in epic JC trinkets? Higher tier epic BoP LW mail pieces? Wrath Blacksmithing BoP weapons? Just go with the best now: JC+BS or JC+Enchanting.

Umm the whole mine node i thought they stopped that. I tried and it said tapped. It seems like when one taps it you cant tap it on another toon. But if you've had success gratz. Oh and on the professions i have an enchanter/ inscriber. Awesome user only enchants and same with some user only shoulder enchants that are actually better then the rep ones. Bs/jc is nice you get added sockets user only trinkets rings and neck pieces. But mining/skinning on my tank is the best i ever did. Added crit for added threat and added stam for staying alive longer lol.
Since I decided to drop shamans from my group and sub in a Boomkin, Disc Priest, and Mage I also decided to rethink my tradeskills.
DK Tank - JC / Enchanting
Ele Shaman - JC / Inscriptions
Mage - JC / Tailor
Boomkin - JC / Leatherworking
Priest Heals - JC / Alchemy
My other shamans have other trades covered, like mining, smithing, and one's an engineer so I can make mana and health pot injectors, and ... mechano hogs.
The Dragon's Eye gems are hot, and the daily Quest is nice for quick extra monies. I honestly thought about getting Inscriptions for the easy shoulder enchant, but meh.
i just leveled jc on my main solo dk tank and all i can say is its gonna be nuts x5. there's a couple spots where you pretty much have to rely on the ah for some stuff like truesilver and aquamarine mainly due to the large amounts of each you need. all the gold in the world wont help you if, as it was in my case, there's only like 2 aquamarine on the ah every day. also it takes about 20 or so huge emeralds and they were sorta rare too. but it is the best. the dragons eye gems are sweet and the monarch crab with solid sky sapphire in the blue slot and a solid dragons eye in the yellow is a super nice stam trinket for your dk.
so start reading the leveling guides and hoarding mats ahead of time so you don't get stuck and frustrated when the ah is depleted.
edit: spelling
I have 4 Bank tabs, and 3 bank alts with nothing but JC mats on them. I'm not too concerned atm.
That, and I'm levelling mining on 2 different characters too. For the Aquamarines, etc best option is to prospect ores.
Today I got 2 of my toons to 300 JC.

to get to 350+ JC on 4 guys (tank was already maxed) it took 10kg+

epic JC gems are not in patch 3.1, probably patch 3.2. So JC is "the best" for at least another 6 months. There are 4-5 new epic gems in patch 3.1 you get from fishing, but they are unique-equipped. Second best would be LW for bracer enchant, inscription for shoulder, or tailoring for new cloak enchant (+250 spell dmg, 45 sec hidden c/d, effectively making it +83 spell dmg assuming always casting).

Thanks guys. It does look like you can still tap a mining node several times to get the skill up, just don't loot it until it's the last character. be an easy one to level up 5x just for the stamina
As far as JC, what makes it worth it over the others, especially if you don't use trinket? Quick comparison of stam vs spellpower (JC offers some other things but):
JC
+51 stamina
or
+39 sp
Enchanting
+48 stamina
or
+38 sp
Mining:
+50 stamina
LW:
+50 stamina
or
+37 sp
Guess the only real benefit I see of JC is being able to mix and match things a bit more, with resil or spell penetration or whatever else is needed.. other than that.. worth 10-20k gold?

JC also lets you activate your meta and match socket colors easier. Normally you don't want to always match socket colors because even with the bonus, pure spellpower/stam/whatever gems end up ahead. The 3 JC gems you get match any color, so stick them in your off-color sockets for bonuses. Also with the JC gems, it counts as 3 red, 3 blue, 3 yellow for metas so you never have to worry about making sure your meta is activated.

Today I got 2 of my toons to 300 JC.Jewelcrafting x 5 is a cash cow. I did this as well with my main characters, and I don't regret the decision. On my original serv (Burning Legion), Dragon's Eyes were going for 150+ gold ea. On my new serv (I gave in an rolled Alliance...still leveling my toons), Wildhammer, DE's are going for 120-150g ea. Even if you were to buy all of the materials (at last check the ah prices would run around ~10,000g for 5 toons), you'd make that back in 2.5 weeks, selling the Dragon's Eyes x5 at 120 each. The quest will take you about 5 mins to do, and you'll also earn 15g per character for your troubles @ 80. Definitely a winning situation.

Nope, not in my opinion. BUT YOU SAID YOU WANTED TO Min/Max in your original post. The JC numbers are the best ones there, plus it lets you socket best-in-slot gems withouth losing socket bonuses as noted by other posters in this thread.
Don't forget those yummy trinkets. They have sockets, and they're quite nice. If it's for your alt toons trinkets "can" be hard to come by. And if you plan on running them in raids, the hit on that caster trinket is just what the doctor ordered.
The JC Blue trinkets are also among the best stamina trinkets in game right now. My tnak has defense ranting coming out of her ears... 2 JC stamina trinkets give her the kind of health pool that healers love....
Very good point, right now I'm at 31K+ unbuffed with epic trinkets. But if I toss my old blue trinkets on that's a ton of extra HP.

I am soo glad you asked this question and have gotten some good responses. I have been trying to rap my mind around this same question. My shammys are 74 and will be 80 very soon. I am looking to try to give the VERY BEST edge in the arena. So this is what i have come up with so far:
Alchemy:
Pro's
Endless Healing Potion (can use in the arena, 3 min CD, reusable forever) heals for 1680 to 2160 health (don't think plus to heal increases the effect, but is increased with the alchemy ticket) - http://thottbot.com/i43569
Endless Mana Potion (can use in the arena, 3 min CD, reusable forever) restores 400 to 600 mana (is increased with the alchemy ticket) - http://thottbot.com/i43570
Mercurial Alchemist Stone, (trinket) +50 to haste, +59 to spell power, increases the effect that healing and mana potions have on the wearer by 40% (not top of the line imo) - http://thottbot.com/i44322
Indestructible Alchemist's Stone, (trinket) +75 to stam (750 hp), +50 dodge, increases the effect that healing and mana potions have on the wearer by 40% (not a DPS trinket) - http://thottbot.com/i44323
Con's
A pot could be both good and bad requiring you to click when you need it.
Trinkets are not top of the line imo..
If trinket is used, requires a trinket slot
Without the trinkets, there is no passive plus to damage or survivability
Blacksmithing:
Pro's
Socket Bracer (does not remove enchants, does not affect socket bonus, can add to item that has socket already, can only add one socket per bracer, cannot put a meta gem into it) - http://thottbot.com/s55628
Socket Gloves (does not remove enchants, does not affect socket bonus, can add to item that has socket already, can only add one socket per bracer, cannot put a meta gem into it) - http://thottbot.com/s55641
Con's
Only getting 2 gems slots (Largest single gem types (not unique-equipped): +15 Stam, +12 Spell Power, +10 Crit....)
Enchanting:
Pro's
Enchant Ring Stats, + 4 to all stats (two rings = 8 to all stats)- http://thottbot.com/s27927
Enchant Ring Greater Spellpower, +19 to spell power ( two rings = 38 to spell power) - http://thottbot.com/s44636
Enchant Ring Stamina, + 24 Stam (two rings = 48 stam, 480 hp) - http://thottbot.com/s59636
Con's
Cant think of any
Engineering:
Pro's
Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket, attaches to gloves, Deals 1035 to 1265 fire damage (not sure if spell damage or crit effects this), Instant Cast, 0-45 yards, can not enchant gloves, does work in the arena, 1 min CD (i have conflicting reports if this item sets off the 1.5 Gobal Cool Down) - http://thottbot.com/s54998
Hyperspeed Accelerators, attaches to gloves, +340 haste for 10 seconds, 2 min CD - http://thottbot.com/s54999
Gnomish Lightning Generator (trinket), hits 2610 to 3190 Nature Damage (unknown if Spell Power or crit effects this, reported that it hits for 3-4 K and crits for 4.5-8 K), instant Cast, 1 min cd (i have conflicting reports if this item sets off the 1.5 Gobal Cool Down), can use Pyro Rockets and Lighting Generator at the same time - http://thottbot.com/i41121
Nigh Invulnerability Belt, +21 Stam, when used it protects you with a shield that stops 4000 damage for 8 seconds, 5 Min CD - http://thottbot.com/i23825
Con's
LOL prolly the largest con's on the list. Everything can back fire hurting you, but most is at a %10 rate.
Unknown if the if the Generator or Rockets are on a Gobal Cool Down.
Can't enchant Gloves if rockets or hyperspeed is used.(Largest glove enchant types: +28 Spell Power, +16 Crit..)
If Generator is used, requires a trinket slot..
there is no passive plus to damage or survivability
Need to know what these damage items hit against a level 80 with a ton of resil gear. Anyone know?
Herbalism:
Pro's
Lifeblood, heals you for 2000 hp over 5 seconds (Not sure if plus to healing helps or not), 3 min CD - http://thottbot.com/s55503
Con's
there is no passive plus to damage or survivability
Inscription:
Pro's
Master's Inscription of the Crag, +61 spell power and +6 mana every 5 seconds to shoulders - http://thottbot.com/s61118
Master's Inscription of the Storm, +61 spell power and +15 Crit to shoulders - http://thottbot.com/s61120
Con's
Little help here please... i dont know the best Shoulder enchant available.... but whatever it is... you have to take these shoulders and subtract them to see your benefit

Jewelcrafting:
Pro's
Runed Dragon's Eye, + 32 Spell Power (Fits any Color Slot, can only use 3 jeweler's gems equippted) - http://thottbot.com/i42144
Quick Dragon's Eye, +27 Haste Rating (Fits any Color Slot, can only use 3 jeweler's gems equippted) - http://thottbot.com/i42150
Smooth Dragon's Eye, +27 Crit (Fits any Color Slot, can only use 3 jeweler's gems equippted) - http://thottbot.com/i42149
Solid Dragon's Eye, +41 Stamina (Fits any Color Slot, can only use 3 jeweler's gems equippted) - http://thottbot.com/i36767
Figurine Twilight Serpent (trinket) +42 hit rating, when used +292 spell power for 20 seconds, 2 min CD, Has 1 red and 1 blue socket (+7 Spell Power Bonus) - http://thottbot.com/i42395
Con's
This profession is very deciving or at least confusing imo... you can already get gem types (not unique-equipped): +15 Stam, +12 Spell Power, +10 Crit, +10 Haste..).
example: 41 Stam - 15 Stam = 26 stam per gem is the benefit/78 stam for all three
example: 32 Spell - 12 Spell = 20 Spell per gem is the benefit/60 Spell for all three
example: 27 Crit - 10 Crit = 17 Crit per gem is the benefit/51 Crit for all three
example: 27 Haste - 10 Haste = 17 Haste per gem is the benefit/51 Haste for all three
There are better trinkets imo..If trinket is used, a trinket slot will be required
SOMETHING TO NOTE: Keep in mind that there are lot of unique-equipped gems that are better then the none unique gems. If you will be using a lot of gem slots, then this profession will be stronger then if you where to use less gem slots.
Leatherworking:
Pro's
Drums of Speed, Increases movement speed of nearby party members by 15% for 30 seconds, 2 min CD - http://thottbot.com/i29530
Jormungar Leg Reinforcements, +55 Stam and 22 Agility to Legs - http://thottbot.com/s60583
Fur Lining Spell Power, +67 Spell Power to bracers - http://thottbot.com/s57691
Fur Lining Stamina, +90 Stam to bracers - http://thottbot.com/s57690
Con's
The leg reinforcements are not the best for enchant/armor patch/spellthread this item imo..
Normal enchant to bracers are +40 stam or +30 spell power
example: 90 Stam - 40 Stam = 50 stam is the benefit
example: 67 Spell - 30 Spell = 37 Spell is the benefit
Mining:
Pro's
Toughness, +50 Stam (Passive) - http://thottbot.com/s53040
Con's
Cant think of any
Skinning:
Pro's
Master of Anatomy, +32 to Crit (Passive) - http://thottbot.com/s53666
Con's
Cant think of any
Tailoring:
Pro's
Lightweave Embroidery, applied to cloak, chance on hit to cause 1000 to 1200 Holy Damage when you damage an enemy with a spell (not sure if it is increased with spell power), internal 45 second cd, ignores resistances, does not stack with enchants - http://thottbot.com/s55642
Darkglow Embroidery, applied to cloak, chance on hit to restore 300 mana when you cast a spell, internal 45 seconds CD, does not stack with enchants - http://thottbot.com/s55769
Master's Spellthread, +50 Spell power and +30 Stam, applied to legs - http://thottbot.com/s56034
Con's
Can not enchant cloak with anything else. (+23 Haste, +225 armor, +35 Spell Penetration..)
Kind of dumb, but the Spellthread is both a lower level profession skill required tailoring and a higher level profession skill available for everyone.
Well i hope this has helped you look at all of the professions and will help you make an informed decision. Me personally, i am still on the fence about what profession i am going to choose, but i am kind of leaning toward engineering and jewelcrafting. If you noticed i got something wrong (granted i did use thottbot) or missed an item or would just like add another point of view. Please help me/us out before we spend all this time/gold to level our professions.
Also, i tried to keep time it will cost, gold it will cost and benefit of that ease out of the equation. We all know that it is not cost effective to spend 3 weeks to just to get an item that only has 1 stam more... but that is not the topic. Just think of this as if you could build your toon however you wanted without no cost... LOL

Twaman,
Where are you getting your JC stats?
Max SP gem is 19 http://thottbot.com/i39998
Max Stam gem is 24 http://thottbot.com/i40008
etc....
Also, just to make it a little clearer, max mining gives you 500 health, not 50 stam. (I.e. not benefit from kings/talents)
Also (again :P) You didn't include rocket boots for engineering.

JC only BoP Gems that are unique(3) and have better stats. 32 spell power and 41 stam. Mining adds stamina not direct hitpoints, this was changed recently in a patch.

another thing to consider is the +10% stam talents

I just did a search on thottbot... weird... thottbot bot only has those gems rated as a level 80 item and the ones i posted as and example a 100 level item. I didnt look that far now the list to see them. http://thottbot.com/?gem=All#A:::-6 That beening said... that makes JC not as appealing to me now. Thank you for showing me that.
Also, did they change the mining? It shows mining does give 50 stam?? http://thottbot.com/s53040 is this wrong?
I thought they made it so that the boots are no longer aloud in the arena?

Ah, I could have sworn there was a post on arena junkies saying it was bugged, but I can't seem to find anything about it so I guess they do give 50 stam.
As far as rocket boots go, they can still be used in arena. They nerfed their time from 5 seconds to 2 seconds last patch though.

What do you guys think about 5 shammys with Engineering and Tailoring.
Damage trinket 3-4K damage + the hand rockets 1-1.5k damage + Back enchant for 1-1.2k damange = 5-7k extra damage at the start per shammy... x5 shammys 25-35k (Not including crits) extra damage opener. I just wish i knew if the trinket and rockets are on the GCD. If that is true that they are not on the GCD, then you could open up on 2 targets at once i think.
Thoughts??

Engineering is gimmicky, if you like all the toys go for it. Id never drop it off my my rogue i have so much fun with it. But for my shamans i think tailoring/engi offered the least of all profs. I believe the lightweave for cloak is getting changed to a spell power buff proc in 3.1 (fake edit: The Lightweave tailoring enchant now sometimes grants a temporary spell power bonus instead of dealing direct damage to your target. as per the ptr notes"
My shamans and druids are all JCers, the prismatic gems are just to handy for me to get socket bonuses and meta requirements. Then i have a mix of chanting/BS/LW.

i was broswing the wotlkwiki recently (found here (wotlkwiki.info/) for those that dont know it) and they have projected epic gems (maybe leaked info, who knows) and they still wont be better than the JC only gems...could be mis-information but food for thought nonetheless.

Wow.... I guess tailoring is out. Hmmm, I see the value in JC gems, it can be hard to put the colors/stats you are trying to stack in the sockets to get your set bonus. But sometimes those set bonuses suck and aren’t even worth using a gem of that color just for the set bonus. Also, if you can use gems that are available to everyone vs the ones that only JCers can use. Is that increase in stats really more then... lets say mining (50 stam)?
Hey Mamut, do you know if the engineering trinket/rocket affects the GCD? Meaning, can you cast them and immediately perform an action directly after without waiting for the 1sec for rogues and 1.5 for everyone else? Also, how much do they hit for on average against a lvl 80 simi well geared pvp (resil) player?
