NO INSTANCES!!!
if u dont do instances ull have a load butt of money.. also!, on the main (the one screen ur always looking at), pick up herb, mining, or both.. (just the gathering.. others are not good waste of time), and as u lvl, to pick up all the nodes as u go, when u hit 80, ull be right at 450. Just keep putting the herbs in the bank, and then sell them all at 80.. Ull get like 5k gold..+..
As of right now (my group or 3), is 72.. from lvl 70-71.5 i made 1.5k gold.. as the quests give me more and more, around 76+, I will have even more gold from these quests, and ill end up with around 20k gold (i have a 4th toon that will be added soon), from all the quests and greens and stuff.
Hope this helps..

I got tons of gold from instances mostly from vendoring everything. I did not gather so i don't know how it compares. The downside is that it takes a damn long time to loot everything in an instance.

Be selective about what spells/abilities you buy until after you get past 60. If you are a caster, just buy the new versions of your most powerful damage spells, and if you can rez, just buy the cheapest one to have it. If your class has a travel form, try to get along using it until much higher level.

When I moved servers I didnt have any assets to use. I was poor till outlands. My druids still dont have any feral skills purchased at level 71. When you get to outlands and the quest rewards go from 40s t 2g and up it all changes. At 60 I think I had 8g to my name after buying all the new spells. By level 64 I had all my spells (-feral) and epic land mounts. You just level too fast on too few of quests and rewards to buy it all pre 60 with RAF.

I started out with a class that needed the smallest amount of cash to survive:
WARLOCKS!
With a 5xWarlock team, I was able to get along, only buying new Corruption, CoA and Shadowbolt for offense, the void did the hard work and eventually the felguard. but the cash that team saved, was passed on to the next team to make their life easier. I also used all cloth drops to get tailoring up, so my teams had bags.

At least one slave should have skinng (/assist focus /cast Skinning).
Primary should have herb and mining which should be maintained (leveled).
Slave should have herb or mining for tracking purposes only, dont bother maintaining its level.
Bank/Mule/AH toons should not be underestimated. Cloth is a great market, and most db combos include healers so FA becomes someone trival.
Im sure theres more... Im just lazy.

if you forgot to pickup skinning you can level it up in about 2 hours (once you hit 60)
here's a quick rundown of how i did it on my groups that didn't have it
1-50 Just outside the starting area for Night elves
pickup new skill at 50 from trainer in area
50-125 darkshore and Ashenvale
get to astranaar at 125 and fly back to Darnassus to get skillup
125-200 Ashenvale
at 200 get to stormwind or Ironforge and get skillup
200-280 Stranglethorn Vale
280-300 Winterspring, Burning Steppes or any other high level zone 55+ take your pick (i personally prefer Winterspring, but i have spent so much time there grinding Frostsaber rep i'm biased :P )

If you had started out horde side on Magtheridon we would have hooked up you with bags and startup gold. :)
As someone else stated, I did a lot of instance grinding and sold spoils on AH. Gathering professions help a lot as well.

58. or do some quests in hfp and get to 60 and make it that much easier in plaguelands. lol. but yea... cant leave starting area at 55.
i would... do lowbie areas til i get briarthorn. hit hillsbrad/stv until i can get liferoot. run to wetlands (horde or alliance) and farm there (liferoot and everything else). then do one circle through arathi basin and head to hinterlands from 220-290 (250 for ghost mushrooms). WPL til 320. outlands after that.
bulk of your money will be made in hinterlands, some WPL, and outlands.

If you place skinning on your main you will be able to see if theres a quest item on a skinnable target even if your main have the quest completet as you cannot skinn the target until the group member have picked up the item.
I find that usable sometimes.... but I do some collectionquest, if they are a part of a quest chain (since I don't have RAF :( :( )

Excellent suggestion. Any ideas for mobs other than beasts? I keep missing those "this item starts a quest" type drops.

-KKnowledge really. Just knowing the quests for the area your in. If a mob drop starts a quest there are only a few examples where everyone in the party does not get the item. (like the old history book drop in Duskwood).
Drop quests I have recently done...
Deed quest drop from humanoids in Elywnn Forest (for farmer just inside of Westfall). That book that drops off of Dino's in Un'Goro. For draenie the little kitties on the second area drop a crystal starting a kill quest for them (irradiate cats of some sort)
I think the best thing to do if you can is prestock certain quest items that you can do so before, even on a server new to you Un'Goro power crystals are usually dirt cheap and many food items needed by low level quests can sometimes be found cheaply as well (gooey spider legs, etc)

If you're doing the boosting way to level a RAF team have the booster an enchanter and loot and disenchant EVERYTHING. Yeah it takes a little longer but you will make a crap ton of money from selling the disenchanted mats on the ah.
