When I got to 80 I tried a heroic on the advice that I found abundant everywhere of "oh, just hop on into heroics at 80, I cleared my first heroic within the first 5 minutes of dinging 80 in all greens and some greys I enchanted for fun!" and I got stomped. I wasn't even able to the trash in instances.

I've bought everything I could think of for my 3 warlocks, but they still sit around 1300 spell power unbuffed (1500 buffed) and put out pathetic damage. I can now down 3 bosses in Gundrak reliably and I've downed the fourth (the elemental/rock boss) one time. I made about 10 attempts on the last boss and never came close to beating him.

I'm looking ahead with the few emblems of heroism I've bought to see what gear I can upgrade and my enthusiasm to keep going drains away. I've got 27 emblems and the next thing that would be worth buying costs 50. That's 8 days of heroics to get one piece of gear (gloves) and I've already got epic gloves. From there it's 80 tokens (18 days if I don't get the gloves) to get a chestpiece that I could really use. And there's no epic caster gear I could even use from Gundrak.

I can't defeat the instances because of gear (it seems to me anyway), and I can't get gear because I can't clear the instances. Seems like a catch-22. Is it me or is the only reason to even do heroics at this point for me just to get to exalted with factions and use the faction epics?

This was already a huge grind for me to go from 1-80 (without recruit a friend!), grind out epic mounts, grind out money for some gear, only to look forward and see a huge faction grind before I can finish a heroic.

Alternately, I could try PUGing my warlocks but that seems to defeat the whole purpose of me boxing. I hated dealing with pugs.

My shaman are 73 and my DK is 78. I dont even have epic ground trained on my shaman.
I'm saving everything from now until 80 for craftable sets maybe. Try saving up some honor and get some bargain epics ?

You're trying to do this the hard way. Honestly, multiboxers have one HUGE strength - we can earn money SUPER fast doing dailies.

Its just painful to jump into heroics when you're way undergeared. Do dailies for a few days, make thousands of gold, then buy yourself a HUGE leap in gear all in one sitting.

When I hit 80, I finished all my storm peaks and icecrown quests in a few days and had like 20k gold. I spent it all in 1 day buying all sorts of BoE epics, gems, enchants, etc, and walked into my first heroic about a week after hitting 80 with something like 1600+ sp on my shamans and my tank was uncrittable with ~23k hp and 19% dodge and 15% parry.

This is far FAR less painful then trying to master heroics while controlling all 5 characters and undergeared to boot.

Main thing is your tank. Make sure you have BoE epics on your tank and/or take them solo to some 10 man Naxx to gear up. Once your tank has better gear, heroics will be much easier. Might also need to have your priest spec holy/disc if they aren't already, but it largely depends on your tank's gear.

Edit - I check your warrior's armory and it looks like you have good enough gear for the easier heroics.

This thread sorts Heroics by difficulty. I'm not sure how up to date it is, but I think it's reasonably accurate:

List your toons. Maybe we can suggest some stuff based on your class/professions.

A lot of the craftable gear is designed as an entry into heroics/raiding. Until the huge buff to DK defense, the only way to hit 540 was a mix of crafted and faction gear. The faction gear was at revered and some of the crafted pieces were as low as level 74; but it got you to 540 and that was all that mattered as a tank.

Another thing to consider is that unless you have been isntancing as you leveled your group, or had experience with it pre wrath, you will have a learning curve. Instances are tricky for boxers to get the feel for. The transition from questing/pvp to pve isntance is not always as smooth as you'd like. I'd make sure you can handle the level 80 instances on non heroic before I even considered a heroic. The nice thing is you still get rep in these instances and some of the drops are very nice (tanking trinket from reg HoL is almost mandatory IMHO).
