Ok so I'm about to ding 80 on my shamans, and my main aim is to arena with them.
Now the thing is, I havn't got a clue where to start gearing them. I really don't have much interest in raiding or heroics. Is the savage gear worth going for? The price seems very steep for blue quality gear.
If someone could knock together a quick explanation of how they geared up to become half viable in arena, it would be much appreciated. :)

Shield: Badges from heroics
Weapon: Crafted epic titansteel
Helmet: WG marks
Boots: WG marks
Trinket 1: WG marks
Trinket 2: Medallion (84 resil, from honor)
Armor: Crafted or savage from combined arena/honor (very cheap)
Rest: Hateful from honor (very expensive)
I would advice you to go for a full savage set.. it's so cheap and it will be worth it because you'll progress quicker.

Pretty much what magwo said!
My tip would be to find a tank and do Heroic Utgarde keep since the last boss drops a pretty nice ringe and the instance is pretty ok to mutlibox. Very easy when you get the hang on it! :) The important thing is that you get the ring since you can only obtain 1 epic ring trought pvp without having 1600+ rating.

Using mine as a help me through till something better comes along.

Thanks for the advice guys! :)
I started doing 5v5 today to get my 10 games for the week done. What can I say, ouch! An embarassment would be an understatment! even with a healer, we struggled to stay alive for more than 3 seconds each time! The mass of AOE and cc was confusing to say the least!
Anyway, I look forward to hopefully seeing some improvement in my performance with the accumulation of gear and hope it gets better. :)

I did it the same way magwow did. You should be able to get one savage item per week doing 10 games. I started with shoulder then you have enough for the pants/chest the next week. If you have the gold make a new team everyweek for more points. After about 5 weeks you should have a full set of pvp gear.

This is pretty much what I have done. Been trying some 10 arena matches a week on my dual-boxing shammies. Wooooo Whooooo! I am 4/36 thus far, but get 200-250 arena points per week, so after next week, I should have enough to get my 4th piece of the Savage Gladiator Gear (shoulders, hands, chest, legs). It will take me 5 weeks to get all 4 pieces, as the legs/chest are 350 arena each. Don't spend the extra gold to restart a new team each week, just wait an extra week to finish. I started with the crafted "StormHide" LW gear and replaced it as I could. Playing lots of WG for that gear, lots of BGs too.
here is what I look like thus far:
