Patch issue, maybe related to symlinking somehow?

So, for the past 3 patches, I've always had errors reading some data file other. First was troll haircut #6, then something from blade's edge and I can't remember the last one.

No matter what I'll have to do a repair, which takes game time away (duh) and makes me annoyed and frustrated.

I have 5 WoW folders, the only things symlinked are the data folder and interface folder, is it possible that somehow symlinking is causing issues? It doesn't seem probable, but I've had worse issues with Windows in the past.

Any thoughts from people that experienced similar issues?

Try and check for disk errors on your hard drive..



I symlink and have never had a problem. 5 seperates wow symlinks

I had the same error on my last patch when run on the symlinked copies.

all i did to rectify it was the following:

rename the original symlinked folders to something else (ie wow2-old)
patch the original location
test the original location
create new symlinked directories
delete the WTF folder from the new locations
move your original WTF (from the original folder) to the new directory


play as normal

I'm symlinking only the data dir, and what seems to work really fine for me is:

.) patch the 'main' wow (the one in the symlinks point to)
.) copy everything in the root directory of the main wow folder to the other folders (wow.exe et al)
.) delete the cache dir on the symlink dirs.

That's all I do, and it works like a charm.

There is nothing really interesting in the wtf or other dirs that gets changed on patches.

The problem is that the patches are downloaded to the root folder of wow, not the update folder. I guess blizzard dont consider them big enough or something. Once you update your main wow simply copy the files in the root folder (where wow.exe sites) to your other wow folders and you are sorted. Why? Coz you are not symb linking your root folder, your .dll files and wow.exe file are not updated in your slave folders. quiet simple if you think about it.

On seperate note, symb linknig has done sweet FA for my game performance, now its in place i'll leave it, but if i ever have to reinstall i wont bother.
