View Full Version : New annoyance

Just have to vent...
We all know the target dummies in the major cities are a great tool to use, to check dps and such - I've become a big fan of them, and test out builds and gear and rotations out on them constantly.
Last night, I was testing out some new gear and gems, and testing baseline damage (no buffs, pets, etc...), and then with buffs, with pets, etc...
What is it, that makes players have no impulse control? The entire time I'm doing this, everything from level 2 bank alts to passing 80's jump in and start whacking away. Can they not resist the urge to annoy and bother someone else? This isn't isolated, either, it happens every time I use the dummies.
It's not a big deal, but it's just yet another example of how the average WoW player just sucks. Thankfully it doesn't mess up the results, that I can tell.
I even asked one of them, "Why are you doing that?". Response? "I dunno. LOL"
AAAAGHHHH!

I never used the training dummies until I multi-boxed.
Most people have no idea what they are for (or what the can be used for), or what you are doing. ;)

You view it so negatively - but perhaps they are just trying to help you kill the damn thing.
They've seen you standing there for half an hour at a time - throwing everything you've got at that evil target dummy and still you haven't killed it.

To be honest I just think people attack them for fun or when they're bored / waiting for Ring of Valor queue to pop. Could try asking them not to attack it? :P I don't know for sure whether or not their damage counts toward yours on Recount but I'm fairly certain it doesn't have any effect.

LOL, too funny. And, yet, probably so true.
I don't think everyone has really learned their purpose. Normally the dummies are just standing there in the corner all by themselves, so people ignore them. But when someone else is "fighting" it, maybe they join in to see if they gain something from it. Maybe it magically buffs you if you fight it a little bit, or unlocks an achievement! If nothing else, probably just the novelty of having attacked it at least once if they haven't before.

I don't understand. Why does it remotely matter that someone else is whacking away on the target dummy? It's what it's there for.

i'd be annoyed if it messes up my recount.... or if i lose the loot.

Depending on who attacks it CAN fubar your results - have someone lay into it and debuff the dummy with Misery, there goes your numbers if you're looking for baseline.

Ya, they probably need to add some more of the highest level ones. There is only 1 in Org that I saw. Not sure about other Horde cities.
Personally, I think people just don't realize that some people actually use them for testing. I suppose it's like killing chickens or cows or whatever. Serves no purpose but people drive-by off chickens all the time.

Try a target dummy in one of the less visited major cities.
I hardly get any onlookers when I use the one in Exodar. Don't know what the horde equivalent is though.

Silvermoon is usualy working fine.
For Alliance I would say Darnassus.

Yeah, if I really want privacy and to ensure no-one debuffs the target, I go to Darnassus. Besides being a dead zone in the first place, the dummies are pretty well hidden in the trees by the entrance.

Maybe I'm not understanding things, but if you're using Recount, having other people attack the dummy doesn't matter.
I've had 3 other people come and run their rotations on the DK boss dummy as I was doing it and nothing changed.

I've had the same thing happen to me.
if I do it in a busy city like Ironforge I end up with at least 5+ people trying to help me kill it.
I think it's kind of funny myself.
Try a less busy city like exodar, they are kind of off to the side there ( if you are alliance that is ).
I've used Silvermoon City as well. No one ever bothers me there. If you want to see your solo performance on recount, go out of the way to SMC. If I feel lazy and use the ones in Org (next to my hunter's trainer) there will inevitably be debuffs of all kinds on the dummy from every other person walking by who chimes in. This is useful! If you want to see a little more realistic view of yourself in a raid situation, grab a few friends and kill the dummy together. The more the merrier for that purpose. Buff each other up and whack the dummy together to see some raid synergy.

Hmm...perhaps engineers can make target dummies and sell them. Then you can put them up wherever you want and whack away.

Just to clarify: it's not that someone else jumping in screws up recount - even if they do, it's easy to reset and start again.
Maybe it's just me, but what amazes me is the lack of manners and civility in the game - it's what led me to MBing anyway. It astounds me how rude and demanding people are, and how they'll just do things, uninvited, and then laugh at you if it does screw you up - too many people enjoy griefing too much.
It's like the other day, I'm questing, and this dwarf DK runs up and starts whacking away at my mob. Now, my team 2-3 shots most non-elite mobs at this point, I appreciate that he might want to help, but I was in no danger, nor asking for help. So I just keep going and tag another mob. He runs in and whacks away again. Ah, one of "those" players - i know what's coming.
I head off in another direction, try and shake him off. I know he's not going to say *anything*, he wants an invite.
Tag another mob, there he is. I stop fighting, and turn away.
"Invite"
"excuse me?"
"Invite me already"
"Sorry, we're questing as a guild"
"But I need help" (Actually, he typed "hlep"
"Sorry"
"@#$@##@ you newb go @#@!@# yursslef"
/sigh
Reported him, hearthstoned.
I could never imagine acting like that, demanding someone invite me, and then hurl abuse when someone politely says no.
That's what is killing the game for me. I just can't abide with people like that. Call me a snob, but I just can't.
That's why people who just jump in on a dummy annoy me - it's uninvited, it's rude, and how hard is it to *ask* me what I'm doing? IF, and it's a small "if", they think they're helping - most of the time they're just being assholes.
I love WoW, but I've grown to despise and completely mistrust the average player.
Whattya gonna do?

Gotta love those people who follow you around and say "invite" as if the fact they are in the same area as you while you have a group entitles them to join up.
Anyway, I do sometimes think WoW would make a great party-based offline game.
Keep in mind that the average age of a WoW player is typically very young, and of these players, the average intelligence is questionable at best. I completely agree with you though on the issue of poor manners that some players exhibit while in the game.

Hence the guild name for my 5x druid team.
This tends to be the same issue I have in both WoW and in Real life.
I must have been raised by a very unusual family as I was taught to be courteous to others, until they cross me of course.
The part that I find annoying is not that others are rude, inconsiderate, or just ignorant of proper social behavior.
It's when people become enraged when you treat their vulgarity with civility, as Gadzooks said, I just can not comprehend how they are capable of thinking this kind of behavior is ok.
Luckily I find the resolution for both my Digital and Non-digital Misanthropy to be the same thing... I stick to my already established friendships and I multi-box.
Hence the guild name for my 5x druid team. That's why I named my guild "Full Group".. and instead people started asking me for guild invites :'(
