1 pally 4 shammys is always popular, or pick a main that you really like to play and throw a healer in and 3 dps, mages, or locks are nice

Well "better" is an unending argument because it's a preference thing. All sorts of groups are completing heroic content. I run a DK/Priest/3xWarlock and I have a blast with it. Shamans provide so much flexibility and utility that stacks so well that not acknowledging them in a discussion of what might be better is silly. Shaman are Awesome in PvE. But so are a lot of other combo's. choose one you like. You can't really go wrong. Although you can really want to try something else later.. lol

My pally tank 3 mage druid healer team is coming along good. If you have room I would get at least 1 mage. Portals, food, & mage buffs are great. The pally tank is pretty nice. They are very good aoe tanks. I have not played a dk past 58 so I dont know about them. The druid healer is ok but I would think a priest would be the best healer.
You could do a pally, mage, shaman, priest + random dps class. With macros it shouldnt be hard to manage your dps with 1 button. The pally macro to tank is 1 button. I manually do avengers shield and anything else like hammer of justice ect.. Your healing setup will be the most trouble with macros.

I like my priest healer. I keep healing simple, using /cast [target=focustargettarget, help] [target=focus] [] greater heal for healing single targets, and AOE for the rest, as mana costs add up to about the same to heal 2 toons than to heal all 5. I also made a /castsequence macro with mostly blanks and I put it in my DPS macro spam key, so if i forget to manually heal, my priest at least does something. The changes to the priest tree will make priest healing even better. I'm leveling teams with a max of 3 classes at a time, but my plan is to mix n match the DPS at 80, to get the best synergy. I think having a lock and a mage on each team will be very handy, portals and summons FTW! Then fill the last spot with either a boomkin or a shaman, and I think I have a very strong team. Then I can swap out tanks/healers as they get geared up, as I imagine that I can make up for inadequate tanking with overpowered healing, and vice versa (probably easy with undergeared healing...)
My advice for new teams: Get RAF, and level up whatever you think will be fun. If you want to do PvE, make sure at least 1 toon is either a DK, Pally, Warrior, or Druid, and another toon should be either a Priest, Shaman, Resto Druid, or Holy Pally. The rest is up to you. If I had endless time, I would probably do a rogue team to 60, then swap out 2 for druids, for stealth runs :) After running 5 feral druids around for a while, melee doesn't scare me any more. Not as easy as ranged, but simple enough to manage.

Shamans are the most popular DPS for many good reasons, especially with a DK tank. Although pally + 4x shaman is the most popular, due to buff stacking a DK + 4x shaman may be stronger. Although priest healers are great, you may want to consider you'll have very limited protection against fear without at least one shaman in your group. Otherwise, with a pally tank, you could consider moonkin DPS since their buffs work well with pally buffs.

IMO, Death Knight tanking is pretty fun. Also, the Death Knight is doing quite a bit of damage while tanking, which overall helps out a lot. As per my signature, I've got the Shaman and Mage for the obvious benefits and the Moonkin since I run an all-caster (minus the DK Tank) group. Also consider what you want for backup heals and things like that. Because I've got a group with two hybrids, off-heals and things like that come quite easily.

I have a L80 Pally and am currently growing a priest/shaman/druid/mage group to team with him. It is really nice to have all of the buffs and complementary skills, not to mention the portals and food and whatnot. I think its going to be a pretty strong team when they all get to 80.

I'm still only at level 29 with my team (no raf ...) - but so far its all good. Team consist of:
- tank: pally
- healer: priest
- dps: mage, shaman, druid
This gives an impressive amount of buffs and utility (rezz, portals, water/food, remove poison/magic/disease/curse etc) 8) - a good tradeoff for the extra complexity (imo).
However ... with the next patch the change "mana spring totem and healing stream totem will be combined", 4 shamans looks pretty inviting - if they still stack ...

That group makeup is the exact setup I started out on my first 5 man team. I didnt end up leveling them because RAF came out and I started doing fewer classes at a time to ease leveling (I hated all the class quests...) I guess all you are missing is a warlock for summons :) But you have portals, 4 rezzers, 1 wipe recovery 1 battlerez, and like you said amazing buffs!
Good luck! I know in my team I was able to more easily accomplish deadmines at 19 than my other teams.
EDIT: Yes, with the totem streamlining, 4 shaman and a tank is an excellent combo. Any tank IMO is great for this purpose, so whatever floats your boat. I am running mine with an unholy DK, but I will probably run them with my prot paladin later on, as i get a bit more synergy. Maybe they will upgrade the totems to give rage, mana, energy, health and runic power :) then shamans would ROCK even more.
IMO, level your current team to 60, maybe 70, then start some more, so 3 more shamans, a druid or warrior tank, and throw a warlock on the existing shammys account :) Then you can do the 4x shaman + choice of 2 tanks (and 3 once u hit 58 with a DK) and swap out a shaman for a lock on your first team. And then theres always mix n match on any 3 of your dps :)
And how are you doing it without RAF? Are you a masochist?
