Very cool read

Personally I rate the Kerafyrm kill the highest, the amount of time/work/mass zerging that went into it is beyond all else.

Its only been done once, and will never be done again.

At least not until the next expansion ;-)

He's been woken on every server.

Only killed once though.

I believe there was 0 loot, he was overall not meant to be killed so did not have a loot table.

Yeah, No loot.

I guess it is like climbing Everest or going to the moon. What do you REALLY get as a direct result? Nothing. Some rocks, photos maybe.

But this ignores all of the tangental factors. Velcro (ok not really). Tang. Memory Foam. Rockets. All of the work leading up to it.

Anybody remember Shadowbane server hacking? The Dain EQ event? UO special server events?

Fuck me, I hated that fucking Shawl quest...

The amount of times I had to do that thing early on in my EQ career because one of our "allies" had all but completed it ... :-|

Never played EQ, but curious as to the event...

Did the 4 guardian dragons have loot tables? Did they respawn, even if The Sleeper didn't?

Yes, all 4 guardians dropped Primal Weapons which were the best weapons in the game for the longest time. Even after some expansions they were still the best around.

If you killed all 4, the Sleeper would awake and wreak havoc, but this wasn't even close to the bad part. You would no longer be able to get Primal weapons after awakening. Usually a guild that was completely geared out would do this to set themselves apart from the rest of the server or a guild that wanted to screw over everyone. Due to the very high amounts of drama this caused about 95% of all guilds that woke the Sleeper were destroyed/disbanded within the first 2 months it was that devastating.

(they later created similar items in the zone about a year later that had the same stats though)

Yeah /me still has some Prismatic weapons.

The cool thing was that he hopped over zone lines.

In EQ1 there were distinct loading points on the maps, where you had to load into the next zone. Non-existent today, but very annoying back in the day.

Mobs would not give up at all. If you aggro'd, they chased you forever, unless you could get to the zone line. When you loaded into the next zone, you dropped aggro, but if the mobs were still on the other side they would aggro onto whoever was there. This is what caused massive "trains" of mobs to pile up at zone entrances.

So all of the mobs were contained in their specific zone. But only the Sleeper could hop across these zone lines, and he had a near zone-wide aggro, where he wouldn't rest until everything in the zone was dead.

Imagine Ony, or some equivalent, being released in the Barrens with a super huge aggro radius. Good times. :)

Meh. Leeroy Jenkins wasn't an event. It was a staged video. Very funny, very popular, but it doesn't deserve to be on that list imo.

Back in the BWL days there was a bug with Burning Adrenaline ( http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=23620 ), the debuff Vael would put on 1 player at a time. Pets could get BA and then be dismissed. We had a warlock pet get BA once, and the person reacted in time to dismiss the pet before he blew up. As soon as the raid was over the entire guild went into the IF AH (only AH was in IF) and the pet was resummoned.

Imagine being in the AH checking auctions and suddenly everyone is hit for ~5k fire damage, a lot of damage in those days. I'll see if I can find the video a guildy made of it, got some good forum drama out of it too. Blizz fixed it shortly after though.

So, you could take down up to 3 guardians, but never all 4 or the event would start?

I'd be pissed too, but I do like the idea of having something unique. It seems like in current games ( I suppose even RL ), everyone feels entitled to the same, or better, then the next guy.

I suppose, in WoW terms, this could be interperpeted and having only 1-2 Thunderfury's per server. The AQ opening event mount is the only really unique thing in WoW as most servers only have 1-4 of them. It seems in 'endgame' sooner or later, everybody becomes clones of one another.

Yeah, you could kill three of the Wardens but not the fourth, otherwise all hell would be unleashed :-S

That Sleeper fight must have been epic, would have loved to see it. Interesting setup too, I would never forsee any other MMO to do soemthing that similar.

Thanks for sharing this.

So were AoW/ Zek fights. It was just "throw bodies at him" and rez rush until he dies.

45 minutes later.

What was REALLY amazing were the Nagafen / Vox fights. Granted, they were not epic in the sense that every server had many fights but the first ones were so epic and amazing - the risk / reward was amazingly intense.

Imagine dying and popping up naked. Outside the dungeon. And you lost a level. You had to fight your way back in. Naked. To get your corpse back. Which was at the feet of a very pissed off dragon and surrounded by 40 other corpses.

Everquest makes other MMO's seem so... candy-coated. That game's developers punished us over and over and over... and we loved them for it. Or at least, we claimed that we hated them but kept coming back. >.<

As far as High-end PvE goes, no other MMORPG I've played has come close to EverQuest. Its just all the other buggy shit/broken quests/unbalanced items/unbalanced classes etc...

Not sure if that's a geddon bomb or vael bomb. I don't remember getting the swirly particle effect from BA, but it's a bomb going off in the Ironforge AH nonetheless :).

That is the Geddon bomb if I'm not mistaken, very visible graphic when the debuff is on you. I looked and the ftp where the video was hosted has been cleaned out. Very similar result though, however only a couple people survived the blast, the warlock and 2 warriors in full fire resist gear.

Before the sleeper is awake ST drops Primals , Sceptre of Destructions, and the Gnome mask. After some one wakes him it begins dropping prismatics and the dwarf mask. Some of the later servers kept their sleeper and people farmed ST for mass plat, but EQ's lame story line and the release of Dragon's of Norrath any sleeping Sleepers were awoken :P

The Sleeper kill was 3 guilds + random people, using all pre-luclin gear, and 350 people took almost 4 hours of straight fighting and battle rezing to finally down him.
