View Full Version : Frostfire Mage - DPS macro
Alright i'm running prot pally + 3 mages (no they're not 75 yet but I always think ahead) how would I go about making a good dps macro for Frostfire spec ( 0/53/18 )? I was thinking something along the lines of
/castrandom Scorch, Living Bomb, Frostfire bolt, Frostfire bolt, Frostfire bolt, Frostfire bolt
Multiple frostfire bolts so they the macro will choose that spell more often in the hopes that scorch and living bomb will be near the end of the duration before needing another cast. Has anyone had any experience with this spec and would know how to make the macro better?

RNG will probably mess that up pretty good. Even with that you'll probably end up occasionally getting 4-5 scorches in a row, etc. If you want a specific rotation you're probably better off doing a castsequence.
But, what I'd do, is a castsequence and a castrandom, and then spend 5 minutes in front of a practice dummy doing 2-3 minutes with each one and see which one does more DPS :)

I'm curious on your 5 man setup...
You didn't change one of the shamans to restro and was wondering how you accomplished this without having a dedicated healer...
Would you be able to have this setup under 80? like at 60-70 or 70-80 etc?
And lastly is the DK just that much better than a Pally tank?

I would recommend frost spec. Its very user friendly for a boxer. Also, I have read that frostfire spec is really not good unless you have the gear for it. Unless your mages have a lot of crit and spell you are better off with another spec. Personally I didnt want to use any spec where I had to watch for hotstreaks or certain procs to happen in order for my dps to be maxed. With my frost spec all you do is spam frostbolt. It makes boxing the mages much easier than any other mage spec.

All the heroics in my signature I've downed without a resto shaman. I have never specced one of my shamans resto before and don't intend to at any point in the future :) All instances I've done so far are fine without a resto shaman. This is basically the setup I've used from 1 all the way to 80 and beyond.
I prefer the DK to the pally a lot because they're way cooler, more fun to multibox, WAY more fun to solo box, and the damage buff is preferable to me vs the paladins buffs which are boring and I don't really need :)
Frostfire has far too many procs (Hot Streak anyone?) to be usable in a macro. If you want to do DPS, spec 57/3/11 and try one of these:
/castsequence Arcane Blast, Arcane Blast, Arcane Blast, Arcane Barrage
OR
/castsequence Arcane Blast, Arcane Barrage
OR
Spam Arcane Blast.
Arcane relies on literally one proc, Missile Barrage, but you don't NEED to use it, and can just put the 5 points elsewhere.
Or spec Frost, spam Frostbolt, easy.

I have tried lots of combinations with my frostfire mage and only 1 really gave good numbers
Currently I use /castsequence reset=target Living Bomb -> Frostfire Bolt x 5
I need to either change his spec at this point to either frost or arcane as his dps is about 1200 and my shamans are about 1600 at the end of a completed heroic.

I use a pally tank and I can see how this is true. I do have a 60 DK. Maybe ill level him to 80 :)

cast sequence macro's reduce dps dramatically. don't use them

cast sequence macro's reduce dps dramatically. don't use them well honestly: they can reduce dps dramatic, depending on spell length and latency..
...but honestly: me having to manage 20 keys instead of three, also reduces the dps ;) ..so I would say the above more as an hint, than as a general rule, becasue it depends on the classes/spells and setup.
