View Full Version : The Worst Lie I've ever been Told

My mixed group just hit 70 and as such, I took them to Stormwind to train new abilities. Someone followed me from the Mage Tower to the Druid Trainer to the Priest trainer and finally out to the Shaman trainer. I didn't see him, but it was obvious I'd been followed enough for him to figure out exactly how many characters were in my group.
He let me know he had reported me and that I was going to be banned shortly. I gave our generic reply of, "Knock yourself out. Multiboxing is allowed." I figured I'd get the usual, "F-off, you multiboxing motherf-er!" Instead, this guy claimed to have been banned in the past for having multiboxed five characters and that the only reason he got in trouble was that, "Four is the maximum you can multibox." Alright. I tried to calm him down and figure out what happened. I even gave him a little advice about where he could go to try and get his situation fixed.
He didn't want to bother since he'd already tried it and that no amount of Blue quotes would say multiboxing is fine. Alright again. He's even gone so far as to sell all his multiboxing equipment (at least, the other four computers he was using) and start over with his current account. He didn't seem too smart, so I shifted my strategy just a little. I asked about his account, and he offered that his main account had several 70's and an 80 on it when it was banned. I ask how long ago it happened. His answer was five months.
FIVE MONTHS?!?!?!?!?!? This conversation occurred just yesterday; how could he have leveled to 80 months before the level cap was raised?
I figure the whole thing was a lie.

It's possible he was multiboxing (though doubtful) but with account w/ different owners. If he was banned then he may not have been smart enough to realize that the reason was account based, not multiboxing based.

If we got a nickle for every time someone lied to us or was a complete moron, we'd never have to work again.

The problem for people comes when they know -- they just KNOW -- that multiboxing is illegal ...but when it comes to it, they can't think why this is. Why not just take a stab at it, even if they need to make up a little evidence, just to satisfy the conversation until they can remember the actual reason? They're confident of eventual vindication as a righteous person, being that they're 100% sure they're correct even if they can't quite put a finger on why that is, just at the moment.
I don't think this is usually a conscious train of thought, but I imagine it goes something like that. We've probably all been there once or twice, with something we'd just love to believe is true.

i think its more because when they see a multiboxer, they go, "NOT FAIR!!! my mom wont buy me four more accounts!"
so if they cant do it, then you shouldnt either.
i know, pretty selfish but hey... tis human.

Yesterday I got a whisper saying "Reported". I replied with "Thanks!". The person in question told me I would be banned shortly and I notified him of the fact that multiboxing is legal. In fact, I had spoken to a GM 2 days ago for an unrelated issue and the GM even cheered me on that I was leveling 5 characters at once. The person told me that Blizzard's policy changed in the last 2 days and that it was now illegal. Obviously, I told him to have fun with his little story and hoped he'd enjoy the conversation with the GM where he would be told that MB'ing was legal :)
Suffice to say, I'm NOT banned and still happily MB'ing towards 80 :)

When I had my first two accounts banned, I said that I had used my credit card to pay for a "friends" account and he got banned which banned me through the credit card association. Was a pretty solid story, stuck to it for a while. Realisitically, I was botting like crazy and it finally caught up with me. Will not be doing that again and haven't, even though I still have a valid copy of the botting program. Lost ~5 lvl 60 toons over 2 accounts (plus some other 30's and 40's) about a month before BC came out.

The thing that strikes me about the guy in the story (Basilikos's story in the original post) is that he hates multiboxers so much that he reports someone ... but he himself multiboxed? It seems odd to find those two things together in one person. I guess maybe he got so angry at being banned that he takes it out on other people, but that seems pretty farfetched.
Basilikos did you say anything else to him at the start that made him decide suddenly that you're a nice guy? Maybe after he threatened you, he suddenly decided that he wanted to have a friendly conversation instead and that's why he invented all the bullshit about having boxed.

IRL (and consequently, in WoW, since I don't act like someone I'm not when online), I'm usually amiable unless someone is doing something I can't stand or they're aggressive about something and won't drop it with me. I'm guessing that (as I said) this whole thing was a lie and he was just trying to scare me. From his grasp of the English language (and while we're on the subject, I'm horrible with spoken language and I admit that upfront), I would suppose that he's either a public school student (I'm a recovering public school student myself) or a mental deficient. He probably didn't have the mental prowess to deduce that I'd been reported many times before and if I were doing anything wrong, the group I was playing wouldn't have made it to level 70.
Oh well. On to Northrend (after I clean up the kill quests and such left in Outland).

In other words, he's either heard of it before or seen it before, and he hates it for whatever reason. So he doesn't really report anyone, because he knows that BLIZZARD ALLOWS CHEATING BY THOSE DIRTY MULTIBOXERS. He just tries to bullshit them because... god, who knows why? He probably figured it would make him feel better, but by the end of the conversation had chewed through his own shoulder.
I'll never understand it. /shrug

I met one of those anti-boxer crusaders while waiting for WotLK launch. He was in his early 20's, long frizzy hair, got dropped off by his mom and he had the nerve to call me, a clean cut 30 year old office dweller married and homeowner; a "basement dwelling fgt" to my face, in front of 20 others. Needless to say, I lol'd so hard because my RL friends informed him how wrong he was.
Sometimes people feel so righteous (thanks for the great use of the term) that they can look reality in the face and completely ignore it.

Myself lately, when I run across people like this, I get overly aggressive towards them and abit insulting as well. I always keep my language clean however towards them because I know that IS reportable.
I don't like their attitude and their whiney bullshit. I let them know they are the type of person I'm trying to avoid by multiboxing. I really don't have the patience for assholes anymore.

Nobody can make up things to be outraged about, and fill themselves with righteous fury, like a 20-something male. Except maybe a 20-something female. :)
When i look back at my early 20's, and the attitudes I clung to and defended...lol...you just have to laugh.

You know, the thing that gets me is that if these people lie to us, imagine what they are telling the GMs. I'm sure they get all sorts of "confessions" out of us from these guys.
"Yeah, he said he botted and was part of an international human trafficking ring! He told me he'd slit my throat if I reported him, and made disparaging remarks about my mother and my sexual orientation! He's also Chinese!"

Ug, I hate House. Dude gets free reign to be an ass while the show goes through the same plot episode after episode. Person comes in sick. Team misdiagnoses person. Person nearly dies. Team discovers other condition that may or may not be affected by previous condition. They administer mouse-bite serum. Person gets better. Or dies to provide dramatic flare.

True, but I don't watch it for the plot; I watch it to see House continue to emotionally harm people.

Does this refer to the International Chinese Crime Ring? If so, thanks for the heads up - I was thinking about getting into that.
