View Full Version : My guild? You're looking at it!

I'm just sharing my experiences with the community, and wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences.

So here I was, with my characters on a new server (in a manner of speaking) and merrily soloing and multiboxing. One problem-- constant guild invites anytime I stopped at a city, and sometimes even when I didn't. Funniest group invite moment? The time that someone /whispered my warlock to ask if she wanted to run Blood Furnace with a group. What was she doing at the time? You guessed it... running Blood Furnace with a group. Advice to people looking to form groups... check the location of anyone you are about to /whisper for an invite. Thanks. But, I digress...

The /whisper spam was becoming annoying. In part because it was often the same handful of players who would ask, day in and day out, for me to join their guild. I don't think it was a case of any of them being determined to recruit me, as much as it was that they simply spammed guild invites to anyone they saw without a guild tag. The character names would become a blur to them, so they'd wind up spamming people repeatedly. This was in addition to the guy who sent me a tell offering me his guild, because he was "tired of being a guild master." That one sounded so suspicious that even if I'd been interested, I'd have turned him down. Then there was the guy who wanted my level 80 hunter to join his guild. They had 20 people already, including several 70s, a 60 or two, and some 40s and 30s! Or the guy who followed my shaman halfway around the game world because he apparently wanted to draw out the request in a "20 questions" format, instead of just asking if I wanted to join his guild. For the record, the answer to the 20th question was "no."

(An aside: Does anyone really want to join a guild that recruits in this manner? It strikes me that most people who are unguilded fall into two categories-- they do not want to be in a guild, or they are constantly being kicked out for being a lousy guild member. Yeah, that's what I want to join, a guild made up of malcontents, loners, and troublemakers, run by someone with no standards. Am I being harsh? I tend to think that I am not. 'Spam recruiting' is the number one sign of a bad guild, IMO.)

Hrm, this is getting a bit long. Anyway, I decided to create a guild for the sole purpose of avoiding the constant guild invite spam. I figured it would also be useful for getting items to my auction alt character. Aside from that, I didn't really have any expectations or plans. I considered asking someone here to create five alt characters and help me form the guild, so as to avoid spamming others with guild invites and "help me make a guild" messages (yeah, I had a few of those as well, sigh). And then I figured, why not go whole hog? So I purchased five vanilla accounts and rolled up some alts annnd... tada! <Hugs> was born.

(Another aside: I had considered going for some cutesy theme name, and my first choice was <Pieces of Me>, which I thought was downright clever. But I imagined having to explain to people that no, I'm neither emo nor a big Ashley Simpson fan. I went through a few other choices, which I can't recall now. I also was considering a Lovecraft-inspired name, but figured that I'd be explaining THAT one as well. I finally went with the name of a friend's Everquest guild, which I thought would be a nice tribute of sorts. It is also a simple guild name that won't require any explanation. Still, a guild of female characters called <Dunsany's Doyennes> wouldn't have been too pretentious, would it? >.< )

To keep this from becoming too long, the end result is a guild bank with four tabs (which are already 85% full) and around 6,700 gold. It's been a pure godsend for organizing all of the stuff that was accumulating in the banks of the multiboxed characters, my other characters, and any bank and auction alts. There were one or two times when I was emptying a character's bank into the guild bank and realized that I had stacks upon stacks of an item I'd just bought at the AH in order to finish up a tradeskill level. Arrgh...

Since I've been leveling every tradeskill with my numerous characters, it's great to have one area to drop the materials that my gatherers collect so that the other characters can grab what they need. And my auction alt can now flip through the tabs and see if any of the items that would otherwise be collecting dust are a hot auction item lately. (The answer to that is YES, to the tune of about 1500 gold over the last four days!) This is very good, since there are four characters who will need at least a normal flying mount in just four levels, as well as the northrend flying skill seven levels after that. And if I want to get their fast flying mounts as well, I'm looking at around 27,600 gold. I am now just under 20,000 gold shy of that figure.

(Yet another aside: what's most surprising about that is the fact that when I figured out that I was still 21,000 gold short, my response was to shrug my shoulders and think "that's not so bad." WotLK has really rendered gold concerns moot. Around 3,500 of that 6,700 in the bank is the result of the hunter's post-80 questing and dailies, even though he has spent around 9,500 gold since level 70! And that's not counting the 2,500 gold I spent on my shaman when I got back to playing and installed the expac, or the 1,850 spent on guild bank tabs, or any other expenditures I've run up since I got back to playing. So after spending around 14,000-16,000 gold, I've got more than 6,700 gold and counting. Yeah, another 20,000 gold won't be a problem, especially when the group hits Northrend.)

Anyway, that's my excessively long post on forming a guild. Any thoughts, comments, or experience of your own?

Guild Banks are WAY useful for boxers. Love having one central place I can dump all my stuff.

Creating a guild for having a central drop-off/retrieval/storage areas for all your toons = win as a multiboxer. I still need to purchase my last two tabs, but epic mounts for my second team which just turned 80 are first.

In terms of annoying guild invites, a more specific solution is Jafula's Jamba boxer addon. Among its innumerable awesome features, it supports auto-group, guild, and duel declines.

My high levels are in a raid guild. I have a guild of my own with my AH toons. The guild has a bank w/ four tabs I use for centralized storage and to make it easy to trade mats around and the like. I also have some RL friends who don't want to be in a guild, but hate the guild invite spam, so I offer to put them in my bank guild as well. I get a lot of compliments on my guild name too: http://www.wowarmory.com/guild-info.xml?r=Antonidas&n=No+Drama&p=1

Yeah, I finally installed and configured Jamba yesterday and it rocks. Aside from the great stuff for making multiboxing a bit more hassle-free, it also auto-declines those annoying duel-requests from bored players. Sadly, the guild recruiting I am referring to is done via /whisper and not a direct invite. While I would normally appreciate that the person in question actually tried to contact me instead of just using /ginvite out of the blue, they would continue to contact me at various times. Maybe there is some bonus acheivement for filling your guild to a certain size that I'm not aware of. Oh well, if there is, I could probably reach it just by inviting my own alts. :)

I'm a big fan of personal guild banks meself! It's half the reason for a multiboxer to bother setting up a guild. The other half, though the OP may disagree, is surely the joy of a cutesy guild name. My love of cutesy guild names has cut into the functionality of the guild bank, because now for five teams, I have three guilds, specifically because I thought of two more cutesy names I couldn't let go ('Dis Gonna Hurt' for my troll shaman team, and 'Grimmertotem' for the tauren druids). Many guilds are name-driven -- e.g. 'Is Cooler Than You', 'Rides A Chicken' -- so this is not unique.

fwiw, if I ever start a new team on a new server, I think I'll remain unguilded for awhile except to whore signatures out to aspiring guildmasters for 10g a pop. That can buy a lot of early skills for a poor RAF multiboxer.

I've been trying to get my guild up and running for a few days now, problem is, multiboxers are pretty much hated here. So getting signatures is proving difficult
but I can't wait to get my own guild bank.

request help from someone here, wont take much for a person to log on 5 newbie chars on your server, you run to the starting area to meet them (like elwynn forest or w/e) and walla you've got 9 sigs.

Great point if you need help making a guild just make a thread saying need making guild help. Tell us your relm and faction and who to look for. Help one another out so we dont have to pay people or spam.

The other half, though the OP may disagree, is surely the joy of a cutesy guild name.Oh, you misunderstand, I think the cutesy guild names are awesome. I was really thinking of going with something clever for mine (and "Pieces of Me" was my first choice, and I really did think it was clever :P ) but I try to fly under the radar as much as I can, so I decided to go with a name that wouldn't attract much attention. Or at least, one that didn't cause people to /whisper me with questions. <Pieces of Me> would've definitely gotten a laugh out of my friends and former guildmates.

Before I left my raiding guild to form my MB guild, I would constantly forget to hit pause when i chatted in guild. So I would say everything times five. But when I would remember and just say it on my main, and it was referring to something i was doing with my team, a guildie would say "/gu X 5". for example I would say "/gu I just finished my dailies in 15 mins"! and a guildie would reply " /gu X 5 " So that why I named my guild X FIVE 8) Everything I do IS times five.. perfect name 8)

I think there is an addon that /whos and finds people that are unguilded. I literally had all my slaves invited at the same time to the same guild. I was amused and joined Pink Pwnies long enough to be annoyed and leave. Every time I logged on I would get "OMG", "What a loser", etc.

Heh, I think that "Pieces of Me" is a pretty funny concept. My problem is I take it too far. I had a horde guild a year ago called "Entertainment Tonight" where everyone had to be a celebrity (my pally was Johntesh and my moonkin was Simoncowell). The guild actually got fairly big (15+ unique users) with >80% having celebrity names.

Now I'm considering starting a guild called "Mentos Suck" or something along the breathmint genre.

I'm on Blood Furnace as well and made <Hydra Box Crew> for the same purpose, having my own guild bank for 10+ chars to share rules.

My guild was the first thing i did! My rogue had full bags and bank slots, and I knew I'd need more.

The most humerous aspect of making it was, all the people in SW that signed my petition (for a mere 2g each), was, they all wanted to stay! LOL!

I now have 4 bank tabs full, and my next purchase I'm saving for is the 5th. I save *everything*. Oh, yeah - all my characters have full banks, too.

Did I mention I save everything? :)

Not junk, but I have stacks and stacks and stacks of enchanting mats, leather, cloth, gems, pots, ore, herbs - you name it! I can powerlevel several professions right now, and still have tons left over. I have more meat and cooking mats, but only two toons that cook! :) I have about 300 chilled meats, not kidding - and my one 80 cook just started the Dalaran dailies. My rogue has stacks of Netherwing crystals and ore and leather. I have primals and nethers and void crystals...if my account got hacked, and someone cleaned my out, I could never remember all of it. That's why I need to start taking screenshots ocassionally of all of the tabs, just in case.

Yeah, I could sell it all - but gold is so easy, why? I don't want to have to farm all that again!

Now, I'm running BC instances for the fun and achievements, and I'm running out of room saving all THAT stuff!

You know what kills me the most? Not one of my current 3 80's have every had a single epic drop. Not one. My rogue had a couple.

But, I got a Ced's Carver out of the Steamvault last night, I tucked that away for a future alt.

I was debating another guild for storage, but the tabs are too costly, so I'm making Frostweave bags as fast as I can, and getting them on all of my alts, and buying bank slots.

I'm down to 1000g from buying my mage and lock Ebonweave gloves and chests, and gemmed them out, but hey, that's what the gold is for! :)

All 3 are hitting 1500 on the DPS meter, as of last night. I'm happy. :) That's with quest blues, and AH epics. Not bad.

So what does PaG stand for?Paladins are Gay.

That was actually the guild name for a time, way back in '05. It lasted several months before it was reported and we were disbanded, and we got a lot of "OMG AWESOME GUILD NAME" comments from fellow horde (this was prior to horde getting paladins). So when we re-formed the guild, we named it <PaG>.

Now that I think about it, I should update my avatar...

Yup, solo guilds are the best guilds for alts.

My first 5-box team guild was "Beauty and Da Beasts" with a little female blood elf paladin leading around 4 big-n'-ugly male tauren shaman.

But after blasting my way up to level 60 with them (and doing lots of "laser light shows" in Orgrimmar) they became known enough that instead of being spammed with /ginvite whispers I was getting spammed with /w OMGZZERS uR so koolz kan I joinz UR gu1ld plzzzzz...

I haven't decided what is worse.

But, yes, the guild tabs make up for it I suppose.

OP:
You purchased five extra accounts for the sole purpose of forming a guild...? (Unless I misinterpreted your statement or something.) Wouldn't it have been easier to just ask the people on these forums for help? =/

Also, a suggestion I have for those of you experiencing difficulty getting people to sign your charter due to the prejudice towards multi-boxers is to make a level one character that's unrelated to your multi-box team and purchase the charter/request signatures with this character specifically. Do NOT sign the charter with your m-box team until you've acquired the requisite number of signatures you'll need (assuming that the new character is on one of your team's accounts, then you'll need five more signatures if you're a five boxer). Then /gkick everyone else after you form the guild.

When I rolled on one of the new servers the other day, I used the above method to garner the extra signatures I needed for my charter. I just stood in the newbie spawn area and politely asked people if they would sign my charter PRIOR to actually opening the charter window. Out of the seven people I asked, I received the five signatures I needed. Not a bad ratio in my opinion. The other two just didn't answer my /tells... (NOTE that if you're not playing on a new(er) server, you'll probably have a MUCH more difficult time finding people to sign your charter. At least, I found this to be the case on my old server, although it was a server with a lower population: Terokkar.)

OP:
You purchased five extra accounts for the sole purpose of forming a guild...? (Unless I misinterpreted your statement or something.) Wouldn't it have been easier to just ask the people on these forums for help? =/My plan had been to ask people here to help with the last five accounts, but there were other considerations that I had. For one, I saw people talking about Kara runs, and am considering that at some point in the future (and while I could five-box it, I figured it would be fun to take a full raid and gear out some low-70s at some point). The other is that some of my accounts have multiple level 60+ characters, and I wanted to spread them out to give me more options at 70. My priest and shaman are on one account, and I am moving one of them so I can use them both in a group if I want, instead of just one or the other.

If it was only for the purpose of forming a guild, I would've just asked someone here to help. I do think that it was the one thing that pushed me to do it when I did, as I wasn't planning to do it until later this year (when I perform some hardware upgrades and maybe a new desk/workstation).
