Hi all

What glyphs are you all going to put on your elemental shamans next patch?
I'm at quite a loss as to what to get..

Glyph of Flame Shock is a must I think, but the rest:
Glyph of LBolt
Glyph of Lava
Glyph of Flametongue Weapon
Glyph of Earthshock(to be named Glyph of Shocking)

Glyph of shocking seems a very PvP-focussed glyph but could still be nice if you're using lots of shocks in a DPS rotation, Lbolt one looks very important for PvE and could be okay for PvP since that spell is kind of still a bread and butter spell.

Since my team's still only 73 I haven't had the pleasure of using lava burst yet, but I'm a little doubtful on how good an extra 10% of spellpower would be for lava burst and would assume an extra 2% spell crit from the Flametongue glyph would be better. Can anyone enlighten me on this?
ATM I'm inclined to plan for: Flame Shock, LBolt, Earthshock(Shocking) but very curious as to what other more experienced shamans have to say ~

Cheers

I haven't bothered with the reduced mana cost of lightning bolt, as my mana seems to be fairly alright atm. Clearcasting has helped a lot with mana issues as well. When you experience lava burst, you will love it.

My major glyphs are:
Flame shock - increased duration and not consumed by lava burst (lava burst is awesome for clearcasting procs and high dmg)
Flametongue weapon - 2% chance to crit seems pretty good to me, might consider changing to chain lightning glyph when spell crit gets high enough though
Lava burst - extra 10% spell power for your hardest hitting attack. It will be like popping a trinket at 2k spell power.

MInor glyphs are:
Water Walking - reagent free
Underwater breathing - reagent free (you'd be surprised how use they become)
Water shield - extra charge on them (often get hit and an extra charge means less time wasted refreshing it)

LB glyph will be 4% more damage for your LBs... so it's definitely a consideration now. I run Healing Stream, Flame Shock and Flametongue weapon. I am really unsure what I will do with my glyphs, if to even touch them at all. I wanted to use the Lavaburst glyph for 10% more spellpower, but with it's cooldown I really wonder how much that affects your dps. Single target, 4 LvB will kill just about anyone in pvp, so I really dont need the overkill 10% more. I use healing stream as it makes healing with 4 elemental shamans and it reduces the healing they have to do in a boss fight.

pvp - flameshock, earthshock, dunno for 3d maybe chain lightning or lightning bolt? anything for magma totem?
pve - flameshock, 2% crit flametongue, lightning bolt imo

For PVE, if you go through recount or other damage meter mods you will see that lightning bolt still accounts for significant portions of your damage, between 40-60% on most fights. So getting more spell damage, haste, crit, etc to lightning bolt will always be upping your DPS better than upping lava burst dmg imo. When you first start out at 80 putting water totem for extra mana may be a bit helpful since I would go oom a lot when first doing heroics, but at higher levels of gear its almost always going to be better just to maximize your DPS as you will rarely go oom.

I just switched from 2x heal totem to flametongue and my DPS jumped up a good 200 or so in heroics today from 1600 to 1800 or so average, currently running flame shock, flametongue, and LB and won't be changing with patch hopefully. I am going to switch from the goblin lava burst totem to the lightning bolt badge totem tomorrow as well I think based on my recount numbers today.

PvP
Flame Shock
Lava Burst
Shocking

PvE
Possibly the same

Tests were done on Flametongue vs Lightning Bolt in a PvE setting and Lightning Bolt only netted a .1 dps % increase, very small, so either is the same basically.

Awesome, thanks for the input guys.

I'm a bit surprised to hear that the dps was hardly any different between Lbolt and Lava glyphs, I guess I'll go Lava for my 3rd for the extra burst, with Shocking and Flameshock for the rest.

to maximize pve damage

Glyph of LB (scaling)
Glyph of Lava
Glyph of Flame Shock

those 3 will be what all good raiding shamans will be using, no other choices. What those glyphs give You, is only available through them, unlike glyph of ft, which can easily be matched with better gear(plus crit is not really our main stat)

You sure chopping off an extra .5 seconds with the Shocking Glyph isn't better DPS for a rotation? :)

The GCD floor is 1 second, correct? Most shamans at decent 80 gear probably are sitting at 300 haste, which is reduction of nearly 10% to 1.35? So you would be saving 0.35 seconds. In 60 seconds on PVE boss fights you would cast at most 4 flame shocks (every 18 secs) so you are saving 1.4 seconds to cast DPS spells, doesn't seem very effective.

For PVP of course you may cast a lot more FS's and saving 0.35 seconds on opening burst is huge, especially with 4 shamans. But for PVE its never been a big deal, in fact many times I have to wait around for the tank to build up enough threat.

Niley - in recount how much of your damage is lava burst vs lightning bolt on boss fights? I haven't run naxx on a shaman this week but in heroics lightning bolt is > 50% of my dmg still on boss fights, so I prefer the crit glyph (to keep aura always procing and to help LB) to LvB glyph.

I was under the assumption that GCD was 1.5 with the exception of rogues/cat druids.

I was under the assumption that GCD was 1.5 with the exception of rogues/cat druids. It can be lowered to 1.0 using haste gear and spells (heroism, WoAt etc.) :-)
