Defense rating?

So my defense is at 534 but when i scroll over it it says my "defense rating" is at 660, so which one is the one i'm supposed to get to 540 and why isn't it adding all my gear to my total defense rating?
Can anyone give me a crash corse as of how the defense works?

They changed the stats from gear a long time ago. There are 2 things that sound the same, but one is actually on the gear and one is in your stats page. You used to be able to get gear with %crit, defense, haste and such on it. Now they wanted the stats to scale with levels, so it is ratings. Crit rating, defense rating, haste rating, etc. Your gear has rating on it and it changes based on your level to convert into a regular stat. So your rating could be 660 and your regular stat could be less. You want your stat at stuff, not the rating. The rating is just how you get your stat high enough.
