View Full Version : Is your Wintersgrasp AKA Winterslag?

For weeks wintersgrasp has been unplayable on Magtheridon. I dont know how it does on other servers. What happens is our server chugs along at a snails pace making it unplayable. You cannot attack anyone because you are standing there watching people warp all over the screen. The attacking side wins every match because a line of vehicles mass near the walls and spam the attack key. Eventually they will bust the walls and win. You cant form any type of defense because trying to fight something in the lag fest is impossible. I still go there for the marks but trying to complete the pvp daily quest may take you a few battles. Last night I entered wintersgrasp. I joined a raid. Then spent almost 10mins trying to travel from the horde flight guy to the keep because the server was lagged up. Just as I finally reach the keep the battle ends.

It's getting worse and I wonder if the other servers suffer this problem.

Yeah, it lags... there should be a cap for # players in it.

Wintergrasp is quite laggy once the main area is infiltrated. Once it hits that stage I usually run around on the outskirts to avoid the lag and just pick up stragglers. It's the drawback to having 200+ people all fighting at the same time in a clumped location. DAoC had the same problem if anyone played that game.

Dentarg FTW! I moved off Lagtheridon and don't regret it one bit. I play WG with about zero lag and it still has a healthy amount on both sides. We usually have 1.5 raids going at primetime and very little lag. I actually like playing WG as opposed to most BGs.

Whats really funny is no matter what zone in Northrend you are in, you know the second the keep is attacked in Wintergrasp because suddenly everything lags a lot, everywhere. Its even worse when you are in Icecrown or Storm Peaks, since those zones have so much phasing :(

Wintergrasp has NO LAG for me on my server, but my server is small and a peice of crap. Finally got the hang of the place down so I now have 55 wintergrasp marks. Blizzard owes me 9 though cause it keeps glitching and not ginving them to either my main or my slaves.

What Fursphere said. Try with a single character and turn all the video settings down, it does help for me. Still rubber-band a bit but it's much more playable.

Also a protip for Wintergrasp. If you're attacking, get there before the battle starts! I like to parachute in from Icecrown and land in the base. You will almost always get a full 20 stack of Tenacity right away, which will last at least the first 30 seconds (that's how often the server recalculates it). You should have no problem getting enough HKs to rank up immediately, and after you die go get in a siege engine.
Now I really want to level my engineer up and see if Tenacity works on the siege damage from Global Thermal Sapper Charge... :)

yeah the way WG ends is weird, sometimes it gives me the mark or doesnt and sometimes it ends and kicks everyone from the fortress or we stand there and get slaughtered by npcs. The ending could use some debugging or at least do something more grand than... YOU LOST HAHA!

The other half is your local PC trying to load 200+ unique characters all at once with their unique armor models and unique enchants and gems and... and... and............ all in a split second.
This is an issue of the client being a little too dumb technically. Very little of the information being sent across the wire is relevant. Eve online had the same issue, where sending 100% of the info of all players/ships was feasible in small-scale encounters, it did not make sense in large-scale battles.

What information is relevant? How much damage am I taking/healed, how much damage did I do, where are other players and how much life does everyone have(or for more fine-grained -- health of those targeted only). Armor, enchants, gems are not relevant and while they allow you to answer the second question client-side quickly in small-scale battles, it scales very poorly.

There are major optimizations that can happen, but often require design work. We'll see if they've done any of it if the performance starts scaling up :)

Has anyone tried reducing the view distance? Not sure if that would help or not. I have found Winterlag on L(M)agtheridon to be horrible. Mostly unplayable.

That doesnt matter. I have my wow at min settings. No matter if I am playing 5 accounts or 1 I get the same winterslag thats unplayable. What I try to do now is hope I get my 20 kills right at the start before the lag fest happens. Sometimes I may just pop my guy(s) in a vehicle and sit back to watch the choppy sinclair lag fest.

The servers definitely need upgrading. This is obvious by the fact that every zone that has phasing (Ie: almost all of northrend) has MASSIVE lag spurts randomly. Everything is peachy keen most of the time and then for 5 minutes straight everyone has 10-20 second loot/spell/follow lag.

Will Dalara & Wintergrasp always lag?

I just placed an order on

mother board Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5, X58, DDR3,
Socket-1366, ATX, 3xPCI-Ex(2.0)x16
Intel Core™ i7 920 Quad Processor 8MB
Corsair TWIN3X 1600MHz DDR3, 6GB
Gigabyte Radeon HD 4850 1GB possible adding another card if needed.
2,00 Seagate Barracuda 320GB, 7200RPM, 16MB, SATA 3Gb/s

Atleast this should fix any lag in Arena,AV & Instances i hope , i run 4 chars.

anyone runnig on similar computer hardware ?

I have 12 GB ram, same proc, 2 x 4870x2's and dual raptors. Dalaran is just fine.

anyone runnig on similar computer hardware ?I only have a dual core processor, 3GB of memory, and 512MB GeForce 9800GT and I only ever lag in Dalaran (haven't been to wintergrasp yet). Everywhere else my game runs fine. FWIW I just bought an extra 4GB of memory since it was only $25 with free shipping and will be installing Vista x64 (which I also got super cheap) just to take advantage of the extra memory. I doubt this will make anything run much faster though, if anything it might slow down some because of the extra overhead Vista causes.

Wintergrasp depends on your server. Low pop or off peak hours it's the same as any other busy zone. High pop it's going to have server lag no matter what your PC is made from. My server is queued and on prime time I have seen 4+ raid groups in WG and since the opposing faction didn't have Tenacity they had at least nearly as much as we did. It gets pretty laggy and has been unplayable a couple of times on the final push into the keep. But even so if I go in on the later night battles then there's maybe 1 raid on each side and 0 lag. Guess being on the West Coast is finally a benefit when it comes to timing!

Just a little spam post, sorry....

I only just realised what you meant with the title of this post :D

On our server people call it Winterlagg. First time i saw your post i was like: Winter slag....wtf?

It only just occured to me that you obviously mean Winters lag. I litterally just lol'd in the middle of the office.

Once again, sorry for the random spam...

Assuming the PTR prices are correct, we need 80 marks to buy the helm (15), boots (40), and trinket (25) in 3.0.8.
Which means I'm technically done since I don't care about the other items, but I'll keep running it anyways for the phat honor gain.
Tempted to skip it during the prime time lag fests now, though it is soooo much fun spamming SoC and racking up 100+ kills in a single battle. I can only imagine how much havoc a Warlock multiboxer could wreak... :)
