so I leveled a herbalist and I'm debating on making one of my toons either an inscriptionist or alchemist(transmute master). the cost of the herbs isn't an issue, I'm just wondering if either is a good money maker at 80.

Have you guys found profitable transmutes? If I become a transmute master at 70 do that apply to wrath transmutes?

I have gotten a minor discovery in inscriptions that has been very profitable(Pestilence), but I haven't seen too much that it would be profitable at 80.

any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

I have one of each (alchy, inscriptor) and neither is a huge money maker. There are minor exceptions -- I created a few Nobles cards with inscription (420 inscription or so skill?) and each sold for 2k gold, cost me around 100g in mats. However its random which card you can create, and the other decks aren't worth as much -- one card only sold for 50g, so a 50g loss. You need a HUUGE amount of Northrend herbs for inscription and making the 80 Darkmoon cards, since each stack of herbs will generate 1-3 icy pigments, and you need 12 icy pigments per card (plus 3 eternal lifes).

Alchy is prob even worse, the titanium xmute is on a 4 day cooldown (!) changing to 1 day in next patch. Titanium isn't worth much and the mats are heavy. Really not much else to xmute, since the eternal xmutes share a cooldown with titanium (plus you need to "discover" all of them via titanium). Alchemy is a money sink for the most part, its nice to make certain flasks for your team but its not a money maker.

The best money maker at the moment is obviously mining/herbing, followed by Jewelcrafting imo - 15 mins doing a daily nets you 300g+ every day.

If you're doing your daily research, there really aren't many additional benefits for inscription, so I'd go Alchemy for the extra xmutes. Check out this thread for WotLK profession benefits:
