Vyndree
11-27-2008, 07:32 AM
Ok, so the name "Vyndree" was made up out of my own creative little brain when I was playing Guild Wars like... 3 years ago.

domain: vyndree.com
created: 12-Dec-2005

Ok, there's proof.

Mine.
MIIIIIINE.

http://www.wowarmory.com/search.xml?searchQuery=vyndree&searchType=all

Who the heck is Vyndree of Zangarmarsh ('http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Zangarmarsh&n=Vyndree')?

And WHY is there both a Vyndre ('http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Zangarmarsh&n=Vyndre') and a Vyndrie ('http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Zangarmarsh&n=Vyndrie') in their guild? That's my warlocks' names...
http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/9633/warlocksdemoii7.jpg

And further irony -- their guild master's name is Luai ('http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Zangarmarsh&n=Luai'), which is none other than the name of Suvega's warrior ('http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Archimonde&n=Luai')!!

Serious lack of creativity. For shame!

Shoulda gone with a name like Ocktlupjetorsikuao or something.

At least then you are CERTAIN no one will ever steal it. And if they do, it would be just to annoy you.

Imitation is the highest for of flattery right?

My original main was a warrior named Caspian created 7/04/05 (US date), not unique or original but I did just finish reading voyage of the dawn treader. There was some dude named Caspiann on my server. It wasn't enough that he hacked my name and his stupid friends kept whispering me instead of him oh no, he had to like follow me around and try to talk to me. He was like the annoying little freshman your senior year that somehow managed to guess what you were going to wear everyday and wanted to be you and followed you everywhere. They could not drive but yet showed up at every party you went to and were always "there".

Well I guess I never really had one of those in high school so maybe my virtual me is cooler then the real me. Which is very cool since I box now, and there are lots of virtual mes running around. I wonder if my virtual coolness bleeds over and gives me some real life coolness, I would certainly hope so, I need it.

You could so follow the teen trend on Durotan and go with Vyndreedx for or Xtrmvyndree. That would rock. Ninjavyndree would be a hit too, if Chucknorrisvyndree is too long.

My main name is Avozzo, i came up with it for about 4 years ago, when i searched the armory last time i saw some guys that actually have made chars with that name to. I never thought stuff like that could happen. Some of the chars are mine tho :p but not all.

Spatulor
11-27-2008, 02:28 PM
I have never, in almost 5 years of using the name, seen someone else with the name Spatulor, but I think that variations on my multibox characters names (Tchak Tchek Tchik Tchok Tchuk) are possible, if not even likely.

Some guy, David Gemmell, ripped off my name "DeathWalker" and wrote a book about it. Using my name to sell his books ... what a scam.

Malekyth
11-27-2008, 02:46 PM
I was horrified when I started seeing Malekyths showing up on other servers. Then I remembered that I ripped the name off, minus one extremely creative vowel change, from the Thor comic. Someone accused me of ripping off the Warhammer Witch King's name, and we had a long friendly discussion about the actual origins of the name, and where both Warhammer and Marvel Comics likely got it. Some Norse saga-singer is rolling in his grave at all these breaches of trust, I expect.

Vyndree
11-27-2008, 07:40 PM
Well, I searched my name just to see if anyone had "common inspiration" since the name Vyndree was 100% original... Prior to that I used a name that was inspired by a minor character in a book (and edited some letters to make it different), but "Vyndree" was something I thought up while staring at a character generation screen in GW.

I wasn't really too shocked about another "Vyndree" until I found the "Vyndre", "Vyndrie" and "Luai" in the guild. That's a bit too creepy to be inspiration.

My "Main" in BC is Velani, a draenei shaman. Of course, she was a "trash alt" that I created just for fun and didn't expect to level past 20, but ended up being my name. There are ten billion Velani's everywhere -- and you know why? It's a name from the WoW random name generator.

There do seem to be a number of Vyndres, Vandrees, etc...when you have a few million people all trying to find names that aren't taken, there tends to be a trend towards repetition even when it seems random/original.

But the sequence of names is pretty hard to chalk up to anything but deliberate imitation.

I did a google on Vyndree and it asked 'did I mean vandree?'

Search on Vandree lists a forgotten realms character from some sourcebook

Maybe vyndree isn't as original as you think it is

But then whose names are?

merujo

my last name is Merujo, and i've used it for a long time now in online gaming. it's a portuguese word for sailor, but, bad writen (the good one is Marujo)

Did it not came to anyone's mind that it's possible that out of the 16 million people that played wow, there are 2 or more people who come up with the same name?

Some of the names do not require that much creativity? :/

No offense, just pointing it out.

tbh...

1. who cares? ;)
take a look at the trade channel in WoW, how much creativity can you expect from these guys? :)

2. the dogs always hunt the one with the bone.
looks like someone wants to be like you, imitating is always the first step in creativity.
you start with imitating something and after that you start modifiying it to create your own thing.
just take it as a compliment.

zanthor
11-28-2008, 12:25 PM
http://www.wowarmory.com/search.xml?searchQuery=Zanthor&searchType=all

I first used Zanthor as a name of a D&D character (not AD&D) in 1980 when I was 8 years old... By the time I was 11 I had the name registered on a half dozen BBS's (For you young pups, the interwebs wasn't always around ;)) and a few years later He-Man had introduced a character named Zanthor some of it's cartoons...

When I started playing UO (1996) I created a character named Zanthor to be a great swordsman... ended up not knowing anything about game mechanics I failed epicly... I heard you could make good money as a tailor by killing bunnies and kitties and skinning them, making armor and selling it to the vendor so I created Travis and told all my friends he was Travis T. Tailor... just figured I'd earn enough gold to help out Zanthor... never ended up working. Apparently killing all those bunnies and kitties turned Travis into a great swordsman... anyhow, back to EQ in Beta 4 I created Zanthor and Band of the Black Hand, this time successfully... and he's been my main since.

Back when I started using Zanthor as a name on the internet I never had trouble registering for sites using it... as time has passed it's become all to popular and in many cases I've had to take other names to register... The first thing I try when a site tells me the name already exists is a password recovery, half the time it works :).

Gelgist - priest
Gelgadin - paladin
Gelgock - warlock

Gelaa, Gelab, Gelac, Gelad, and Gelae - letter varient of my origional name I used for my first boxing team when I server hopped.

Fast forward a year, time to fire up a new team. Log onto account 5, hit the random name button on a new server and what do I get? Gelaa....... *sigh* Ok, so I click the button to accept my fate, and get - Name is already in use. WTF? Gahhhhhhh!!!!

I normally wouldn't if it were honestly just a chance thing that someone came up with the same name as me.

I would be ok if someone named an alt after me as a joke or whatever. Or even a hunter pet.

When I find a guild that contains 3 of my characters' names and one of my boyfriend's, it makes me wonder if they're not trying to just pay homage to a kewl sounding name or pretend to actually BE me. It's a very creepy form of identity theft. Of course, I don't know 'em so I can't tell if that's what they're actually up to, but it's creepy nonetheless.

And "Vyndree" isn't that common (I've never read Forgotten Realms). The 2 characters besides the imposter on wowarmory are both me (the one on Archi and Mal'Ganis). There are 10 "Vandree"s, none of which are 60. *shrug*

Pre-TBC (and boxing) I was shocked when I saw another orc warrior (the same as my main) with the exact same name, while in AV. So I created characters on all the other servers on my battlegroup, to prevent this from happening (as much)

<---- original

...and by original... I mean you can't even find it using google. Not even on the spanish sites. I love how google comes up w/ the "Did you mean: farolito". No I didn't, but thank you for my next name.

Bah.. who needs a random name generator? Make your own random name generator...

It's a simple process:

1) Close your eyes
2) Roll your face across the keyboard
3) Insert vowels between consonants.
4) Presto! You have a unique name.

Vyndree, looks like a frame-job in the workings...

In game: "Yes, I'm the real Vyndree... go look at my site. My BF? He's in my guild too. My alts? See. Trust me now? Okay.. now, do this for me......."

I'd be concerned...

I came up with Pyrostasis when I was 15 the day before I got the internet so Id have a screen name. Took me and my friend about 2 hours to come up with some names we liked. I enjoyed making molotov cocktails out some cheap cologne my grandparents gave me every year, but Pyro was to popular, however Fire in a permanent state, or stasis, seemed to give it a unique spin.

So we came up with Pyrostasis.

I have used this name for over 10 years now, and just last year was rather saddened to find a euro rock band has formed with the same name. Hate to wish anything bad on anyone, but I hope they dont blow up into a huge success, as everyone will just assume I stole it =(

I demand royalties from crayola for using the colors of the rainbow.

The single box characters I play are named
Roirrawa
Namahsa
Eugora
Tseirpa
Nidalapa
Egama

Although most of those characters have been in deep hibernation for almost a year now, but Roirrawa and Eugora are still quite active.
Also my guild bank's guild name is Dliuga. 5 candy points to anyone who can figure out my naming scheme. /grin.

I got:

Nielic
Kethryllia (sp?)

and two others I can't think of right now from the RNG. :)I kept getting something like "Phil" for my female Paladin....I gave up after that.
I normally try to hit the button and then try to make a spin-off name if I can think of anything.

Vyndree,

How do you like playing 5 Warlocks? What level are they up to? What are your plans for them after you hit 80? I don't see too many people on here who 5-box locks, so I was curious. By the way, nice to meet you. :P I see you post all the time and you are always so helpful to anyone with questions.

Vyndree,

Take Care,

4 locks and a priest -- I dropped the 5th lock so I can level the priest up as my "main" for raiding.

The locks are fun. I'd say they're not as great at shamans for PvP survivability, but man do their dots hurt. My first PvP anti-gank was at level 49 with 5 warlocks, killing a 70 druid. Once I hit northrend at 68, I haven't really had a ganking problem unless there are multiple high-levels. The priests' mass dispell is very handy for bubble-bomber paladins and I'd say it's a toss up of which I kill with more consistency -- paladins or DKs.

PvE, the pets are really poor for tanking. However, for most elite quests I utilize Felguards (I've also done Felhunters when all of them were aff) and when they pull aggro I just drain life tank the elite, since it's usually at about 1/2 health anyway, while healing with the priest. I find SL/FG to be the most ideal spec for my pull style -- I just siphon life mobs as I run and when I gather a nice chunk of mobs, I turn around to let the FGs cleave it to death and (now that I have SoC) aoe them to death if need be. Mana is never an issue -- life tap is bound to CoH on the priest.

In general, I'd say I prefer hunters as a pet class if you're focused on PvE -- the pets tank (aggro + mitigation) better, and hunters have good sustained DPS and aggro dumps. Warlocks are better for PvP, however, since they have Soul Link, mobility, and don't suffer from facing in order to shoot/cast.
