New ele Shammy Changes 3.1

We are making some upcoming changes to the Elemental shaman tree. Our goal was to streamline a few of the utility-based talents while giving shamans a little more damage scaling in later tiers of gear.


Unrelenting Storm – reduced from 5 points to 3 points. Bonus is 4/8/12% of your Intellect returned as mana.
Elemental Warding – now reduces all damage (not just Nature, Fire and Frost) taken by 2/4/6%
Elemental Shields – this talent has been removed, since its effects were combined with Elemental Warding.
Storm, Earth and Fire – reduced from 5 points to 3 points, but keeps around the same net benefit. In addition to current effects, also increases Wind Shock range. The damage bonus to Flame Shock has increased to 60% at 3 ranks. Storm, Earth and Fire has been moved up the tree as well.
Shamanism – this is a new 5 point talent in the old Storm, Earth and Fire position. Your Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst gain an additional percentage of your bonus damage. We have not finalized the numbers, but it will probably be something like 10% for Lightning Bolt and 20% for Lava Burst at max ranks.

These changes will be available in the next minor content patch, and are in addition to the AE changes mentioned previously.

I don't entirely follow why the fire totem changes equal major AoE changes...anyone want to explain that one?

A Single Magma Totem does alot more pew pew just under par with mage and warlock aoe i believe. So for us boxers we can just drop magma totems now for trash and afk.

They said the Magma totem will be ticking for about 600 damage every 2 seconds and it starts out aggroless so it doesn't get whacked. While this is down x4 or however many you have you can do other things, while other AoE classes are very limited in what they can do. This is a large boon to us.

So maybe at 80 currently 1500 spell power is about 300 dmg which obviously will scale more with gear, but hey thats about 800 more dmg on crits,

for multiboxers that 800x5 = 4000 more dmg.

Hey from 40k to 44k crit lava burst, notbad... still overkill but not bad...

Hooooly...the "no threat" part means mobs won't aggro onto Nova & Magma? I thought it just meant they wouldn't count towards the caster's threat. That would be rather useful, especially if the magma DPS buff is substantial.

BTW, you get no exp if your totem kills a mob without you damaging it - just like hunter pets. So no AFK for you!!! :P

Humm seems like some possible boosting tricks could come into play. Still thunderstorm at the higher levels will do damage.

The only place I have successfully pulled over 20 mobs without them peeling back off is in an instance. Leveling 25 of anything at the same time I would think would take longer and lead to poppin' more antacid than its worth.

I cant wait until this comes out I have never much liked the searing totems.

Really no change to us from what I can read, other then our totems wont get smacked soon as they are laid down.

We already get AoE'ed. I believe the blizzard guy is refering to like, ive done Nexus and UK with all melee lol. No CC what-so-ever, and that has passed onto alot of instances, from what my guildies tell me you can do all non heroics without a single CC.

I've done alot of heroics now .. 4 shamans, and I haven't used Hex once .. (mostly because I haven't keybinded it). It's not needed at all, granted your tank is alright geared.

Being able to take more damage is always a good thing. The thing that I will be staying away from is unrelenting storm. There are few times that I am starved for mana (unless I am spamming healing) so right now this talent does no good for me. I think I had to take 1 point in it to advance to the next tier in my current spec.

You keep all mana totems down? i never have mana issues unless I do something stupid and have to chain heal too many times. Even then I have not had one boss fight where i ran out of mana. I refresh water shield, keep mana totems down. I've cleared UK, Nex, and both spider zones so far.

And on topic>> WOOT!!!! I use nova/magma all the time when clearing trash. I am soooo happy about this!! 8)

I would agree that in pvp it is easy to run out of mana. I find myself spamming chain lightning every time I have the chance. This will eat away at your mana pool pretty quickly.

Only times I ran into mana problems in PVE was when I first dinged 70 and did kara. Since then I haven't had a problem. I was messing around with the training dummies last night too see how much dps adding a mage would bring. I was timing how long it took for me to go from full mana to oom just casting lightning bolts. It took close to 2 mins to empty my mana pool. Heroic boss fights were usually 15-30 seconds for me.

Unrelenting storm isn't a bad talent. I just wouldn't take this over a talent that will increase your overall dps.
