View Full Version : Zangarmarsh - Where 5box FPS goes to die

My very stable setup has now fully imploded trying to 5 box in Zang. Even tried moving graphics settings way down.

Anyone else find this zone a graphics nightmare or is it me?

Are you running all 5 accounts on one box?

I have particular trouble with zoning into zangarmarsh/nagrand up near the mountains close by the RoB but other than that Zangars fine for me.

Last time I had trouble it was on a box I forgot to update the video driver like the rest....

I didn't register "FPS" in the subject and so, chuckling to myself, I opened the thread waiting to see someone else's very familiar pain. But it was different pain! I was expecting to see "is this entire zone one big COLLECTION QUEST?!!!" And then some frowny emoticons, the "s31gtujergsdqf rda9g8ujdi9opg rsdagjd" that you get when someone bashes their head against the keyboard several times, followed by sullen silence as a few tears track their way down a cheek.

But the framerate issue sounds bad too.

Did you cap your FPS on your ALT clients?
How do you do this?

Good point.

Zangarmarsh seems to be significantly more intensive than Hellfire Peninsula, but nothing unplayable or even disturbing. I only notice some slowdowns when taking the elevator or while flying (flightmaster transport, that is, I don't have a group at 70 yet).

You can type in commands ingame :

/console MaxFPS 30
(This will limit the number of frames per second on your WoW window to 30 when it is active.)
/console MaxFPSbk 10
(This will limit the number of FPS even further when the windows is not active or in the background.)

Or set the default behaviour in you config.wtf :

SET MaxFPS 30
SET MaxFPSbk 10

Octopus and Keyclone also have this options if you are using their Maximizer abilities.

Yes, I have my slaves capped at 15 FPS, my main at 50.

Turned down all my graphics settings lower than normal (using the slider bar I'm now just one setting up from the lowest (or leftmost) level). My big problem was when I used the silder bar, it moved the shadow effect up one level. That shadow effect setting is the devil. I'm now playable again but have had two freeze ups while playing and can't crack 30 fps in my main. Just a really nasty zone for me. Only Shatt is worse.

Yes, I 5 box on a single machine running XP. Hardware is good, not great.

I was more interested to see if anyone else noticed a marked difference in Zang as I have. Sounds like not so much. ;)

Edit: ... was a silly question.

Ah the beloved Zmarsh. Yes, when i hit that zone in the summer with team 1 i had serious problems. I ended up forgetting about 5 boxing on one machine and built a second machine for the slaves. Even then the lifts killed me more times than i can remember.

This will get worse in the WOTLK zones as they have similar graphic intensive (lots of moving stuff) natrue. Might want to consider biting the bullet now.

Good luck;

I play 3 accounts on one box...and I never more then one up at a time (I play windowed/maximized for fast alt tabbing).

So tell me...would there be a point to NOT limiting my framerate to like 2 FPS when I'm not focused on them?

There are a bunch of people taking FPS hits since the past few patches. And all for different reasons it seems.

One thing that helped me out a little was turning of the QuestHelper mod.
You might try turning your mods off 1 at a time and see if that helps.

I was able to get back 15-20 FPS on all 3 of my machines.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Probably good advice, but I really try to get at least a year out of an upgrade and I just redid my rig early this year.

Yeah, QH is a major hog. I'm running just on my main and I know I'm sacrificing frames to keep it up. That said, its a 2 edged sword. Zones like Zang are exactly why I use QH. Lots of running around and it makes me a ton more efficient. (Presuming I'm not locking up of course.)

I'll have to watch how subsequent BC zones treat me. I'm 7+ levels from 70 but may only be 5 levels from WotLK if I decide to head there at 68.

For me I could not drop it lower than around 12 before it drove me nuts with extremely jerky video as I have my clones on the second monitor. If you can't see it then it does not matter, as long as your clones don't lose follow, etc.

Might be worth looking at the Tourguide/Tomtom/Lightheaded trio as a substitute for QH, I think (though I don't actually know) the resource drain is lower using those 3. QH is a known big time hog. You also have the added benefit of access to RAF/MB friendly tourguide files being available here on the forums.

This is the best thing since spam. Why doesn't this pop up in a window when you come to this site for stupid people like me?
