View Full Version : Dealing with the server community

Since my server has been down for hours and I have read all the threads ehre I thoguht I would start another one. This is about those of us that multi-box for PvE and not PvP. I had mentioned in another thread that I needed a thicker skin because I was having trouble with the constant whispers and hate from people. Someone mentioned that I probably received more positive or curious messages than I remembered because the nasty ones tend to stick in your mind and the nice ones are quickly forgotten. So I started marking on a pad of paper next to the computer in two columns marked "nasty" and "nice". After two weeks I have 22 nasty and 43 nice. I only counted /whispers and /say. I did not count /general and /trade. I will say that the number of nasty ones skyrocked after the expansion, where everyone is tense and tired and competing for the same quest items. There was one night when someone in the Tundra told everyone in /general to report me for botting and several people came to my "defense" and said I wasn't botting, but was just a pathetic loser running 5 accounts. There was a long debate over /general which I watched while I did my questing. In general though I have taken to doing instances at night and questing in morning/day to avoid too much unwanted attention.
The nasty whispers tend to to fall into two categories, people who have nerd rage toward multiboxing and people who think it is illegal botting.
Common negative whispers:
"reported for botting"
"reported"
"loser"
"get a life"
"you are cheap"
"you are pathetic"
"no talent loser"
"cheater"
The only hate message I have gotten that had any merit at all was this: "You are a f***cking asshat to take up 5 character slots on a server where people wait more than 40 minutes to log in.. "
Common confused whispers:
WTF?????
How do you do that?
Are you a bot?
I will say that a lot more people than I thought actaully think it is really cool. If I am not in the middle of something I will often "put on a show" for people who are cool and nice. Formations, elemetnals, Heroism, dancing, etc. A few times when people "reported" me I took the time to talk to them and in 3 out of 4 times they ended up no longer being mad once I explained what I was doing and let them know I had checked with Blizzard first. I really don't mind the ignorant people at all.. I can understand why they might think I am botting or whatever. What does sometimes still bother me are those people who know exactly what I am doing and cast judgement on me as a loser, cheater, etc. I always want to jump to my own defense and explain what I am doing and why I am doing it and "convince" them that it is ok, but after trying that a few times and coming away all upset I just automatically /ignore them.
Now I am very new to all of this. Started my team at level 1 about 6 weeks ago. I think that as I master each encounter I feel better about what I am doing. My team is almost 71, and I spent a lot of Saturday mastering Shattered Halls. (I know.. that so last year). I wiped 20 times or more learning that first Boss and that is even with the strategies posted here. That is a damn hard encounter. But in the end when I got the Figurine of the Collossos off the final boss (which was my goal) I walked away with a sping in my step. And I did it at the right level and expected gear for that instance. I personally think it is vastly *harder* to do instances multi-boxing than with a group of 5 people. When I downed the first UK boss last night after 10-14 attempts and then quickly killed him again twice more this morning without breaking a sweat I feel like I accomplished a very difficult gaming challenge. Especially considering my poor gear and bering new to multi boxing. When I went back to the inn to rest and encountered some hate it didn't even bother me.
I think that all yuo can do is be polite and nice, even in the face of hate. I buff everyone I see. I rescue people all the time. I assist with people who can't get a group for a 5 man quest. I answer questions and joke a round and put on fun displays for people. I th ink it helps, but I have come to understand that there is no cure for someone really in the grip of nerd rage towards you other than /ignore.

I just don't reply to anything negative (or pointless like wtf? tells) but tbh I dont get much hassle dunno why. I've got groups on pve and pvp servers. Mostly I get a wtf? or someone following me about for a few mins but thats about it. I've been 5 boxing since summer last year and I play about 20-30 hrs a week. In all that time I'd say my average negative tells/hate would be about once a week or less. I've never had to put anyone on /ignore.

Most people on my PVE server don't seem to care or notice. The most common things I get are people not realizing I have 3 more guys sitting inside the giant moonkin, and they get mad that I didn't invite them to some group for something.

I've had pretty much the same experience as you, except for the part where you have converted haters :P
My approach is to be as unresponsive as possible - those that hate just want us to take the bait! If they want to make remarks, they can type their little hearts out, as long as its not offensive/reporting me to a gm then I will happily ignore them.
If they call me a cheater/hacker or give the all too regular "REPORTED FOR CHEATING" line, i hit my bind that says "Educate yourself before you waste GM time." In past experiences, when I've tried to educate them via references to forum posts or mail i have received from gms they just double up on the "You're a liar/cheater/general bad person" lines, since they are just ignorant individuals 99% of the time.
It's always pleasant to talk to people who are interested. Luckily, on my server, there are more of this type of person than the former and I have referred scores of people to this forum. So if any euros are looking for boxing friendly realms, you can't go much wrong with Spinebreaker EU :)

Another thread on the dual-boxing forums pointed me towards the Therapist addon - http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info9780-AGT-AutomaticGoblinTherapist.html
This is seriously tempting, for those people who are just completely ignorant pricks and delight in trying to make you miserable for doing something you find to be a little more challenging then default vanilla wow.
Most people are positive in their interactions with me regarding boxing on my server. I've actually run into around a dozen 5-boxing teams while playing one of my teams or another. While making my latest team, someone was setting up another team beside me, very neat stuff to see there are others on my server doing the same.
A few people are negative no matter what. Mostly I ignore them completely if they are very hostile. But this addon could be very useful in this situation.

The nice ones im nice back, the rest get ignored. Help when people ask for it etc. When people /say /t im a looser, no life, fag, etc. I kindy reply "Your playing the same game I am" and leave it at that. I dont get bothered much as most of the time im in an Instance, but on the trips to town or if im outside questing for a change of pace, thats when I get bothered. All the global channels like trade and general I have turned off.
I'm terrible. I taunt them if they message me first with a negative message.
Like,
"Why do you cheat?"
"Because I'm better then everyone else."
"Your a loser."
"Thanks."
"Duel me."
I ignore duels, requests for duels, or anything as soon as I get into questing. It takes too much concentration.
"You won't duel me because you are a failure at games and life. You are a loser."
"First, I was kidding about being better then everyone else. Second, I wouldn't consider collect 100 armaments cheating. I enjoy multiboxing because its a challenge. And I would lose at dueling because my interface is set up to do instances and kill people who attack me, not to win duels."
"Oh."
"Is it worth it?"
"Yes."
"Do you really pay $90 a month?"
"I spend more on a night out in town."
"Yeah right. You have no friends."
"...says the 76 Death Knight?"
Sorry MB community. I just love to argue to much. It's a fun challenge that gets me thinking about the most ludicrous way to respond.
I ignore WTF tells. I don't attack anyone unless they've attacked me first in the past. I'm always willing to help.
The most annoying thing is people who go, "Invite." when I'm already fighting an elite spawn that they want. I already have 5 people in my party, and I wouldn't have time to type /invite whoever while fighting. Those people usually attack the elite twice then leave. Funny thing is though, if they would've stayed around and helped me kill it, I probably would've returned the favor.
I figure all in all, just keep a list and you'll know who not to group with in the future when you solo. If they are so immature already just imagine how horrible it must be to group with them. The answer I'd like to say to everyone who messages me with a negative tell to start would be, "I do it so I don't have to group with spoiled brats like you. This is just more fun."

I haven't got one bad msg for multiboxing on Deathwing. Most people that ask think it's pretty cool. Come on over to DW.
I did however get a PM telling me that my hair was fail. 8|

On the server I am now I do not think I have had one negative comment. I have had a few folks sit and stare and get an occasional LOL but nothing outwardly negative. I am a very helpful person though not saying most of us are not but I think myself very courteous. I will buff folks that pass by if I am camping a quest item I will let them go first. Than again I do the same thing at grocery stores I usually have a ton of items (I have 3 kids) if someone is behind me with a few items I will let them go first. I look at it as the same way.
If I ever get a negative comment I will ignore it I am good at doing that.
One thing I have been getting a lot of lately is "are you going to skin all of that?"

The first thing I do when I create any of my toons is turn /general off.
There are too many idiots that think everyone needs to hear what they have to say.
On my server, I almost never have problems when I play my Alliance toons, but the SECOND I log into the Horde site, the uglieness starts...
Last night I got:
Them: "HOLY SHYT are you 4 keying?"
Me: ??? I'm multi-boxing all these accounts, yes.
Them: "Naughty girl, you r gonna get banned" (female toon)
Me: I'm not botting, I'm multi-boxing and have complete control over these and I've been doing it for at least 6 months now. Go do a search on the blizzard forums.
Them: "LOL ur gonna get banned I should know"
Me: Ok, why?
Never heard from them again after that..

The haters usually just get a "Whatever, idiot" from me.
I hate the ones that say:
are you dualboxing? (or worse duelboxing) or are you leveling all 3? Or last night, "Are you dual boxing all 4 of those druids with the same name?" I always reply, "No, there are 5 of us." (I have managed to always not say, "learn to count idiot.")
If they can't properly spell the wtf? or how? I feel the rage building. Ugh I hate that, it's only 4 letters.
Most common response from me to the "what's multiboxing?" crowd: I assume you have a computer and an internet connection, you could try google.
I'm sick to death of trying to explain it to people. Moreso because 99% of them are too lazy to even read the wiki.
I swear logging on to the internet should require an IQ test.
The nasty whispers tend to to fall into two categories, people who have nerd rage toward multiboxing and people who think it is illegal botting.
Just install AGT and forget about them :)

I had a few tells saying -You Fail At Life!
I just ignore them. Most of my server knows about The Zerg and multiboxing. These comments usually come from unguilded people. They may be new to the server.

You don't have to be low on IQ to be:
- lazy
- rude
- ignorant
- mean
- an *sshole
- all of the above :P

i don't really get a whole lot of negative response from my fellow horde on boulderfist... there are a few (i haven't /ignored anyone) but when they start talking bad they generally get /shoo'ed by other people nearby. i love having other people come to my defense haha, saves me the trouble :P
alliance however, have come to hate me i'm sure. if they tag a quest mob i need, i make it a game to see if i can kill the player before he kills the mob.
do any of you ever get whispers from a lvl 3 of your faction saying 'dood ur such a fag, no skill. get a life noob' after you've killed one player a few times? i think it's hilarious when someone does this, it just makes me want to camp their main more. sometimes i'll report the alt on the chance that he's sharing someone's account to trash talk, and maybe it will get banned. i don't usually do this, only when i'm feeling especially douche-ey.
I'm pretty good at out-douching the alliance when I want to ;]

I love it. It's funny about Frosty's experience. I play on Exodar and it's just the opposite for me. When I was on alliance, the grief and cry babies was never ending. On the Horde side, which I started playing for WotLK, it's been great. Very few comments at all, but all positive.
I believe all of the news about the 36 boxer could have helped a lot too considering that I'm "only" running five toons.
I think I prefer "dickhead" better than "asshat." :D Could someone please make smiley emots for those two categorizations?

Once some retard started spamming my toons with random crap in whispers. After using "Report for spam" feature on 5 chars he suddenly logged off. Not sure what happened, but I really hope that 5 people's reports is enough to activate blizzard's automated banhammer

For the most part I had positive experience when pushing to 80. Got a 5 man Lock/Mage/Hunter/Priest/Pally team to 80, finishing last Sunday... I remember lots of positive comments especially when I agreed to help other solo players complete group quests provided it was not more than 100 yards out of my way.... One negative comment stands out there as it made me laugh... I was in an underground cave and was not paying attention to any of my screens as I was trying to figure out a quest. When I got back, I had been ambushed from three directions, fumbled to get the battle under control and completed rounding up to tank w/ my pally, healing everyone w/ my priest since my clothies had taken a beating and proceeded to kill the 6-8 mobs that were on me with no difficulty after regaining control of the fight.... Shortly thereafter, I got a whisper "How is it you multi-box 5 toons and yet all of them are total noobs?". Not sure what he thought was noobish.. the fact they were all 75 but had not seen a trainer yet, the fact they were all still wearing lvl 70 T5 content gear rather than any of the upgrades I had run across. The fact I still managed to maintain control of the fight with no deaths... rofl... good stuff

When I first read posts about getting hate whispers and other chatter I was surprised. I never seemed to get any flack for dual-boxing. People rarely even noticed. I even made a short jump to three and didn't seem to suffer any additional abuse.
However, the first day I tried 5-boxing, I got a _ton_ of hate.
So, is that just my luck in not getting noticed for 2/3-boxing or is it generally accepted that the 5+ boxers get the most abuse from the server community?
edit: oh, and i should mention ... people seem to get _really_ nice to me when i offer to sign their guild charters :-)

Well I two-boxed (manually, two-keyboards, two systems) from day 1 of WoW.
No one ever said anything to me.
I upgraded to a third account, and then decided why not go 5 if I'm moving up anyway?
Since then, I get a lot of comments, maybe 3-4 per playing session.
75% are positive, but 25% are negative.
I seem to get a lot of people /spitting on my toons.

I havenīt done much multiboxing yet in Lich King, spent the time leveling a solo-toon with some buddies when the masses
rushed into northrend, the lag and server instability surely would have attracted some nerd rage to my 5-box teams in the beginning :)
Done some questing now in Howling Fjord, itīs been fairly quiet and calm compared to 2 weeks ago. The only attention
iīve gotten is the occational someone looking/following a little when 5 gnome mages with conehead-hairdo come
bouncing and do a drive-by AoE on some moose-flocks (i havenīt been D.E.H.T.A's little H.E.L.P.E.R. at all)
I guess it would have been a bit more annoying to lvl on a PvP-realm, canīt say i regret PvE for multiboxing.

The most common things I get are people not realizing I have 3 more guys sitting inside the giant moonkin, and they get mad that I didn't invite them to some group for something.Same here, on Dreanor I havent had a whisper in a long time. Every once in a while a Horde player will ride around me and /chicken me, but that's mostly because my mage and lock are gnomes, and you know how some players are about gnomes. *sigh* The amount of duel spam has also dropped to nothing, which is a huge relief!
I only have 3 right now, and I guess I blend in - no tells, no hate, and I get invites to group a lot. (If I have my chat window open, lately I just turn it off, it's better for the stress levels that way.)
