i haven't seen a single piece of tanking gear so far (all dps plate)
my friend who's 75 says the same thing

what's the deal with this?
do tanking gear only drop in instances?

All the plate that i have been seeing is +spell damage and haste... which my dk doesn't need.

I've seen I believe a necklace drop in UK, and one breastplate that has decent defense, but no other stats (was much worse than the 75 badge chestpiece) from a quest.

Other than that it appears almost everything is from Blacksmithing for some time (to me so far). Pretty disappointing.

The quest rewards from the instances give exceptionally good tanking gear, actually. Some of the early instance quests are so easy that you can even complete it with an empty instance from someone else or just with a few trash pulls.

Cobalt set

Crafted green set requires level 70 - all str/stam/defense. Perfect for DK tanking IMO. Theres also another set at 75 or 77 called hardened cobalt that is a bigger upgrade. probably good to start out with before getting blues at 80.

edit: fixed link

I posted the plate quest / instance / crafted items I'm going for while leveling here ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=16587').

Personally I'm staying prot on my pally and already have all the tempered saronite pieces ready to go, filling in other slots with quests atm. While the quest dps gear could be used to tank, I find it to be much smoother if I have the correct amount of defense to be uncrittable at each level as I go.

So since all tanks use the same gear now a paladin tank guide would be good right

Seconded!
I was so happy to see that the Blacksmith now has a GOOD level 70+ tanking set(Cobalt) and a very good blue set at 75+ (Saronite set).
At level 80, there's an epic "Titansteel" set for tanking.

My Paladin will be sadly trading in her Plate Thong for a crafted Cobalt set at 70.

Saronite 74+ Blues

VERY good stuff, it might be worth it to save your ores/bars for the blue set.

^^^This.. I have all my gear waiting. with sockets added..enchants and all 8)

Also my mana pool goes down with each upgrade. I gain a shit load of stam and def and lose lots of spell power and int(mana) but I am NEVER oom. With sanc/jow/4xmana totems I hardly ever sit and drink.
