So, you can pick up a 64g SSHHD for about $160, anyone tried that and thrown the OS/Games onto it? I am considering doing this as I could see that would make a HUGE difference for the amount of data seeking that is done in wow.

Have you set up symlinks to your data folder as described in the Wiki? I would recommend trying that first if you have not; it can have a huge impact on city (and WoTLK I suspect) lag. Otherwise, a SSD is possibly a simpler way to get a similar benefit, and may be an incremental improvement.

Be aware that there are major differences in the read performance for the low-end versus mid-end SSDs; although I believe seek performance is similar.

Discussed at length in this thread:

A very good read indeed. How ever, do we have anyone running the full OS on the SSD instead of just the symlinked data folder?

There are alot of places where people talk about putting everything on the SSD. Not wow necessarily, but OS and games etc.

And while they get better performance in general, its because of better read performance. Many drives suffer from a stutter on writing. Just read any number of newegg reviews on the drives.

You will definitely benefit from an SSD - most have found symlinking the MPQs (or more precisely their folder)to be very helpful. IF you want to run the whole shebang on the SSD then do it and let us know how it goes. But the general consensus on SSDs is they are worth the money in applications where there is heavy reading and that you will want to stick with HDs in heavy writing apps.

Google is your friend :) (when can I get an implant that gives my brain direct acces to google?)
