View Full Version : How would a level 61 hunter tame a Core Hound from MC? Helped by my other 4 70's of course.

I've got my hunter nearing 61 (tomorrow, perhaps) and i would like to get an orange corehound from MC. I'm just not sure on how to tame the thing. I'm pretty sure that it would wipe the floor with me in 1-2 hits, and if i heal my hunter with my other shamans (70's), then i'm sure the tame will break, as the heals will aggro the thing.
Anyone have any tips, advice, and/or tricks on how to make this happen? I want to level to 70 with a corehound, not get to 70 and then get a corehound. If this is at all possible that is...

To help four hunters from my guild tame their core hounds, a bunch of people went to MC yesterday. So I can give you some information on how it goes. Firstly, my epic'ed out tankadin did not take any damage from the MC trash. You still have to look at their abilities - like the ever multiplying adds for the fire elementals that you have to kill - but they are essentially weak because they keep their level. For a level 61 hunter, they area definite problem though, you will need help. The mobs have about 120k or so health, so will take some burning down and are impractical without a tank.
What it gets down to, is that you want a tank, some dps and a healer with you. To get to the first core hound's patrol path, you will need to drop four molten giants, three fire elementals and a fast patrolling rock elemental. Once that is done, you have a shot at getting a tame done.
The hunters on our trip were all level 70 and their health barely lasted through the core hound's attacks during the taming time. Here is how you work around that. While taming, you have to have to be the hounds target, otherwise it breaks. If you just run in and start taming, you are the default target, but if someone heals you, that causes threat and the hound runs off. What you want to do is shoot the hound a few times to get a few thousand threat points in, another hunter using misdirection on you and also shooting the core hound helps a great deal. This gives you about 7-10k threat. Which means that your party's healer can heal you for twice that much without drawing aggro or interrupting your taming attempt.
Whats better from those in mc then the ones in outlands?

There are 3 types of core hound:
lvl 12 white one from azuremyst isle
lvl 62 Orange one from Molten core (Ancient Core hound)
lvl 69-70 Green one from SMV.
For the record the OP is lvl 61 and wants an orange one :)
EDIT: After reading a bit its only the lvl 62 Ancient core hounds that can be tamed, the lvl 61 Core hounds are part of the packs in magmadar/lucifron's room and cant be tamed. Also reading that you have to maintain aggro on the mob while ur taming it which means ur not gonna be able to do it even at 62 unless you managed to get very high dodge and fire resist. They hit pretty hard back in the day even in T1 gear and that was on a tank.

If you get some shots in and another hunter does the same after misdirecting to you, you have enough threat buffer for heals. Plus of course you can go in with Shield and mend. =]
The MC core hounds - besides being the original core hounds - have one visual advantage. They only change size, but do not look any more red when bestial wrath is used.

There are theatless heal spells... druid AOE heal spell is threatless if it has 2 talent points.

Holy Nova is threatless as well
Not sure about this but can those hounds be hibernated? I am guessing probably not

The Beast in UBRS is also tameable at 63 and doesn't hit near as hard.
As a few other people have said, all you have to do is hold aggro while you're being healed. Shoot the Core Hound for as long as you can until it closes, have another Hunter or two Misdirect to you and then have the healers heal only the minimum necessary.
Edit: I refuse to get one of the white wolf Core Hounds or one of the green ones in SMV. I've wanted a Core Hound pet since my first trip into MC way back in the day, and by gosh I'll have one!

Ah yes I forgot about the Beast in UBRS, he would indeed be the best bet as far as someone trying to heal you while u tame him. I remember tanking him with my shaman at lvl 60 altho my gear was amazing.
One tip I read was that if u use a haste potion u will lower the cast time to 15 seconds from 20 which would make a difference :)

There seems to be a bit of a debate on wowhead about wether or not the beast is tameable. Someone who said he is posted this pic http://img410.imageshack.us/my.php?image=firebalt3wc3.jpg.
I dont know if that is proof tho, but I also dont know why someone would lie about it!

I started the game around TBC's arrival so I've never fought one, but what about having a couple mages rotate frost nova to keep it out of melee range while it was tamed? Put up a few shots to get some threat, start the tame, nova nova nova.
or check comments on wowhead about how people did it http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=11673#comments

I'm not sure if they're vulnerable to any CC method.
My hunters would always use a Freezing Trap so 75% of the taming event has the mob standing stationary.
I have tamed a rare on several occasions, by having my mage Sheep it. Once the taming ends, the sheep breaks and you have yourself a pet.
I'm not sure if they are vulnerable to CC's, but if they are, this would be a huge help.

Hint: Bloodlust ('http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=2825') + Haste Potion ('http://www.wowhead.com/?item=22838')
At least in 2.4.something they stacked and helped tame speed. Correct me if I am wrong/it has changed?

Neither Ancient Core hound's or The Beast can be CC'd unfortunately.

Just thought I'd chime in how my wife and I tamed one for her hunter
we took a prot pally, holy pally and the hunter. What we did was get the prot pally to hold the core hound until the hunter had 20k or so threat then the tankadin Divine Interventioned the healer (leaving the hunter the only one on the threat table for now, and no durability loss for tank) then the hunter has a massive threat lead to tame while the healer can heal as needed to get through.
