"Namco Bandai has announced that it is set to shut down all the servers for the struggling MMO, Hellgate: London.

The publisher will continue to support the title and offer it for free until the end of January, after which the severs will be shut down.

"Namco Bandai Games America... will continue to support customers of PC game Hellgate: London with online server support and play through January 31, 2009 despite the closure of Flagship Studios," the company said in press release on the game's website ('http://www.hellgatelondon.com/').

"In a further gesture of support, Namco Bandai Games will provide this server support free of charge to all fans and players of the game up until the shut down date."

Earlier this year, Hellgate: London's developer, Flagship Studios, closed its doors ('http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/flagship-studios-closes-doors') with some of the staff going on to form Runic ('http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/flagship-seattle-reforms-as-runic-games')."

This is sad.

The game had a LOT of potential.

Ah well, what can you do.

Yeah I was so excited when they opened Open Beta.. got in started playing... personally I really liked the game play.. what I didnt like is that it was too much FPS and not enough RPG you know? I remember a guy beat the beta (got to the max level) without changing gear, wtihout allocating any stat points, and without training any skills. That was just wrong.

And the quest NPCs / story line was just so damned hoaky.

I promptly cancelled my preorder.

I got it free with my graphics card. Walking around in a post-apolyptic London sounded cool, in reality the levels had a very similiar feel and similiar look, well, you had about 3 or 4 different types of levels but it soon grew very old. It was a straight Diablo clone. Extremely repetitive. I finished the solo campaign just for completions sake but I wasn't impressed.
