View Full Version : A few questions as a new dual boxer

Hey guys. I read a lot of the "before posting stuff", however my questions are maybe somewhat vague. I've been leveling on the recruit a friend by simply having the second player follow me until now. I've been playing almost since day one so not much is new to me as far as content and i am usually pretty skilled, however i've been having some problems with dual boxing.
I think my first problem, which might already have corrected itself was that the lag on the server was causing the mobs to run behind me, which then, during every fight i had to turn the slave around while trying to dps on main. Mainly a latency thing which was pretty frustrating.
I'm running with a lock and mage, which i started before i started dual boxing. I just started today and was really excited about being able to actually use both characters while i lvled them up rather than just the one. My chars are around level 25 and i'm in ashenvale.
My problem is that i actually feel like i'm leveling slower than i did just using one character to dps. I know this seems counterintuitive, but when i just had the guy on follow i wasn't having as many issues. I will go ahead and list the problems I have out and then i can give some specifics on them.
A. My slave often stops as i keep running, when i look back he's a mile behind and i have to have him catch up... which is a huge time waster.
B. Turning the mage around while trying to dps with the lock is awkward.( Not really a question, but i'm open to easier suggestion.)
C. Multiple mobs are seemingly more of a problem.(Again, vague. Hoping for people who have more experience or have encountered this and fixed it.)

BTW i am using Keyclone.
Expanding on A., i am using this macro:

/target focus
/follow
/assist
/stopcasting

My lock is the master and i use the hotkey: 1 for his dots, while it is also the command for this macro on the mage. My idea behind this was that it was still usable with no target selected, but with a target selected, i could make sure the mage was ready to assist me while waiting to hit with shadowbolt as to give the voidwalker time to gain a little aggro before frostbolt barrage. I only have the mage casting frostbolt spam. I've found tons of things that were messing me up. Most of them i fixed with do-not-pass keys. Space bar, strangely, did not interrupt follow for quite some time. The slave would jump with the master, but never stop following him.... since i had to put space bar on do not pass because it randomly started interrupting him. In addition i've found the slave will stop following... when i alt+tab to check out why, he often appears to have opened a chat box. I tried going into his hotkeys and removed hotkeys for chat opening commands while putting the Enter button into the do not pass list. I have no clue why he's stopping now.

Sorry if this is vague, but i can reply back with any details needed. I'm just somewhat frustrated after having spent money and i seem to be leveling slower than before on the RAF program.

First off, start with using the Jamba addon, can be found in the Macro and addon forum. It has "autofollow after combat" ability and much much more.
Gonna read through your post again and see if I can answer more.

Things that breaks follow:

Turning, strafe, forward, back, sitting, channeled spells, autoattack, wanding.
Jump only breaks follow while swimming.

For my setup, I only have autorun and TAB in do-not pass.

Hope this answers some of your problems.

LOL! I actually have most keys set to do-not-pass (dnp) cause I am constantly using guild chat, party, etc... and I found it to be annoying... anyways... back to the topic at hand. I am also running a lock/mage team and have WASD as dnp and I use num 8, 4, 6 and 2 to make both toons turn on the spot or run backwards etc. (which breaks follow). I have never had a problem with wanding breaking follow, but I will check that out...

Another problem I noticed playing another team (Warr/Priest), is when trying to use shift/alt/ctrl and the numbers, that a lot of the alt and ctrl are also bound, so check the key binding in the menu

Hope this helps :)

write a macro for your mages frostbolt as follows

/assist warlocksname
/cast Frostbolt

keep the macro icon as the question mark, as the "/cast Frostbolt" line will automatically select the frostbolt icon from your spellbook. Use that macro instead of using the actual skill from your spellbook.
Thats a pretty simple and basic macro, and should help you a lot until you learn more about macros.
I'm still relatively new to Multiboxing as well, but once you get into it, you learn how to utilize macros ingame pretty quickly.

I would also suggest if your using keyclone to make use of the built in maximizer and create a small pip window so you can monitor your mage while you play your lock without having to alt+tab out.

Don't put so many keys on do not pass it'll cause you headaches later...mostly just DNP on:

w a s d e q / enter numlock tab escape

Thats probably good enough.

If you want to guild chat, that should mostly prevent your alts from doing it, or you can just hit the pause key before chatting and it wont send anything to your other window (thats what I do).

Also, wanding does not break follow.

nothing should be getting to melee range but i do think i know what your talking about. is it the trick where you send the void in and when the mob pulls it just keeps on going.to that i suggest sending the void in and not doing anything until you know if theyll stay put that way you can keep slave on follow and just turn around and take a few steps to turn it around. casting dots, shadowbolts and frostbolts wont break follow so instead of keyboard turning just run a little half circle.

also id go fire mage it always seemed much better for quick kills especially at early levels to me. plus you shouldnt need the slow effect. not trying to tell you how to play just some things ive noticed in my experience. also i second the suggestion to use the keyclone PiP. its awesome.

and remember it wont be fast to level until you get all the kinks worked out. this is supposed to add a challenge. dont consider it like a cheat mode to fast progress or you probably will be dissappointed at first.

do not put space in your do not pass list. hehe. sometimes you will need to have your slave jump over rocks or tress or something. its handy dandy.

also, use PiP with Maximer in Keyclone. you will be able to see both screens and they will show you whats going on. typing "/" will cause your slave to start typing. so you might want to put that on the do not pass list too.

i would use the PAUSE/BREAK key to turn on/off broadcast, which is a better way, imo, to chat. simply press the button and you turn key broadcasts off, press it again, and you're back to commanding your characters. a chime will tell you when its turned on. =] awesomeness.

as far as macros go, if you have your mage target your warlock all the time, then you can either use the targettarget setting or the focustarget setting to target mobs with spells.
if your mage makes your warlock the target, then macro-ing your spells with [target=targettarget] will have your mage cast spells on your warlock's targets.
if you make your mage focus on the warlock, then maro-ing your spells with [target=focustarget] will have your mage casts spells on your warlock's targets.

the problem with having a lock/mage combination is that they play differently. as you've mentioned that you would apply dots. the mage would have no dots to apply. and even the mage's instant casts are pretty powerful enough to draw aggro when your dots are just barely starting to tick. one thing you can do is make your warlock destro with an imp fireball-ing also. this will increase your dps during fights but will require you to sit and drink more often than not. spells with casttimes should be grouped together, unless you find some way of using using your mage after you've applied the dots to your target. if you want, you can even delay the mage's spells by placing in spacers, which will cause the mage to do nothing if a key is pressed. for example- "/castsequence reset=combat , , , , , Fireball, fireball, fireball, fireball"
if you notice the commas with empty spaces, they prepresent nothing. exactly. if you press the key, you'll do nothing until the 6th keypress. on the 6th keypress, you will then do a fireball. this is usefull if you match this up with your warlock's dots. so your warlock will probably have a macro that looks like this- "/castsequence reset=combat/target Immolate, Curse of Elements, Corruption, Siphon Life, Drain Life, , , , " this will cast your spells up until drain life. at that point, you will then see your mage casting fireballs. you can set this up any way you want though, with any spells in place in any order and with any amount of pauses you want. i personally wouldnt use this unless to rotate CC or something. This is only one way of controlling the casting of both characters. try it out. you might like it you might hate it. also note that its hard to macro a castsequence when you're using targettarget or focustarget.

in any case, since you are using two casters, having the lock cast curse of elements will improve the damage you and your mage will do. this might be bad if you're trying to keep the mob focused on the voidwalker. if, however, you feel that you burn through mobs way too fast to even worry about the void losing aggro, then maybe you can go with an Imp or Succy for dps. or even a felhound for its usefulness in auto-removing some debuffs. play through many combinations and you'll probably find your groove.

/assist is bad!
use:
/cast [target=YOUR_SYSTEM] Spell
YOUR_SYSTEM could be focustarget , party1target, nametarget etc.
