Hi all, wonder if you can help me, my Pally Tank used to be able to run in to SM and pull most of the instance in 3 of the different zones however since the patch and new talent points I am getting close to or almost dead by the time I make it back to my group waiting for me near the start... how have you spent your talent points to keep things like it was before, or has it just become a lot harder to pull the while instance in SM?

Not sure what they changed but with aoe caps going up (or being eliminated?) I can pull considerably more with my warlock or priest. Not the whole instance of course, but more than a few rooms

I can't really speak all that well to pulling all of SM following the patch but I have noticed my pally being a bit tougher to kill post patch. He's only 66 at the moment but just running around Hellfire I was impressed by the numbers of mobs I could tackle all at once.

If you'll excuse the length of the following, it's a summary of his talent trees (more or less, I reconstructed it from memory because WoW Armory doesn't have his talents updated):

Holy (0 points)
None

Protection (51 points)

5/5 Divine Strength
5/5 Anticipation
3/3 Improved Righteous Fury
2/5 Toughness
2/2 Divine Guardian
3/3 Improved Devotion Aura
1/1 Blessing of Sanctuary
5/5 Reckoning
2/2 Sacred Duty
3/5 One-Handed Weapon Specialization
1/1 Holy Shield
3/5 Ardent Defender
3/3 Redoubt
3/3 Combat Expertise
3/3 Touched by the Light
1/1 Avenger's Shield
2/2 Guarded by the Light
3/3 Shield of the Templar
1/1 Hammer of the Righteous

Retribution (6 points)

5/5 Deflection
1/3 Heart of the Crusader

I think it's just a matter of adjusting to the new Pally mechanics. Using the new Judgement of Light I get back double what I used to using both Seal and Judgement. Popping Holy Shield as often as you can and perhaps using Devotion Aura will definitely keep your mana up and damage down.
Let me know how that works. I was planning on using my own Pally to start software dual-boxing.

I just tanked ZA for the first time this morning and i'd have to disagree. i didn't die a single time and my gear is way lower than what it should be to be tanking in there. killed all the bosses first try.. and i'd never even been past the first 2 bosses. so ya paly tanks rock now, not to mention my dps was insane in there. i was like number 4, beating a shaman and a mage.

i put all 61 points into prot

Did they not make all bosses hit less and have less health point for everythign above Karazhan? And I know Pally tanks have also imrpoved for single or even a few mobs at the same time however I still not managed to pull the whole instance in SM, guess just have to get used to pulling half and hlaf again until I work out or someone points out if I am missing a trick as I feel like I managed to forget to do something with the talent points or even spells that I now need to use.

I assume you're boosting in SM? DId you not forget to spec Pursuit of Justice? That was the talent that made all the difference for me when I was boosting in SM. Getting ahead of the mobs while running back was a great advantage!

All level 70 dungeons including Khara were nerfed by significantly reducing health points and melee damage of all mobs (bosses and trash).

I've trown my shield away and started tanking with a 2 handed sword ;) So for me it feels like the other way round.

Yeah I actually specced ret for fun and had a go at boosting my lowbies in SM the other day. With 15% extra run speed I had no problems pulling, renewed my mana with every Judgement crit, crazy ret aura dmg and free Flash of Light heals to keep hp up. Insane boosting potential and with my boostees being 4 specced healers ret is the new tanking spec IMO ;)

heh, I hear you, we did a regular Ramps group, no healer, no tank, 2 ret pallys. (was 3, but 1 left 1/2 way through)

A couple deaths, 1 wipe in the begining but no one died on the bosses.

Also, does the Imp Devo aura affect judgement of light?

gg.... pursuit of justice...

I've never been able to boost like people say on here with my pally and been like WTF? I never thought of PoJ as I skipped it early on because it would just make me run away from my alts. /sigh

...still worked fine for me this weekend when I was boosting Souca's alts.

I didn't notice excessive damage, but my pulls were always considered a little conservative. I like conservative pulls. I can chat with friends/watch a movie/listen to an audiobook while boosting.

Seal of light is godly right now (it's bugged to give health on EVERY hit, and wis as well -- with parries I can go from 5% health all the way up to full in seconds). I am also killing 10x as fast and not having to drink evar thanks to BoSanct.

Also, SoV is unaffected by reckoning. ;) Apparently SoV is our new tanking seal as per Maintankadin ('http://maintankadin.failsafedesign.com/viewtopic.php?t=15684')

Q: Should I spec Reckoning?
A: No. Your tanking seal is SoV, and reck doesn't help.

They changed BoSanct to reduce dmg in % and not a flat amount, that might be something of an negative effect when boosting in lowlevel instances ?

Was just about to post it before I noticed the very last poster got it dead on :) The new BoSanct is a buff for end-game where you're only getting hit by usually no more than 3-4 mobs, or hard hitting raid bosses. However against 50+mobs low level mobs it was a nerf.

Old BoSanct - Reduces damage from melee strikes by up to 81 dmg reduction

Boss hits you for 4000-81= 3919 (2.025% dmg reduction)

LvL 40 mob hits you for 100 - 81 = 19 (81% dmg reduction)

New BoSanct - Reduces damage from all sources by 3%

Boss hits you for 4000 * 97% = 3880 (120 dmg reduction)

LvL 40 mob hits you for 100*97% = 97 (3 dmg reduction)

So basically while BoSanct was good news for Endgame, it hurt boosting big time. Not so much that you can't still do it, but let's just say that the old Zolo trick would of been a pain in the ass to do today...

Get a sporegarr shield / skullflame shield / force reactive disk...
Slap a shield spike on that bad boy...
Put on Ret. Arua...
Use max rank consecration...
Equip the Figurine of the Collossus...
Eat some stormchops (yummy!)...

...and stop QQ'ing. :pLawl... You might want to learn what QQ'ing is :P

I meant it was a nerf to boosting in the sense of purely comparing Old BoSanct to New BoSanct as in the damage reduction difference :P

Overall all the Prot pallies got buffed majorly for both end game and boosting. Even the New BoSanct while it doesn't absorb damage as well from many many different sources of damage, the mana back is incredible! I would never go back to the way it was before :P

With unlinked RAF-boosting on the nerflist any day now, I don't really see the BoSanct issue as that bad. It only affects BOOSTING using a prot pally, and RAF's on the chopping block for that anyway.

If you planned on using RAF for boosting and haven't yet, I'd start finishing up asap. BoSanct nerfs aren't nearly as bad as having to do boost 3x as long to get the same amount of levels. I've done it pre-RAF, and didn't mind it then, but RAF questing would be faster than non-RAF boosting once the fix goes through.

However with the increased damage that prot pallies now do, it shouldn't be a problem, you just might have to change your tatics alittle bit if you're trying to pull the whole instance rather than breaking it up :)
