I have been leveling mining on one of my toons and I noticed that they extended the number of points you can get from smelting. I decided to level a miner on my second team and it is possible to level to 225 without having to buy a mining pick.

Unless you have a ton of gold laying around or another miner this guide may not be for you. I hung around in zones when I was leveling the first miner to gather up the extra ore, and I always stopped smelting once it went grey for my main miner.

125 copper ore = 125 copper bars -> (copper bars) 65
* talk to trainer to get mining to 150
24 tin ore = 24 tin bars -> 75
48 copper bars/ 48 tin bar =96 bronze bars -> 104
24 copper bars /24 tin bars = 48 bronze bars -> 107
30 silver ore = silver bars -> 125
* talk to trainer to learn smelt iron and up to 225
40 iron ore = 40 iron bars -> 152
48 iron ore = 48 iron bars -> 159
18 gold ore = gold bars ->175
60 mitril ore = 60 mithril bars ->215
20 mithril ore = 20 mitril bars ->221
22 mithril ore = 22 mitril bars -> 225

a couple of notes,

1. the reason I put in somethings twice is because it took a lot of ore to get those last points, if you are short on cash or ore it may help you to just go mine those points and not smelt them. But I don't want to tell you how to live your life.
2. I approximated the gold ore because I was a couple short and just mined to fill in the gap.
3. at 225 mitril ore is still green, once I level him higher I will update the guide.
4. total shopping list 125 copper ore, 24 tin ore, 48 tin bars, 30 silver ore, 88 iron ore, 18 gold ore, and 102 mitril ore. Results may vary.

Very interesting information, thanks.
Even if not used from 1 to 225+, you guide will be very useful to close those annoying gaps well levels fly much faster than gathering professions progress.

I hate being a naysayer, but remember indivdual results will vary.

From what I've noticed on my many toons throughout the years, mining/smelting is the most freaking random chance to skill up ever. Granted, I haven't leveled a miner in months, so it might be better (I remember them talking about mining in a previous patch)

Good luck to any that level mining!

I am trying to level herbalism (tough), mining (hard), skinning (easy) and disenchanting (enchanting) on a character in each of my three groups. It is a pain.

Yeah the main reason why I wrote this up is because you can save yourself a ton of time just smelting ore and not running around. Especailly the first 100 points, you can level them pretty quick and cheaply with out leaving a major city. I also didn't realize you could smelt Iron and mithril for so long.

And Aethon, Yes I remember it being much worse as well, and that's why I put in the different levels that use excessive ore, like 24 bronze bars for 3 points,

Thanks for posting this. I have been mining so I can level my DK's blacksmithing in wrath and was saving ore rather than smelting so I could try and see how far I could get. This is great news knowing if I gather enough now I wont have to go to the lowbie zones on my DK.

That begs the question are DKs really going to start professions at 1 and have to level up to 300 and beyond?? it seems like 200 ish would be more appropriate.

I smelted my way to 285 and I added the +5 enchant on my gloves.

With enough gold I was able to smelt my way to 285 then I went to silithus bug caves for about 6 ooze covered thorium mining events and only had to find 4 more events to get me to 295+5 and back to the outlands and fel iron for the rest.

Any beta testers out there that can add any info about where professions start? That'd be good to know while grinding mats.

they start at 1, like every class.

One little tidbit for when you actually start hitting nodes. Find 3 or 4 mines within a close distance of each other. Go to Mine 1, mine it, BUT DO NOT LOOT THE ORE, go to Mine2, mine it and again do not loot ore. Repeat starting from Mine 1 and each time you mine you will get a skillup until it starts hitting yellow/green. Mines take a few mins to reset in order to get a skillup (not sure of actual time.)
