Depends on what the actual problem is. When you start having the issue, hover over the little latency bar next to your backpacks on both your main and your clone.
If the number is less than 100ms, its probably video/system lag, if the number is >100 (or more importantly 150 or greater) its probably a latency issue.
if its a latency issue and you're in the US playing on a US server, you should search the forums for "latency trick" which involves modifying your registry to change a couple values. I did this on my system and dropped my average latency from 125 down to 50. This makes it so I can easily have 4 clones following my pally on epic mounts with crusader aura and not lose follow ever.

i wish latency were my problem...but its around 50 on both accounts. my frame rate us usually around 100 too if that matters. any other ideas?
i only have this problem with dual-boxing. anyone else can /follow me and its fine, or i can /follow anyone else too.

You should try setting a /console maxfps 30 and /console maxfpsbk 15
It sounds to me like your background wow is starving with only a single core CPU to feed both.

Rarely, but occasionally, even prior to Keyclone use (with two physical systems).
The toon following, in a few area's of the game, will suddenly find something to the side to be worthy of investigation and veer off.
I'm guessing the issue is poor pathing code, because even with minimal latency this consistently happens in the same spots.
Does your /follow break all over the place, or only now and then, and possibly in the same areas?

/follow breaks everywhere except for occasionally in rfc.
il have to try the fps thing when wow comes back online. when i look in processes 1 wow has about 7 cpu usage and the other has around 40...im guessing thats bad.

If you're using Keyclone...
Setup.
Command Editor.
Click your Command (Mine is WoW1, WoW2 etc).
Towards the bottom, under username, in the two boxes insert: 10 and 40.
The first is Frames Per Second for the background warcraft's and the second is for the front.
Then hit Ok.
In general, the background is less important. The foreground should be as many FPS as is stable/smooth to play for your system.
Reducing graphics options particularly objects in the distance and improve your frames per second.
I'd personally not reduce the distance where creatures/npc's become visible by too much of a margin, but objects such as tree's or rocks won't be missed.

I know what this is like. My "main" toon that the others is a BM hunter with the speed buff talent. It's really annoying to have to stop regularly to let the others catch up. I'll never take another speed buff on her if I can help it (unless they tie it in with a needed talent buff again).
