Prepared The 36 Boxer of World of Warcraft
WE ARE PREPARED for any encounter in World of Warcraft! Player versus Player? Sure! As long as all my characters are there for the battle!

Xzin Edit: 10/15/08 - Front page of Yahoo!!!!

Bradster Edit: I've decided to repost this on the front page. After I posted this I didn't have a chance to visit the forum for a few days. When I return the internet is full of posts and news of this blog post. This is not my setup, I am a 5 boxer. I'm just a forum mod here that enjoys making blog posts. In fact as of right now I do not play World Of Warcraft. So please give the right man credit for his work which is Prepared the man behind the machines. Keep us posted Prepared on your progress.

Xzin Edit: Welcome Digg, Kotaku, Crunchgear, Gizmodo, Gameriot, Joystiq, etc. For clarification, Brad IS NOT the same person as Prepared. He just made the post. I continue to be dismayed by the comments that some people make towards multiboxing. We are all here to have fun and some people choose to have fun in their own ways. It doesn't mean they live in their basement or have no life. I fully respect the amount of effort he and many others have put into their hobbies. I ask that you appreciate what Prepared is doing and understand the amount of work is takes to do what he does to be non trivial. Unconventional? Sure. But where would we be if everybody was exactly the same? The bitter irony is that many of the crude and negative comments are being made by fellow gamers. Kind of sad, really. I thought gaming was becoming more mainstream and accepted.

This is not the first time this site has hosted large numbers of WoW accounts being played at once (Gameslah's 50 Boxing Setup ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=498')). Prepared has taken it to a completely new level though.

A lot have asked me, why create so many? The main reason is to invade Stormwind and Ironforge when they reach top level. I'm sure the Alliance will put up a big fight when that happens. We'll see how it goes. If they don't make level 70 before Wrath of the Lich King, then it will be at level 80. That is my main goal. That will probably happen after I've got some PvP gear from the battlegrounds. I'm also planning to do some 25 and 10 man raid instances but that is secondary to my PvP goal. Of course I'll be doing arenas too to build up PvP gear but I'm not expecting to do that great there because I'm way behind in gear right now. I need to get to level 70 first, then level 80 and by then I will probably have all green gear while most others have been doing the battlegrounds and arenas.

It costs me exactly $5711 in subscription costs per year with 36 accounts on the 6 month pay schedule. Not bad considering I'm looking at it like it's a hobby and there are more expensive hobbies out there than World of Warcraft. :)

32 of my shaman are level 61. One shaman that I had before I started the 32 is at level 70 along with 8 other level 70 classes that I had. My mage, priest and druid are in the center of the circle of shaman in the pictures but they are kind of hard to see. I've also got some mages and priests that I'm currently working on that are level 23. Once they are at level 31.9, I will stop working on them, get 16 of them to level 60 with the recruit-a-friend bonus levels and work on the shaman again.

When Wrath of the Lich King is released, I plan to be at the store when it opens and will purchase 36 copies of it. With tax, it should be about $1500 for all of them. Then the shaman are on their way to level 80 along with the priest, druid and mage.

By the way, I have 9 level 80 shaman created on the Murmur PvP realm in the Wrath of the Lich King beta. I mainly tried it out to see how well my computers would work as they are. With the exception of one my desktop computers, I should be fine with the hardware that I have.

I use 3 addons in the game. CT_MapMod is used to give me locations for quests, etc. ClassIcons is another addon that I use to show the class of the target. It helps for PvP encounters. Then the last addon I use is SSPVP2 which is excellent for displaying timers and other things while in the battlegrounds.

For my keys to send to all instances of WoW on my 11 computers, I use Octopus 1.3.2. Maximizer in Octopus allows me to start up all WoW instances at the same time or any individual instance such as if a WoW instance has crashed. It also allows me to shutdown all of the computers at the same time.

Here is a picture of my computer set up:

http://www.bradster.net/36box2.jpg

Not shown to the right is another laptop which runs 3 copies that I just moved there. The keyboard on the right was moved to the top shelf there as I don't really use that keyboard while playing. I have macros that set my main assist/cast/follow. Any of the eight screens to the front can be set to main assist/cast/follow as my mouse scrolls to them all using Octopus.

Sorry about the links, it's doing that for me too. They work some times however for me. Hoping Prepared is prepared and has another link to use :)

Speaking of Prepared. Dude, all I want is a a clip of you casting chain lightning x36 on a single player. That would be so damn funny, would be the "BEST" video ever. Please for the love of god record something for us :)

Also in our conversation you mentioned youtube. They have a time limit, I made my videos to meet the size limit (under 100mb) however if you check your submitted files it normally shows you the status and why it wasn't approve. Mine have always been length, which is why I never post any of my videos in youtube. I figure if they want to be that anal about it its not worth my time breaking up a single movie in 4 parts.

do you have a freaking DS3 connection supplying bandwidth to those puppies?! Jeez... i couldnt imagine the latency for 36 toons running around.

Xzin
10-07-2008, 01:47 AM
Actually, I have tested this and WoW is not very much of a bandwidth hog like most people think it is. Remember, you can play WoW on a 56k modem. Obviously you can do 5 and 10 accounts over the same DSL/Cable connection. Eventually, yes you do run out but mostly due to upload bandwidth - and that can (like most things) be worked around to a certain degree.

I have managed something like 30 accounts on a 1.5 meg upload DSL connection just to see how far it would go. Around 25 it started to lag and 32+ was unplayable. 1.5 meg is 1500 kbps theoretical or 26 56k modem connections. It is only about 150 KBps actual (factor in TCP/IP overhead, etc) but again, WoW doesn't need too much to be *playable*.

Sorry to go OT a little but this comment made me think. It'd be interesting to see what effect the Killer NICs would have on any issues with multiple data threads coming through the one connection. I had always thought they were overhyped a bit like the PhysX cards but after reading an article on TH about it I am thinking it might be something worth trying. Would likely become cost prohibitive on a 9 comp setup and obviously no way to install on the lappies (unless you can get a PCI through PCExpress dock) but interesting nonetheless.

BW~Merlin
10-07-2008, 07:25 AM
My bet would be under these conditions there would be an improvement in system performance as the Killer NIC has an on board processor so it would take load off the CPU.

I can't believe you did the collect quest in HFP for the shields for all of them. I thought I was gonna kill myself just doing it 3 times. UGH! WoW that is amazing :)

I am always excited to see people pushing the limits and trying new things
But I have to wonder...

How much is too much?

Law of Diminishing Returns
law of diminishing returns in economics, law stating that if one factor of production is increased while the others remain constant, the overall returns will relatively decrease after a certain point. Thus, for example, if more and more laborers are added to harvest a wheat field, at some point each additional laborer will add relatively less output than his predecessor did, simply because he has less and less of the fixed amount of land to work with.
Conversely, producing one more unit of output costs more and more in variable inputs. This concept is also known as the law of increasing relative cost.

His goal is to raid Stormwind or ironforge sounds cool, but what about lag, what about rezzing after a single mage kills 20 of you in 10 secs? Is the goal worth the costs that is all I am asking?

I'm not trying to be negative, I'll be cheering you on prepared. I hope you get everything you want and have fun doing it, the way you want to do it. I just think the gap between possible and probable is too large... we are not just talking about few problems to resolve, we are talking about you breaking through reinforced concrete walls. I think it will be rather ingenious the way you over come these walls. you might discover something that will help all of us out. Anyways GL.

P.S. The first video I would want to see is just mobs running into his searing totems...

I'm just glad you aren't in my Battle Group. :)

Actually there are more people doing this running 10+ accounts. On our battle group my brother and I have been smoked by 15 mage boxer just owning up AV and lots of 5 boxers. Since RAF it's simple to level toons to 60 and boxing is becoming very popular. I myself am building 10 man group for doing kara and the new 10man raids come WOLTK.

IMO Boxing should be PvE Focused because if we keep pushing into PvP blizz will ban us. Blizzard mentality is it's fine as long as you don't effect others. Once we start making it no longer fun for other gamers and they continue to complain. Blizzard will change their stance and make boxing agenst the EULA. Plus we have to use 3rd party software for it to work unless you plan on going back to the old days.

But still sick you are running 30+ accounts. Grats :)

Have you thought about outdoor raid bosses once you hit 80? I know you can't farm them due to their long respawn and it'd take forever, but you could get a couple of pieces of gear from them. I think you'd have a great advantage with the outdoor raid bosses since you can bring all of your characters to the party.

Pretty crazy setup. Once you get them to 80, you need a huge group of something noone would expect... like 36 holy priests charging into a city killing people.

And.... is your job hiring?

Best Pic ever seen here!
Is it just me or are we progressing in a speed that was not expected. Even after RAF hit us. I started "dual", then quickly upgraded to 3, then to 5 accounts. Now, maxing out the first RAF-Term, i already plan my second. Will upgrade to 10-Man in the near future. And i don't think i am the only one!
The mind adjusts quickly to the new gained power - M'Boxer will own!

On a sidenote:
Do you get a lot of flaming when u buff up in org like that? Ever been contacted by a gm? Has your style of playing ever been discussed with a gm? I think it will raise many questions. I think that because a person that is not aware of multiboxing will think that this is some sort of ingame event and ask a gm about that.

Keep up the good work, and go catch some air some times, wow/life-balance :)

Expensive is a very 'relative' word :-) maybe prepared won $45 million on the lottery, or maybe he just won 6k and thought it would be a cool way to spend it hehe

TBH I dont dual or multibox a lot, I have the setup but since I have kiddoes by my side day and night I barely keep up raiding with my Pallieboy. BUT I do read these forums and others religiously since I think multiboxing is friggin awesome and inspiring. What I do hate is all the people flaming multiboxers for the money they spend on their rigs accounts etc. To put it all in perspective... I have a regular industrial job, house, mortgages and I am a single full time parent :D ... one kiddoe plays golf AND tennis and the cost so far (hes 6 years old) is for the first season almost hitting 4k US dolares. It will prolly go down to 3k next year. The other one play soccer, tabletennis and hockey (8 years old) and he takes me for some money to each year :).

I have friends playin golf and spending insane amounts of money and my uncles friggin sailboat (he goes out with it like 5 times a year) skins him for the same amount of money that "the public" flames multiboxers for spending.

Catch my drift, u probably most of u in here do, but hey at least I got that out of MY system :)

Jona

Oh it's clear enough,
the media isn't getting their facts straight,
in stead of decently reading about what they are about to spread they rather spread it right away to get attention (viewers on their site).

heh, and we worry about kids in-game :P

(A tv-show clown did about the same in the Netherlands only weeks ago,
somehow they spread the rumour he made some girl pregnant which wasn't his wife and in no time the whole media jumped on it,
a few days later it seemed it was all a stunt for an advert :p
Gossip magazines were complaining their selling numbers would be low,
because who would buy a magazine if you already know the frontpage news is fake.

Interesting setup you have Prepared. What kind of Laptops AMD/Intel? Curious about min CPU and MAX CPU used?
Do you throttle all the CPU's for the same speed to maintain stability over your LAN?
A few folks have mentioned your ISP speeds, I am in California as well currently I have 3.0 down just got a Verizon offer for 7.1
However I know as a FIOS subscriber you may have as much as 15 down.I know a few guys that have T1 & T3 connections at their homes.

Playing 36, that is intense! WTG! I would probably go blind or perhaps run amok if I ever tried that.

Now for the other reason I registered here, other then to give Prepared a virtual HIGH FIVE!

For the folks commenting on the money Prepared spent exercising his beloved hobby and where he gets it, that's way out of bounds and affects none of you personally in any way shape or form.
I know you aren't all adults here but you should at least strive to give the appearance that you are well mannered considering the manner of forum that exists here.
Jealously becomes no one.

Hey Prepared please post a list of your complete gaming setup. I have never seen anything that can handle the gaming flow you are outputing.

Ive spend many years on the internet. Ive come across many weird things for eg. two girls and 1 cup. Rick rolling and even NsX_nick. But your nerdyness takes the cake. Some people choose to spend their money on cars, some on investment properties but you choose to spend your days and nights in a dark heated room with 11 computers attemping to take over the world of warcraft. I hope to see your name on the Guinness world of record 2009 because you deserve it. Your gonna look back at this in 10 years time having lost thousands of dollars and many thousands of hours , is it worth it? I think you should join of the 40 hour famine. Where people sacrifice their daily meals BUT have access to electronic goods for 40 hours. At least that way your doing this other people and you have the excuse.

P.S Your a nerd who gets worshiped by fellow nerds.

Thank you for your wonderful compliments! Very appreciated. However, my room is very cool. So cool in fact, when a friend came over recently, he put on a jacket because he said it was 'freezing in here'. With winter arriving, I don't need to run my air conditioner either. The window fan works just fine. :)

Yea it would be cool to be in the Guiness Book of World Records 2009 as the player boxing the most characters in the World! (of Warcraft)... However, once that happened, some CEO would spend his millions to surpass the amount I have currently just to get into the world record book and then I'd have to spend my CEO millions to do the same to surpass him.

Yes, it is worth it to me. I'd rather be here spending the amount I'm spending now on something I enjoy doing than spending it something that I don't enjoy doing... What would you rather be? The worshipped or the worshipper? It all depends on who is doing what and to whom...
And now that I'm at 44 accounts, it's $6858.72 in total for the entire year in subscription costs. For the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, it will be about $1900 with tax.

Let's see now, I can't buy a brand new car for that amount these days.... I can buy a brand new motorcycle for that, but then I'd be in the minority on the roads in California and be at a substantial risk of life... Other things I can spend the money on? Hmm, I can think of lots of things, but I choose World of Warcraft because I enjoy playing the game. To some, it could be considered nerdy, to me, it's just relaxing in the comfort of my home enjoying the company of many others that I've never met nor probably will ever meet. Paying to play in a virtual world where a virtual economy affects the virtual pockets of the virtual players in it. What a concept!

Yes! Octopus is a champion for my configuration. It correctly starts up all 36 WoW instances on 11 PC's and shuts down all 10 client PCs when I'm done for the day. The list of the instances scrolls so I can get to any of them if I need to start up a single instance. I'm going to be moving to 44 boxed characters in total soon so will be putting it to the test even more-so. Very rarely Octopus gets confused with which is the active session. That might be like once every 20 hours of playing or so. Just have to get the mouse pointer back to the main computer and toggle bypass and it's fixed.

Long time I don't come here.

And well! Going to 1st page of the most visited page on the World (according to alexa.com Yahoo is the 1st) is something to remember!
Does anyone have to link for the article on Yahoo?

hehe I posted in a lot of these sites in favor of Prepared, I can't stand those flamers saying "No Life", while they are in a gaming site and have thousands of comments in all posts. Ends they are more non lifer spending that time in a forum.
And another case I think this is just jealousy, as he can spend this in a game, and most persons can't. :D

EDITED: ops, a google search took me to it.

He was not prepared for the wind and his privates started to wither. The Craft Grunde boxer-briefs were amazing . One young, loud, talented boxer by the name of Cassius Clay won the Boxing World heavyweight championship from Sonny Liston. We are partnering with charities and governments around the world to provide some craft ideas seem like a good idea but once done are a disaste.

Guess I'm the only player here that has run across this back stabbing scum ball. For his pvp points he either runs around ganking other players, at 64 he one hits 70's, or like last night he camped nessingwary's for over two hours, preventing any other player from turning in any quests. I don't mind you having fun with your 36 accounts, but when you take advantage of it to shut down the play of others you've gone to far. Other players attack you first, kill them, but for you to run around a gank them from behind then camp them. Your a scumball.

If i may ask, Prepared, What are the specs of your laptops and where did you get them? :P

Most of my laptops are Fujitsu N6460's from Fry's Electronics. They came with 2gb of ram, but I added more to make them all 3gb. They each have Duo Core 2 Pentiums at 2.00ghz. Also comes with the ATI Radeo HD 2600. Those run 4 copies of WoW each with no lag with all of the graphics turned down. Also have 2 HP Pavilion DV9740us with 3gb of ram each. Those have the nVidia GeFOrce 8600M GS with 512mb of ram. Those run 3 copies of WoW each with no lag.

Looks like I'll be staying with 40 accounts instead of moving to 60. There is a limit to the number of accounts one can play it appears. Not a limit in the game but it's unplayable at about 45 accounts on the same network. I've tried two different routers and I have the fastest Internet available from Comcast cable. I don't get any lag in the game. Most of the time, the latency in the game is between 50 ms and 125 ms on all of the instances. What happens is that when an opposing team casts Fire Rain, Blizzard and Hurricane at the same time, all instances become disconnected. It might really be a bug in the game or something not easily duplicatable. It's an instant disconnect the moment the first blizzard or hurrican or fire rain is seen, not a stop in place then disconnect later. However, I've done all of the suggestions on the Blizzard support forums including upgrading my routers firmware, and making the adjustment to turn off the Offload settings in the network card advanced configuration. Nothing works. The other reason I'm going to stay with 40 is because full raid size seems to be the best. For example, I can use my paladin's Crusader Aura and it will hit everyone in the raid. I have two paladins, but one of them is only level 61 so far. With a full raid, I have all of my buffs available and it just seems like this is the number that my computers can handle the best without any lag or disconnects.

Looks like you hit Blizzes flood limit controls. If a single character sends too much data at once, it boots em to protect the server. It is possible every character gets the boot because it severs the entire connection from your IP? I had this problem for a while when I had so many addons all sending data to hidden chat channels (which was a poor way to do it). I also had this problem when I 40 boxed trial accounts (although I was running out of upload bandwidth too).

I always wondered about the DC issue. I've had it happen a few times where 2 or 3 of my toons will suddenly DC, while the others are just fine.

Thanks for the tip! That is a good place to go and gank. Much appreciated.

I've seen this with a mere 5 shammies trying to do the Leroy Jenkins achievement. 5x thunderstorm on 20-odd dragon whelps yielded an instant disconnect for all 5 of my accounts. I could probably get away with it if I sequenced their casts but I didn't try that yet.

A friend of mine in the raid with me (he was two-boxing, 7 toons in raid total) did not get disconnected. He got to participate in the wipe tho :(

I think that just because he has 44 accounts doesn't mean he sits in a dark heated room playing all day does it? No, it doesn't he could spend all his time in a Gym and come home tired to spend an hour mellowing out in-front of 11 monitors and kicking some ass on 44 Orc shammies so you can shut it and get out ... it is outstanding that you called your account -amazingwowplaya-, it is pathetic and probably untrue. I have a few decent (ish) characters and i know that some people obviously spend their lives on WoW, i am one of the most addicted WoW layers in my school and i have spent a few all-nighters on WoW to get some vital levels that is, in-fact, the only time i have EVER played wow in the dark.
