View Full Version : How much hostility should I expect to face?

I want to multi box as the next challenge as well as the fun of being able to 5 man instances all by myself. I really don't want constant grief from players, or being reported 5 times a day or havnig to talk to one ignorant GM after another that does not know thier own company's policies.

So my questions:

1. Do you attempt to "hide" multi-boxing? Run from instance to instance and hope people don't see? Never go into a city as a group? etc?

2. How often do you get hate whispers?

3. How often do you get reported?

3. How often do you get reported?1. Ahahaha no. I'm loud and I'm proud (cheesy) but yeah I go where I want and do what I like. I have found however that as you get higher in levels, you get less negative comments (could just be my server)

2. On my mains, like once every 30 days? Unless I do something to annoy someone.

3. Probly a lot I guess. I have yet to talk to a single GM since I've started boxing.

1) I certainly don't try to hide. I play for fun, and hiding is not fun for me.
In fact, quite the opposite. Ganking some seventies with my lower-level shamans seems to be quite relaxing after a long day.

2) Putting unpleasant people on ignore Makes bg very pleasant. I do not remember getting hate whispers, mostly whispers are people talking in an open chat - general or bg. I get the most hate in bgs, but during the first minute or two of bg, I put anyone who seems to be cursing or otherwise talking trash to anyone on ignore. Haven't had any problems so far.

3) probably a lot. Probably at least 5 or so times, but so far a GM has never bugged me, and I've never had to prove anything. I have read one or two reports here of folks having to put up with trash, but that is usually something else.

1.If you aren't able to deal with QQ definitely stay away from other players.
2. Not often
3. Hard to tell. GMs don't really bother with boxers anymore. As long as you are playing within the Terms of service you should have no problems. Having all your accounts in the same name is fairly important, if not I wouldn't box them.

1. Never, I'm loud and proud about MBing. I spout the wiki all the time.

2. Hate whispers? Once a week. Curiosity and "hold my hand and tell me how to do each and every step so I can do it too including teaching me how to set up a WoW account"? Every day, usually twice a day.

3. Once per hate tell I would guess. This has never resulted in me talking to a GM yet, but I know thier eyes are on me, and I try to represent the MBing community in the best light possible.

Note that I haven't been boxing long, but this was what I discovered in my early (and worried) MBing. It is no problem atm.

1. I avoid undercity because it is a bitch to move through with 5 toons.

2. I've really only had two hate tells in three months of boxing. I've also had one semi-hate tell where the person asked me if I was cheating. I told him/her if they thought I was cheating to contact a GM and ask. The conversation turned into a positive one, with me directing them to this site, and a thanks for the info.

3. The only way to really know if you've been reported is if you get a whisper from a GM or a letter via email. Haven't had either. The two Hate tells said they were reporting me but people say that all the time. I have had one conversation with a GM and that was because I "reported" myself. I let the GM know that I was boxing on my server, that all the accounts belonged to me, I was behind each keystroke, and I would be using all characters rolled. His/her exact words were, "thanks for the heads up," and he went away leaving me with a survey.

If hate is an issue for you, turn your chats / and chat bubbles off...at least for the time you are in major cities or in BG's. If someone pesters you, report them. What you are doing is legit. You have some asshats out there that think they know the rules. Arguing with them rarely works, because nobody likes to think they are wrong (see the numerous "ban multiboxing" threads in the WoW forums). I saw somewhere on this forum, and would love to give credit but I can't remember who said it, but that person said something like, "don't let others dictate how much fun you have." That changed my perspective. I hope you have fun.

1. Do you attempt to "hide" multi-boxing? Run from instance to instance and hope people don't see? Never go into a city as a group? etc?
Never. Why woud i? Its legal, fun and..fun.
2. How often do you get hate whispers?

Each day, depending on how mutch i play, and where i am ofc.
3. How often do you get reported?

How woud i know? Never god a GM whisper about it, but then again, i think they stopped with that long time ago. But yes, people whisper 'reported' quite often.

If you're at all worried about it (and just not wanting to deal with crap is, I think, a valid worry), and you want to PvE, allow me to suggest Lightbringer Horde! Lightbringer is not a multiboxer-heavy server, but it is a very multiboxer-friendly one. The worst I've ever gotten is one dude who wanted to inform me -- very politely, if incorrectly -- that multiboxing was against the ToS. I told him that Blizzard has explicitly cleared multiboxing as OK, and he said he didn't know that but was happy to hear it. That's my horror story. Lightbringer Horde is Pleasantville for multiboxers. :)

It does vary server to server. So perhaps stick with one of those recommended.

1. I never hide the fact I'm multiboxing. I feel that if i did it would be a small victory for those mindless morons who just can't grasp the fact that it is within ToS.

2. Hate whispers rarely. So rare I can hardly remember it. I've been spat on by alliance (but then again that's happened when i've not been multiboxing), and I have had 2 instances that I could attribute to hatred of my multiboxing, but could just as equally be alliance hating horde :) one of which was inventive ways of killing a non pvp flagged character on a non pvp server so i did actually have to admire them.

3. Reports I've had one person tell me they were reporting me - then it turned out that they were joking and we spoke for a bit. I dare say I've been reported, and have never spoken to a GM.

1. Do you attempt to "hide" multi-boxing? Run from instance to instance and hope people don't see? Never go into a city as a group? etc?

Nope, I don't try to hide. I just live my life like I used to do it with one and two characters (interestingly, it looks like no one never noticed I was dual-boxing, when I did it for several years).

2. How often do you get hate whispers?

What I get most would be the french equivalent of "lolwtf". These usually don't say anything else and continue running/jumping around. I also get some genuine curiosity, "how do you do that" (I refer them to this site), "what's the point", "do you sell your characters afterwards", things like that. A couple of times some players explained me that even though they knew it was legal, they considered what I was doing was "bad" because "unfair". I had a nice chat with them, and even though I didn't manage to convince them, there was at least no animosity.

I never got a hate whisper, in fact.

3. How often do you get reported?

I don't know. I was never in contact with a GM about my multi-boxing, so either I was never reported, or I was but GMs know I'm not doing anything against the TOS.

About my server : it a medium population RP/PVP server. From what I know, I seem to be the only 5-boxer on it.

Heck no, I am proud to be a multiboxer. I jump in Orgrimmar all around so players say 'wtf?' or 'haxor' or 'what the hell is going on?' Playing on PvP realm, I kill everyone I see during my leveling up. I leave no one left standing. It might not be good for the opposing side but hey, all on my realm chose to play PvP :)

2. How often do you get hate whispers?

Just about every other day. Usually it's a friend of the player that I killed or it's their alternate account that they play on both sides with. Sometimes it's from players on my side of the faction that just don't like it when they see a bunch of shamans running together.

3. How often do you get reported?

Got no idea on this one. I would guess probably every day and sometimes maybe two or three times a day. Running around with 36 accounts killing the opposite faction left and right, I know I'm getting reported a HECK of a LOT! But I wouldn't really know for sure as I've never been contacted by a GM for anything.

1. Do you attempt to "hide" multi-boxing? Run from instance to instance and hope people don't see? Never go into a city as a group? etc?

2. How often do you get hate whispers?

3. How often do you get reported?1. Never, why would I hide the fact I multiboxing. I mainly tri-box (tank healer and dps), and join LFG etc.. to find the extra dps at times if needed.

2. Hate usually comes in the form of general channel, not whispers, and its uncommon. And the higher in level you get, the less it happens... If your horde in barrens, expect a constant stream :P I find it amusing.
I get 10 times the hate whispers on my twink than I ever have multiboxing, even in BG's. Constantly have people making lvl 1's on my server to abuse my twink, never had that when multiboxing.

3. Can't answer that, as I have never had a GM contact me, but I have had whispers and comments in general that 'you have been reported for botting/hacking'. I'd say not more than once every couple days pre lvl 30, and not seen it since.

I have only started serious tri-boxing, and occasional 5 box, but for years (pre-bc) I have been dual boxing melee+ranged, and dual boxing seems to go greatly ignored in comparison.

Hmmm, on a daily basis atleast. Last night a guy called me "a pathethic multiboxing piece of shit"

3. How often do you get reported?
Probably alot from ignoranuses.

Not much use in PVE, but for PVP having names not starting in the same way helps alot. My chars are named Penotes Denotes Venotes and so on. When I enter a BG, no one will notice me. Most of the time they see me when 4 of my chars are already nr 1 2 3 4 in healing done so people can see I'm not just filling up spots in the raid, as I really add something to the fights.

And don't hide. Showing off in city's is a big part of the fun after doing an instance 8)

Nein! I do chain heal stars in main cities whenever I can for the attention whoring.
The only time I leave my slaves outside of a city is if I know there's going to be mega lag.

2. How often do you get hate whispers?
I've had 2 in the month and a halfish I've been boxing. One apologised a little later after a chat.

3. How often do you get reported?
Wouldn't know. GM's never spoken to me about it.

I don't get too much hate. It's there but it isn't spammed or anything. More wtfs/questions.

I haven't spoken to a gm on the issue ever. I've been told that I've been reported several times though. I usually just "/r ty" and move on.

2. How often do you get hate whispers?

3. How often do you get reported?

1. Nope, no point in hiding because I'm not doing anything illegal. If I were on a pvp server, I'd probably hide about 10-15 shamans in a boomkin. :D

2. Ravencrest US & Silvermoon US have been pretty cool about it. I've only gotten about 5 hate tells combined on both servers while leveling 2 groups to 60 and 3 other groups to 30-40 range. Lots of cheers, people who do /follow on my leader.

3. Two people have told me they reported me and hope I enjoy my time off, I've never spoken to a gm. Well, there was this one time I spoke with a gm after I thought I sold my T4 shoulders while clearing my bags, but that's not what you're asking about.

Lol, I make totem-forests and chain heal pentagrams in Orgrimmar. A lot of people who have started to recognize me always yell 'make a star' or something like that. Plenty of /cheers too.

2. How often do you get hate whispers?

Not since hitting 70, or not as much. Still get the occasional /spit and /rude. Mainly those are from Alliance that I've recently one-shotted.

3. How often do you get reported?

Never that I know of.

1) I don't try to hide. I used to get a kick out of trying to seem as 'normal' as possible but now I find I just don't have the patience for it. My main group is orc and troll shamans, druid and paladin. I'm not into the clone thing so much, I like mixed groups (race and appearance), so I probably don't get many second glances from most players, only those who are fairly observant or know what to look for.

2) None so far. Then again, I don't pvp, my rig isn't really up for it. The extent of the whispers I've received are usually along the lines of 'Multiboxing?' to which I reply yes and then either I get no reply or a 'cool'.

3) No reports that I'm aware of.

I don't hide in fact quite the opposite.

The have gotten a lot of "cool" and one time I hit demon armor in an inn on all 5 of my locks and a guy said "That was gay" and then logged. I was pretty crushed by his braveness. :)

I have not spoken to a GM yet but I was having problems making my acocunts and called in the billing guy was very confused on why I was making 4 new accounts to play at the same time. lol

I don't hide it but I don't try to show off.Lol, I fail at the second part there,
but i can't help it, people ask me to show off occasionally.
Usually it's something quick like one star chain or the barov trinkets and I go on with my business.
I'm paying Blizzard to entertain me, not the other way around O.o

At first I had the fear of getting a huge amount of whispers, but it's not that bad,
I'm getting a lot of whispers, but most of them are just interested in how it's going and if i had any upgrades lately.
And the "I started running with 2/3/4/5 toons aswell.. You were right, it's great :D" offcourse ;)

Up untill lvl 60 people shouldnt be seeing you to much anyway, rushing from quest to quest (or instance) to get them up in level in zones people hardly use.
When you are going over 60 people already start respecting what you're doing and are mainly interested.

(/w's from kids are not covered by my post :pinch:)

and then logged.
This always makes me lol

2. How often do you get hate whispers?

3. How often do you get reported?1. Never. Absolutely never.
2. Rarely. Normally people try to abuse in public, I let them know they are idiots, most the folks in /1 agree, etc...
3. I've talked to GM's about other items, it's always been wen I petition... the best was when a guy was trying to outtag me this weekend, I play on a PVE server so PVP isn't always an option, I tried flagging and the guy wouldn't bite... I petitioned and while I was waiting he attacked me on accident (ok, so I /dueled and /yielded him... he kept attacking and flagged, welcome to 5v1 instead of 1(@66) vs 1(@70)... he waited out hsi flag before respawning, then went back to trying to outtag me... two pulls later he accidently attacked me instead of the mob, and died horribly for it....

The GM talked to me and I told him what was up and that the PVP solution was not being effective because the guy keeps coming back unflagged... but that he had attacked me a few times, the GM responded "not very smart to attack a guy with his own personal army behind him"...

Anyhow, the jackass managed to tag 3 more mobs while the GM was talking to me, then the behavior stopped... I can only imagine he got a chat from the GM.

Teens by the nature of hormones are almot always looking to vent hostility - being a multi-character /follow group has often allowed the minority of the gaming community to direct an unwise message.

4 years in Ultima Online - only friendly comments relating to dragon or hellhound pack demolition teams in PVP or dungeon areas

8 years in Everquest with a non software-hardware command options, a phat zero negative comments

(I never allowed a bot to take a player raid spot or loot prior to other group members)

2 plus years of Wow and only recently have the comments started to escalate - I have a starndard /r response comment pre typed to advise a player what action they should follow, rather then enter into a potential harrasment message.

I did have one comment that crossed the borders of rasicm that prompted me to forward a comment to blizzard

The rewards of playing when and how you want far outweigh any potential negative aspects of multi account gaming.

Play nice and endevour not to gank quest areas, pk blindly or camp graveyards you should do very well

Have fun - TRB

1. I never hide, but I do park the slaves outside cities to avoid lag at peak times if they arnet needed.

2. Vey few at first, and none since I came to Mag. I get alot of /w asking how I do it and I send them here. I also make sure that I kill everything I go by that another player has already tagged. It doesn't take any time and it helps spread a little boxing luv out there.

3. Im sure I have been reported at some time, but I have never had a GM contact me for anything.

2. I may have gotten two...ever.

3. Not certain, to my knowledge never. I've not spoken to a GM since I started multiboxing.

I do on occasion notice a few alliance (I'm horde) toons saying "LOL" (the converted text) and follow me around for a moment when I'm doing dailies. I'm guessing less because of the pack of toons wandering together than seeing the mass of spells launching at the mobs, and them dropping so fast.

I don't PvP much (pretty much hate it), so I haven't seen much if any hate from that.

I got more confusion at low levels, probably due to new players who don't understand anything.

I don't try to hide it, how can I? I often forget I'm doing anything weird. But I don't try to show it off either. I just play.

I never get many hate tells. Most people who talk to me want to chat about how cool it is that I could clear an instance with them.

Don't try to level outside of instances... at least on my server. I was in tanaris last night and some ftard season 1 wellfared out hunter killed my shamans 3 times in a row. there is no reason to hide unless the accounts you are playing are not your own. Never play someone elses account, it's against the rules.
I used to be afraid of getting report just like you but I have long since got over it.
I've had people claim to have reported me hundreds of times but I've never talked to a GM about it ( at least a GM has never approached me about any of these reports )

One guy in our guild actually had a GM approach him and talk to him because he was reported AFK in the A/V while he was trying to complete the quests for there, like capture a mine, etc.
there is going to be some hate out there, just "/ingore dueche" and continue on.

1. Nope, I don't hide. I don't have a 70 to boost yet, so my characters level via questing. And in cities I usually put my slaves on /dance in the AH, just because I think it is silly and cute.

2. I have received no hate whispers yet. Since I only triple box, and my two /follow characters are clones, maybe it isn't as obvious what I'm doing. One time I grouped with a guy who didn't realize there were four people in the group until he noticed the number of character icon pictures! I do get whispers, though. Lots of "u boxin?" and "omg, u mulitbox, can u halp me w/quest, plz plz plz?" I play PVE; I'm sure PVP servers will have a LOT more hostility, but even on PVE you are very visible to the community, which isn't necessarily great if you're a wallflower.

3. Never that I know of, but again, this is probably worse on PVP servers.

3. Not that I know of.

I find it beneficial to be a little nicer than normal - I'm working on a 4 box group and any time I'm working on a group quest or kill quest I always invite anyone else I see doing it. If you're going to totally destory an area most are happy if you help them get their quest done in the process :)

2. I had one guy call me every name under the sun and tell me 'To get of my server' which I thought funny since I have been there since beta. He then accosted another team later that month with the same abuse so may well be a nut job.

3. Haven't spoken to a GM. have had plenty of 'Reported'. One guy insisted I would be banned and I made him promise to come apologise if i was still around the next week. surprisingly none has arrived :)

Like previous replies I try and be as nice as pie to other players and dont just decimate an area when they are also questing. I also help when I can. so far so good.
