View Full Version : New to Dual-Boxing... Any Resolved Looting Options (Quest Items)

I'm using Keyclone and I'm just dual-boxing (WoW) since the Recruit a Friend... getting some characters I would like to have to 60+ without wanting to have taken the effort of leveling them without the benefits. The Tri-XP is fantastic.
So far I've gathered a great deal of information from this site and its a fantastic resource.
I did an extensive search throughout the forums, about looting and I know there is no macro and there are a few suggestions. But I've not found any real solution short of manually looting for quest items on the alt.
Has any solution ever been come across to make looting for quest items a little more easy? I'm using Keyclone and the Maximizer now, but sometimes mousing over the alt screen causes awkward things and it becomes a large time sink over periods when trying to do this for quest items.

Secondly, the biggest problem I face in dual-boxing is "Target needs to be in front of you". I was curious if there are any details about improving this. I've seen some videos of 5 Boxers where they aren't following the Main so much as they are running within him then a formation macro spreads them out side by side. I've never been able to achieve anything like this. In a situation where there is only 1 main and 1 alt, do you have any suggestions?

I don't think there's any easy solution.
I use the Focusless, Leaderless ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=11459')system which, in conjunction with Keyclone's PiP switching system, means I can easily switch leader, so I finish the collection on toon A, then make B the leader, finish the collection on B, then make C the leader, etc.
It's still a pain if you have to collect items with a low drop rate (e.g. those darn fetishes off the trolls in STV!), but if you're going to do a collection quest, this is a pretty good way to do it, IMO.

I read through the post... and whilst I don't need the hotstrings because I've only got 2 people going... I'd like to know how to do the following:
Another is for drop quests, I finish it on toonA, then PiP change to toonB and loot everything on him, etc. Aside from just mousing over the PiP and using this character... I'm trying to figure out if there is a special function that would allow me to actually shift PiPs so that when ToonA is active ToonB has to PiP and then vice versa. I've looked through Keyclone but I didn't find anything like that.

In the maximizer setup section in keyclone theres a field called PiP, click in that field and press the key you'd like to use to switch screens (make one for every screen you have...alot of people seem to prefer the F buttons). Go in to wow (I'm assuming your using focus to identify your main) and make a macro that sets focus on PiP one and another that does it for PiP2 and so on then bind the same PiP keys you used so when you press PiP#2 it will also set focus on your slave and vise versa.

For looting, you either zoom out and look down from a bird's eye view, or your zoom in and look at your leader's feet. lol. thats all i can think of.
as for your keyclone question on PiP switching, its on his website. it really is.
last word of advice... do NOT take quests that requires you to collect x of tihs or y of that. stick to the kill x of these and y of that and loot this boss' head. or burn these documents or rescue this lost spy or whatever. unless you know the "collect x this" quest will lead to a few better quests. sorry for broke sentences. need coffee.

Hell with my setup where any toon can be the leader of the hydra unless drop rates SUCK i actually do collection quests.

Thanks for all the help... the PiP switching seems ideal, i'm going to tinker with it today and see how effective it is, if it saves any time or not.
I'm not too hot with the macros, so i'll have to tinker to make the pip switch and the follow switch.
As far as skipping collection quests, its rather difficult, there seem to be 1000 more Get 10 of these type of quest than there are kill 10 of these. But I've leveled several many characters... i'm pretty keen on which ones totally suck :)
Thanks Again

with RAF you can skip virtually all the collection quests, there is enough XP to never bother doing any of them.
That said, if your monitor is big enough (or buy a 2nd monitor, its worth it esp for only an extra $200-300 for a nice 22") with just dual boxing you can arrange the screens side by side, and get PowerToys for Windows XP from microsoft (google it). You can turn on an option in PowerToys (under mouse) so that any window that you mouseover becomes active, so it just becomes a matter of moving the mouse, right clicking, and moving back.
There are ways of zooming in and broadcasting clicks (with Octopus or Keyclone) so that you can kind of try and click once and both windows get it, but tbh I've never really had it work well.
I 5 box and use Octopus, have F1-F5 bound to my 5 toons and they are all window stacked on top of each other, one is on the side since hes a herbalist. I have ingame macros which /focus <person> bound to F1-F5, and my F key is bound to /follow focus which I spam a lot, and so the way I do collection quests is just rotate between my party and each collects/kills as many as they need while they are the leader of the group. It switches instantly screens since they are all stacked, I found using maximizer/PIP and arranging windows so I could see them all just lagged my gfx too much.

I 4 box on a 22" monitor (will 5 box with my 70 boosting later) and I have a brady bunch layout, 1 large window and 3 screens at 600:450 resolution stacked along the right side. This makes the secondary windows large enough you can kind of see what you're doing there. Text is almost readable at that size.
In Keyclone you can activate focus follows mouse so when you mouse to that window it will activate.
So when I am running around, I run my main toon slightly past the dead mob so my following toons are in loot range of it, then right click in the smaller window on the sparkling corpse.
Slightly painstaking, but not too bad, and seeing the sparkles makes it easier to track which toons have or haven't completed the looting. nothing more annoying than realizing one of your toons has run back to the hand-in spot with 7/8.

My computer took an enormous hit... the video card, short of actually spitting flames burned up several things. So its on crutches and barely runs wow. I'll have to replace pretty much everything. But I can Tri-Box. So i'm going to be using my unlinked 70 pally to try and get some instances going with my 2 linked accounts. Just to break up the monotony... because I JUST leveled a mage and then a shaman and even with Tri-XP i'm really not feeling the re-questings :P
The Pip Switcher worked as I thought it would... but the best way to prevent serious GFX lag was to make the loot FFA and have 1 character do it and then switch and make the other character do it... basically swapping my group main. But its still a pain and I think i'm going to avoid collection quests altogether from this point on.
