View Full Version : WoTLK Beta memory/cpu graphics usage?

I've done a search in the forums about this and didn't find anything so posting here to ask.
For those of you multiboxing on the Wrath of the Lich King beta or even just running one copy of it, how does it compare to the Burning Crusade in terms of memory, cpu and graphics usage? I'm a little concerned that I may not be able to box 3 copies of WoW on my laptops when the Wrath of the Lich King is released. Right now with my configuration, I'm seeing about 150mb per WoW.exe in Windows Task Manager per process on my laptops. For my desktops, WoW.exe takes up about 300mb. Not sure exactly why that is, but was wondering for those of you running WoTLK beta, how does it compare in terms of the amount of memory that it takes? Are you able to run the same number of Wrath of the Lich King instances as you were for Burning Crusade? And is the graphics as smooth on both? I turn down all graphics settings to get the best performance with the numbers of copies that I run and am planning to do the same with Wrath of the Lich King but would like to know if anyone has to upgrade their hardware in order to run the same copies they had before.
Thanks,

From what I have seen wow beta runs better than in BC. You shouldn't have anything to worry about other than when you take flight paths.

What's special about the flight paths ?

Honestly, my wow beta client (2 builds ago, however) ran like SHIT. When it was minimized my whole pc was lagging. The single copy used more than 400mb ram (no addons, current main wow instance uses 270mb) and the cpu used ranged between 30-40% while my main active instances uses 20-25% at the moment.
This worries me, to be honest. I'm hoping this is because of the beta client that still needs to be polished etc...

400MB is fine with me. BC WoW takes up to 500MB-700MB per client when I'm in Shattrath, although it generally is more close to 500MB.

30-40% on what kind of CPU? Are you talking about 1 core or multiple ones?
My current BC WoW takes about 50%-65% of 1 core on a 2.66GHz quad-core system.
[edit] Also: Do you experience a higher framerate(fps) in the beta WoW when the client isn't minimized? Higher FPS comes with higher CPU usage(because there are more 'representation updates' for the game).

I can handle 5x400MB, just wanted to point out that going from 250MB->400MB was a pretty huge increase for me. In shattrah my RAM usage/client spikes up to 400-500, but when I'm doing quests/grinding instances it's stable at 240-250. I'm not sure how you get 500MB/client when not in Shattrah.
As for the CPU, I just used ctrl+alt+deleted to look at the cpu usage in the processes table. I currently run 5xBC at 45-55% cpu usage (running BF) while 1 WoTLK beta used 35-40%. I'm on an Intel Dual Core E8200 fwiw.
Don't have the beta client updated anymore at the moment though, the lag made it unplayable and i cant be arsed to download more patches. :)

for some ppl in beta, theres a video setting that, when it set to full it actually is set to lowest. i can't recall wich setting it is, but i clearly see less detail on my screen when playing, and tbh i got so tired of the lag, that i only saw sw harbor and the harbor at northrend. i went to kill some mobs to test thunderstorm, and that was it.
just saying this, because u might be telling it runs smoother with everything on high, when in fact theres a bugged option setting it to lower.

Just wondering ,are you running multi core processors, and if you are ,are you setting the affinitys for each core to a separate game?
I run with a ASUS quad core/crossfire video system , an run 4-5 WoWs open on a single PC,setting each game to a separate core,if 5 games I allot 2 games to one core,in Shatt I run 13-20 fps ,if I forget to set affinitys it takes about 10 secs in game to realize the error of not doing this .
BTW im not running Beta yet....

So far I haven't noticed it using more juice unless I used the command /console extShadowQuality 0-6 and bumped the shadows up to 4. Looks awesome, deffinenetly uses juice. Settings 5 and 6 are for testing as I understand it. Using either 5 or 6 caused my wow to crash.

Are those folks who are saying beta runs better than BC running all the exact same addons? If not, then it's an invalid comparison.
