View Full Version : Webhosting SUggestions?
Any suggestions of a good moderately priced webhost since I have to move my wallpapers site because Virgin Media are being arsehats.
I need the following:
PHP5
SQL
a lot of webspace.
would prefer a yearly payment plan.
Thanks in advance

I'd stay away from the "Unlimited Space/Transfer" hosts, as you'll never actually get that, even the ones that offer terabytes of storage on the cheap are just overselling by a huge margin. Don't sacrifice support and network/hardware quality for price.
I've never been with a host as I have my own web servers up in London, but use http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ for finding reviews on hosting companies.

I use Dreamhost Shared Hosting. Runs on Debian Linux.
You don't have to be in the US to use them. I currently access them through Virgin Media (London) and have not had any issues.

They are having a sale at the moment with unlimited disk space, GB transfer... Yes, they oversell and they admit it, and if you actually use that much disk and transfer for legit purposes, good on ya!

I use it for PHP 5 (runs as you, so no need to worry about permissions, just chmod 500/700 if you really want), MySQL, Full Unix Shell (SSH in using Putty).
Plus they have "1 click install" scripts for a whole heap of open source web packages, so you don't have to install them yourself - MediaWiki (the wiki that dual-boxing uses), Gallery, Wordpress, Joomla, ...
Sometimes they have hardware issues; and they all always post about it here.

I like that they are honest and will let you know when something goes wrong (so, I've had a little downtime, maybe 2 days in 2.5 years). I'm not complaining for the price and the features I get. Also, I've found what little support I have used to be be really good.
Also a 97-day money-back guarantee.
And no girls selling the content either... :P
That's my 2 cents worth.

I've been using www.axishost.com ('http://www.axishost.com/') for a couple of years now.
Also, try checking www.webhostingtalk.com ('http://www.webhostingtalk.com/') for reviews on businesses.
