Anyone done any boxing in Lord o the Rings Online ? Any tips or hints, especially on useful, basic macros.

Macro system seems to be very limited and basic.

I think there was similar thread about lotro, try to use search, maybe you'll find something useful ;)

Not read the topic to find out how useful it is to you, but that's the other LOTRO topic that popped up first

Thanks guys; I'd read that. It doesn't help, unfortunately.

I'm going to try 5 boxing it. Looking at a Burglar, 3 Lore-masters and a Minstrel.

Doesn't seem to be a 'target' command, unfortunately. Seems limited to using 'F' keys for targetting party members. Can see it not being terribly friendly to boxers.

I got to lvl 10 tripleboxing, but never took it any further.

I theory crafted a bunch and it seems doable but I can't remember any it now.. wow I'm drawing a blank!

One of the really nice features of Lotro was skill forwarding. Once enabled you could have a support class simply target your main character. Any beneficial skills would go to the main character, any attack skills would be targeted at the main characters target.

That could be really handy if you were multi boxxing.

I Dual box in LOTRO, and I have a blast, playing a captain/minstrel I started boxing after my cpt was 50 so getting the second toon to high lvls, Eazy street!.... I unfortunately am waiting patiently like everyone else on the arival of the t52te, but hoping belkin releases it soon :)

That is right, it is the new rebirth!.

I am heavy into LOTRO, and playing on a dayly basis. Was hoping that some of my dual-boxing brothers would be up for challenge :)

I have started a kinship (guild) Vae Victus and haven't really worked on getting it going, until recently I found a use for it!

The unofficial Dual-boxing guild of LOTRO!

If there are any new comers to the game, or any people that are still sticking around that want to join up and help out. please contact either one of me!

I am trying to 2 box LOTRO for the first time, and all the tutorials and instructions seem to be for wow.

Can anyone give me some basic idea of what to do, and how to make movement.

Just loaded everything, and cant even move both at one time right now, I was thinking when I hit W, they would both walk, after adding the 2 computers with keyclone. So can anyone help a total noob?

dont have a follow or assist macro yet, but I do use a belkin n52, and mouse move most of the time.

saris

Hey kurp.

Please tell me you joined the landroval server? if not you should, and then join me in Vae Victus on your dual box :)

anyhow, I am still here, and still dualing in LOTRO. some suggestions.

the best way I have found to get both characters controlable, is to change the Key mapping in the game (this is how I have it setup):

two computers, one keyboard, one mouse.
using Multibox to transfer the key strokes to the slave computer.
on my main, I have Shift+WASD to move around.
on my Alt, I have Ctrl+WASD to move around.
I stopped the transfer of Enter and the transfer of the ` key so that I can easily press the ` key to toggle the mutlibox key broadcast.

I add things like, the second character uses F1-F5 in order to select the group members (she is a minstrel, so I need this for quick healing). and I disabled the F1-F5 keys on my main, because I found I never used them anyway, so I just click on the people I need to select.
I made it so that 1 - = is my Mains primary skills, and Shift+1 - Shift += is my alts(min) primiary skills.
other keys I have slowly unmapped in game and changed, due to things I use Often on one character I moved skills around in the quick bars etc, so that I can access those 'Key' skills I need on both characters without mouse clicking, everything else I just Key click for, things like buffs and raise dead, summoning pets etc.
I found it easy to setup (the only macro I could really find) "/shortcut 58 /follow" which maps the /follow command to quickbar button 58, I then set on my alt button 58 to the Q key, so that I can easy press F1 and then Q and the alt will follow.... The follow command breaks easily, but the pathing is quite powerful.

other suggestion:

Just started a Burg dual, and I found some of the same options apply, but the keymapping had to be different, so I copied the Key.mapp file in the LOTRO folder (my documents) on both computers. and then in game set the keymapping back to defaults, changing again the WASD to shift and crtl, as well as some other minor things, but I found that two of the same class, you can be casting the same spells, and using the same skills MOST of the time (save riddle which only effect a person once)... so when I want the burgs to stealth I simply press the stealth button and they both dissapear...

It shouldn't be that difficult to come up with your own little setup.
At this point I am messing around with AutoHotKeys to see if I can make some macros, going to start of basic, like putting F1+Q into one macro, so that I can maybe move those buttons off to the side, allowing me to move more used commands under may hand.

Just waiting on the release of the n52te right now, hoping that the macros and such that that offers, as well as the extra buttons will make my job easier.

Also, starting up a website for my kinship (dual boxers primarily) on landroval. this website will also be open to anyone that plays the game as a dualboxer, in order to share things like this with other LOTRO players, I love dual-boxing.com, but the LOTRO communty is not strong here, and a lot of the boxers I have talked to in game DON"T use this site. Let me know what you think, and if you want into the kinship :)

for anyone playing LotRO how well do you feel dual-boxing is in the game past lvl 20? it is quite effective or do you find yourself playing below par?
Just wondering how it panned out in terms of how much what we do can maximize it.

You dual box in LOTRO! that is fantastic, I think that I am the only one left here on this forum that still plays :) ... or at least still posts and checks this site :)

I have two duo's on LOTRO, the first is cpt 50/min 40 and the second I just started Burg/Burg 9

I find that the Burgs, are best suited to dual-boxing, mainly due to the fact that they have the same skills so I don't really have to worry about changing keymapping and thing that much )(see my above post)

but I LOVE the Cpt/Min duo, in my opinion one of the best ones that you could get. Gaurd/min I heard was good, but if the fight gets out of control Gaurds need healing and the mins can no longer DPS (not that they were god at that to begin with). Where as my captain, he can't tank as well (though I put a sword and board on him sometime, if there are mutli mobs, the block chance helps mitigate damage) and when push comes to shove, NOT only can the cpt, heal the min, but he can also preven t damage on her, and he Still gets to DPS to bring them down, which I step the min out of artilery mode(war speech) and turn her attention to healing.

I haven't at this point run across a quest that my dou (along with my 44 Gaurd friend, if it is a group quest) that we have NO been able to handle, save chapters, and end chain group quests (which even playing on character with a great group are often impossible).

Let me know what server you are on Ellay, I am Landroval, I would love to group with another dualer......

Also starting my own kinda dual-boxing site, Mainly for my kinship, but hoping to make it the dualing kinship, so there will be some helpful hints on that site to deal with the woes of LOTRO's limited macros...... Don't you worry though Ellay, I WILL NEVER forget what this site has done for me, OR that it is a GREAT place to get/give help to dualers, I will be sure to Mention you EVERY CHANGE I GET on my forum, and I hope that once it gets going that people on here, will show up there for the LOTRO side of things>!

I played on Landroval. I am highly considering starting again so that I can 3-box it. I was planning on playing a Guardian-Minstrel-Hunter (Tank-Healer-DPS) combo.

For anyone that is interested, they are offering the game for $9.99/month. The only catch is that you have to sign up for 3-month intervals, so it would be $29.99 every 3 months. It's a pretty good deal. Check it out. ('http://www.lotro.com/holidaypromo') But hurry, because this deal ends 2 days from now on Thursday, January 31, 2008.

Also, you can pick up the retail version of the game right now for $19.99. And you can get the collector's edition for $5 more. Prices here. ('http://www.lotro.com/buynow/turbine')

I'm not trying to sell it, honest! ;) I quit WoW about 2 months ago and have been really bored with my gaming. I devoured tons of games like CoD4, Orange Box, Prey, etc. Nothing could satisfy that MMORPG thirst. So I cranked up my LOTRO accounts again and started realizing how great this game is. And then I saw the holiday special and it made the deal even sweeter. I'm sure I'll be back in WoW when WotLK comes out. But this should keep me busy until the summer.

I'd recommend checking out the next free content update as well. It's scheduled for February and is adding a barber shop and clothing sets that can be placed on top of your armor sets without screwing up your stats. Purely cosmetic, but great features. I believe they added player housing in the previous update or 2. So there are some really great things coming from Turbine.

Hey Heenan, the offer stands to invite you into the kinship that is starting up, for Daulboxers and others. we are at this point a casual group of players looking to build a base that is big enough to do some raiding. you know, experience the rest of the games.

to answer your question directly ellay..... the only real time I feel below par, while dualing above 20's.... is I imagine exactly when even the Wower's with all their macros do....

When *&^% hits the Virtual fan. you know how it goes.

Pull Two mobs, OK just what I wanted, we kill thi----Add!.... ok I am fine, stunned back to the two..... he is almost dea---ANOTHER!, man.. ok, I have done this before.... don't let it overwelm you, just remane focused, scare him away, take agro of the Healer, Heal the tank. ..... more healing, stun again, Woot one is down, three more to go, this guy is hurt most, stun that guy...... ANOTHER.. oh man, ok, Tank is almost spent, healer low on mana, Heal tank heal tank heal tank, gain agro, stun ......... one more down, three more to go.... ok almost out of mana, HEALER DOWN>>!!!!! quick in combat rez, Woot back up.... On no, tank is almost--use potion...... ok we are, good, Heal tank heal tank heal tank heal tank healer has agro again, dammit, you have to use those skills... man This is Crazy...... tank is almost dead, out of mana, it is time to call it quits, third one down RUN!!!!!!!!! tank DOWN..... Healer gets kicked in the A88 bounces off rock, FLIES into the air, and dies due to failling damage.

-----GGRRRRRRRR--------- OK!!!... woooooooo calm....... DAMMIT I should have used the skill that saves the healer and makes me immune to damage... and the healer had that instant party heal spell that I just got... MAN I could have had that.....

so basically (if you read all that, which is what happened the last time both of us died :) ) then I am pretty sure that things like that happen in wow :) ....

but other than that, I don't really find it below par, infact there are a lot of times that you need to know EXACTLY what the other people in your party are thinking, and as I primarily PUG, that just isn't possible.... so it is nice to know what my healer is doing, when MY main runs into pull the boss, as the timing is perfect. ;)

Heya Saris,

Well I keep falling in and out of love with WoW, I didn't really like EQ2 and nothing else thats multiboxable seems to be coming out anytime soon (AoC does not seem to be multiboxable). Anyway I went to order LotRO just to gave a play aroudn with it. I checked my gmail (oh search function how I love you) and noticed my Turbine account. Went and checked it and bought the digital download.

I seemed to have made a boo boo somewhere and I ended up with two copies and two CD keys. So looks like I'll be giving this a shot at dual-boxing wether I wanted to or not haha. One feature I fucking LOVED about the account system is I can have the one account but multiple subscriptions under it. I am hoping I havn't fucked up and somehow have two subscriptions but cannot be logged into that Turbine Account on multiple PC's... anyway guess I'll find out.

Sorry to hear abnout you mess up. But glad you are triing LOTRO.

I have a bunch of wow fans and friends, that have switched over, and the general consenous is.... you LOVE, or you like it but think that wow is better...

people that come from wow, generally don't have anything bad to say about the game, but generally those people that don't like it think that it is to similar and those that love it think that it is completely different... so you will have to make up your own mind :)

HOWEVER.

Join Landroval, and contact me in game, or mail me, and I can answer any questions that you may have and help out :)

Hi guys, I'm new to this page but a BIG Lotro fan. I also want to try out multiboxing in Lotro and already have some experience with boxing in other games. However for Lotro I have to get an adequate harde setup in place for multiboxing. I plan to use at least 3 maybe 4 toons, one on the main computer and the other ones on a second machine. However Lotro seems to need much more hardware power than WOW.

So that brings me to my question. If I plan to run 3 Lotro instances on one computer, what kind of machine do I need. Is it possible to do that? Does anybody has any experience with multiple Lotro instances on one machine?

Would be nice if you could give me some advise or maybe a final setup for a machine.

Thx

I found the Turbine Luancher wouldn't let me run more than one instance of the game.

I did however find that if I had ONE Turbine Account and 2 Subscriptions, I can play two characters on two seperate PC's just happily using the one login. Just using seperate subscriptions. Pretty awesome feature. Dunno if its intended but it works.

I'm finishing my team off to 70 and once there ready for WotLK will probably cancel WoW and wait for it and play around in some other MMOs.

Of course it's possible to run multipile Lotro instances on one PC. You just have to copy the directory and start the seond launcher out of the new directory: it also works with 3,4,..... launchers.

Any suggestions on the hardware setup? It would be nice to run 3 instances on one PC. So does anybody have an experience?

Since is asked for other LotRO Dual-Boxers i have taken steps to start into a 3 Char boxing, using 3 machines.

My Setup so far:

3 Comps, AMD Athlons all of them 2 dual Core one single Core, running Vista64 1x and WinXP 2x as systems.
One main keyboard (Logitech G11) and main mouse (Logitech MX518 ) in combination with Synergy (broadcast version) on all of the machines.
Each machine has also another mouse and I plan to use Rush Boards as secondary keyboards.

Currently i use the key broadcasting to send makros (following, small battle order chains) from the G11 keyboard. That only works from the comp where its installed... strangely. But i am still getting the taste of it. :whistling:

My combined groups are 2 Guardians/1Champion... probably will replace one of the guardians with a captain. And i have a group of 3 hunters which are ... deadly... 8o

@nas: Exactly where did you copy the directory? I have tried multiple times to run 2 instances on one machine... from a second harddisk and several different ways of copying. Every time i come to the point when the second instance is trying to contact the authentification server the game breaks off. I wonder how you did that?

@Ellay: Well i cant say that much about beyond level 20 because my groups are composed of different leveled chars. And they just start to reach beyond the 20s. But basically the way i control the chars, equally classed groups are slightly easier to handle. Different classes can bring more options in, but need a bit more work on the placement of which skill or special attack in the quick access panels.

Generally, the play gets not real easier but you gain more synergy between the chars considering loot and such. The internal functions of following and the relay through a main char is working fine. Its fun with 2 chars and it gets more challenging with 3. I wonder if someone will go beyond the 4 one day, because the hardware requirements are bigger than those of other games. Nevertheless Multi-boxing LotRO rocks!!

Oh and i play on EU-Server Vanyar... anyone else from there around?

Nas

@ Titus:

Mmmmmhh, I'm aslo using the EU client and multiple clients work perfect on one computer. I jsut copied the Lotro folder and renamed it. Afterwards made a link with the turbine launcher in that directory, and that's it. The only thing I still have problems with is the performance. Three instances need a lot of resources. I jsut tried three instances and it's lagging espcially in cities (everything on low). As far as I know Lotro just uses one CPU core. maybe it's possible to advise the cores to the instances and improve the performance. Anybody with experience on that?

Would love to hear more about this.

I currently dual in Lotro, and am Loving it, never had so much fun (for those starting out, I have a dualboxing Kinship on landroval, would love to have you there).

as for three boxing, and system requirements, there are some issues I can see, Lotro Eats RAM for Breakfast, and I find that even if the system is powerful, that there are sections in the game that lag down.

my setup is this
Main Comp toon1
AMD X25200
2Gb DDR 4200
Nvidia 8600 X2 SLI
Gbit Eth to second computer

Second Comp toon2
AMD 3800
2Gb DDR 3700
Nvidia 7800GTOC (single)

I find that on my second computer (I have the graphic turned down) that I have no troulbes, but because I am always looking at the first toons screen, I have the graphics almost maxed. After running through a bunch of Tweaking with the system, and Lotro client, as well as rolling back the Nvidia drives (DX9) I finally got rid of most of the graphical anomilies, but still when I enter PvP or the old forest I lag out, as well as Bree (though bree is so huge that I think the lag is an equation of their server)

I use mutliBox Server/Client to transfer keys from primary comptuer to secondary, and I have since installed AutoHotKeys allowing me to map out some simple macros on the second toon for casting Spells and healing (she is a Minstrel)
I think that I would find three toons Too much, as the only real "Macro" that the game has is a /follow, and you would have to be Extremely creative with AutoHotKeys or another program in order to have the characters space out and attack correctly without being able to "SEE" their screens, and adjust them individually from time to time, specially because the /follow command breaks very easily though the use of target assist is very handy.

Let me know if you are interested in helping Vae Victus, the unofficial dual boxing Kinship on landroval, grow in size. Currently we have one dual boxer (me) and a bunch of my close friends, one of which is looking into getting a second computer to dual-box.

NasHello.

I'm interested in your solution to the problem that each instance of lotro binds to a specific socket on your machine and thus a second instance of lotro is unable to bind to this socket on the same machine and quits with an error message if the first instance has this socket already allocated.

The Errormessage from the lotro-software describes exactly this behaviour.

This problem is definitely not solveable by copying some files around so i'm very interested in your solution.

I'm also definately intrested in doing this, and any extra information anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I've tried multiple ways of doing this, and nothing has been successful so far :(

Seems to be a socket problem, but I'm not quite sure.

IMO lotro would not be advantageous to box unless you did it with creeps.
The only real ranged classes are Hunters and LM's, LM's probably being the best bet. I still can't see this being very effective or easy to utilize.

I have a 50 mintrel and rank 5 creep, but gave up the game due to the broken, limited, and poorly thought out PvP.
PvE will be cool as they add more content- but I need PvP in a game.

You can definitely get multiple instances of LotRO to run on one PC. I have only ever tried 2 at a time though. If you have made a copy of your Lord of the Rings online folder inside of the Turbine folder and renamed it(example: LotRO 2ndClient), made a copy of the LOTROinvoker.exe file inside of your renamed LOTRO folder, rename it (example: Client 2) and then dragged that to desktop you should be able to run 2 instances now, make sure you have both of the login windows opened and ready to login. If you do one and enter the world before you have the second one started and ready for login, you will usually get the message "LotRO is already running, would you like to bring it to the front?" message. Also I am running a Core2Duo e6750 over clocked to 3.66Ghz with 8G of ram with the paging file size minimized and then disabled. I also set the CPU affinity of each LotRO client so each one is on a separate core independent of each other. This has reduced the overall % of CPU usage during play compared to having both clients utilizing both cores as the system sees fit. The one issue I do have is that I am using Keyclone to broadcast my keys to my third character on a seperate PC and would really like to get my second Instanced character more involved. Is there a utility I can use to lock that window in the forefront so that it accepts the broadcast from Keyclone??

I just wanted to say that i two boxed LOtR from beta until about 2 months after it came out. I played a champ and minst ( an awesome duo btw ) Champs are plate wearing AE masters.. they are the best AE class in the game and they wear PLATE! I started playing a capn.. but i ran into a champ/mist combo killing 4-8 things at a time and had to try it.. I did.. and LOVED it! I got them both to 50 and they both have maxed tradeskills as well. a healer/melee combo is easy. the fact that you can keep your melee targeted for heals and you "auto" assist him to do dps made it work very well. Aslo If you have an NPC targeted and heal.. it will heal whoever the mob is damaging. I no longer play LotR becasue... well, I love WoW too much and i can 5 Box in WoW 8) I also two boxed EQ2..3 Boxed DAoC and 5 boxed EQ1 ( long before i knew what keyclone or maximizer was ( alt-tab ftw )

Hey there, just signed up in here and thought i'd add a wrinkle. I 2 box grd/min, have since lv 5 and they are both 50 now. Cannot take them in instanced like Rift but have had a successful run or 2 in CD in a group. Issue I have is I would like to know if it is possible to run 2 accounts on one comp. I have this post in another thread but having the question here isnt' all that bad either cause, well, more peeps would read and might have a suggestion. I am on Silverload server though and as interesting it would be to join a 2boxing kin, i dont know any on Silverload. But my main question is how to get 2 launchers working. When I try to launch the game from a 2nd directory it gives me the message, the launcher is currently running and thats it. Cannot bring up both toons on one comp. Any suggestions how to get around this, if theres even a way? Thanks a ton.

I've been playing LOTRO since August, and two-boxing and then three-boxing since September or so.

I use separate installations on three computers, so I'm not sure how to go about doing multiple instances on one; just haven't had to learn. I use Synergy to pass the mouse back and forth, and Multibox to broadcast keystrokes. The main character uses 1-=, the char on the left uses F1-F12, and the char on the right uses the number pad, so by using shift, alt and ctrl, I can set up to 4 rows of quickslots easily.

So far I've run a group with Loremaster (main), Guard and Minstrel up to 50, one with Burglar (main), Captain and Hunter up to 50, and my current set is Champion (main), Guardian and Minstrel, and they're in the low 20's. Of course, the ones that are now level 50 I mix and match as needed.

I get the impression from this site that multiboxers prefer running groups of the same type of character, preferably at range, but I have to say LOTRO works pretty well with balanced mini-fellowships, and in melee as opposed to all ranged. If I had the resources to four-box, I would add a bit more DPS or healing as needed and could probably do most of the group content, as well as just flying through the solo stuff.

My original intention was to get one of each class up to 50, and then use that character solo for endgame stuff as needed, but recently, I've two and even three-boxed some of the stuff like Carn Dum, Urugarth or the Rift with the rest of the party being made up of kin-mates, and it's actually gone pretty well.

If anyone finds themselves playing LOTRO on the Brandywine server, send a tell to Slartibartfasto or Belloc, I'd be glad to chat. Also, much as this site helped me put my setup together, and much as I value this community, I'd be eager to join a more LOTRO-centric multi-boxing community as well.

What's your point Raflsch? Elistrea did describe how he was able to start more than one instance of LotRO on one computer. It is not very polished, but it is possible.

However, having two instances open without any additional software doesn't accomplish much though. You can have one character follow along and soak up experience and complete quests, but they do not add anything to the group. LotRO does not accept any input if it isn't in the foreground. So programs like Keyclone don't do anything for you without using some other application or utility to assist in keeping each instance of LotRO in the foreground.

I don't come to the forums much, I noticed that there may be other people boxing rings now. i have been muti-boxing rings since beta. I used to 2 box, until I found keyclone. I 4 box now with 4 seperate PC's. (Captain and 3 hunters)

Skill target forwarding is your friend in LOTRO.

My point is, that we have 2 guys so far claiming that they have lotro running several times on one box ignoring the stated problems that others in several threads have but absolutely no one can present a working solution that another one can comprehend. But hey, they have solutions that only work for them. Because they or their equipment are special, hum? After years of reading online boards very funny to present a screenshot that anyone with "Paint" can fake instead of presenting hard facts that another one can comprehend. *snicker*

FWIW I can run 2 instances of Lotro on 1 pc as well. Got a dell xps 700 with dual core pentium d's. Just made a 2nd copy of my Lotro folder and fired up both copies of turbineinvoker.exe.

Yes, I also am unable to send keystrokes to both running instances. So sorry for just repeating what has already been said. Just wanted to confirm that it can be done.

Since the keystrokes wont go to both instances I use Octopus to run two toons on two pcs. Works great and never wanna go back to 1 toon.

cheers & have fun boxing

Is there a utility I can use to lock that window in the forefront so that it accepts the broadcast from Keyclone??Okay, quick question. Do you have totally different accounts? By this, I mean do you have 2 different user names to login with? I've tried this method in other variations, such as copying the folder to another drive, to the desktop and directly to c:. No good. I have 1 Turbine user name with 2 accounts attached to it. I'm wondering if that is the problem.

Elistrea does have multiple account logins.

Yes you will need a separate account for each instance of the game you wish to open.

I have a turbine login name, lets call it: mylogin and under this turbine login, I have 2 accounts, account01 and account 02. Does this work or do I need to setup mylogin1 and mylogin2 on the turbine site?

Not sure I follow exactly what you mean, but I have 2 copies of LotRO with two independent product keys, in order to log into two instances at the same time.

Is it posible to FRAPS the desktop and show both instances of LotRO running? I don't think so, looked at it and tried

. Or is there another video capture app. I could do that with??

Or better yet!! Raflsch do you know a good video editing App. I could "photoshop" a video of 2 instances running on my desk top??? JK!

I just copied my main lotro directory and it does in fact allow me to
run two instances of lotro on one computer. Here are some basic step by
step instructions:

1. Go into my computer and find where you installed your Turbine game folder

2. Open said folder and right click on the lord of the rings online folder (select copy and paste within your turbine folder)

3. Depending on the machine, you may have to wait a bit for it to copy.

4. When it is finished, open the new folder and find the Turbine
Launcher icon (should be about 2.11 mb) and copy that to the desk top.

5. Click your original copy of lotro to start the program, then click
the new turbine launcher (your computer may ask you to unblock or block
turbine so please allow it to access the internet.

6. You should be able to play two instances of lotro on one box now. I
am now dual boxing my warden and using a lore master for help. Cheers

Is the macro system still limited to /follow ? Any target forwarding in the game ?

I'd really appreciate hearing about any macros people are using or how they are getting around not using them. I'm using Octopus across multiple PCs and am looking at running 2 characters on separate PCs.
