Seems strange that when I had the card, I installed with 8.8 drivers and worked well for the night. It was awesome. The next day after a shutdown my video was whacked, as if the monitor identity got screwed and I couldn't see anything from any monitor (running dual monitors 22" and 24"). I had to reinstall the driver again and this started the problem that would just not go away....

Basically, to cut the long story short, when i ran wow in windowed mode it locked up the entire system. The OS didn't even take cues from the keyboard (err.. numlock,capslock.etc..). I had to hard bounce the system to get it back online. Same happens after i ran wow again. This isn't dependent on how many wow instances i run, could be one, two, or five w/e. I could almost lock it up consistently by switching from one wow to another. Time is not a factor too. Could be a few seconds to a couple of minutes, not longer than five though.

I kept trying and searching for an answer.. Nothing. Reinstallation of same driver didn't work and driver that came with the Sapphire card was worse - won't load in my system at all (even if i was using 64bit vista driver). Wiped OS and reinstalled driver still didn't help. Finally, i pulled the card out and in came a GTX260, installed the driver, bam. Works! Unisntalled 260 and reinstalled 4870X2 no worky. Pulled 4870X2 and installed gtx280, bam works again! I RMA'd the the 4870X2 and just stuck with the GTX280-BUT i love the 4870X2. It's got a great promise for when a stable driver comes out. For the time that it worked on my system, I would say it beat the 280 by as much as 50% in FPS (and unfortunately in heat too!heh). But, I just got tired of working through the problem after a couple of weeks. I gave up thinking it's a driver issue...

Anybody else experienced this issue. I'd like to get my hands back on the 4870X2 if I can confirm that it's not driver. Of course ATI support is like... I won't even go there.

EDIT: for gram errs

Glad you posted this. I was about to go buy one of these puppies. Let me know what you find out. I use 3870 atm and get screen black outs now and then. most the time they blink off..then back on again. But other times it crashes my system. I think WoW no likey MB+ ATI

You should e your system specs. For starters, your power supply. I run 2 x 3870 with a quad core, 8gb ram and 3 hard drives and i run a kilowatt PSU and i never have screen blackouts, lagging, nothing. I'm running two dell 24" monitors each off their own card and i never have a problem.

Maybe your PSU doesn't have the juice for that card?

Maybe try the card in someone else's machine before you classify it as RMA.

I just built a new system with a 4870x2 running Vista 32 and my FPS was worse then my 7950GT and I could only get 1400 by 1050 on my desktop (Samsung Syncmaster 244T) and WoW where as I got 1900x1200 on my old card. To say the least I was highly disappointed, I tried various things as you did too including updating to 8.8 drivers but still no luck. On a single WoW instance I get 25-30 FPS tops and with 5 instances running I lag in SW. I'm running the following main components on a newly built rig:

Core 2 Quad Q6600 w/ 4GB RAM only 3GB showing until I upgrade to 64bit on a BIOSTAR TPower I45 LGA 775 MB

I messed around with it for 3-4 days and still have the card and am thinking about returning it...the card runs Crysis great but I mainly bought this when I got back into WOW/MB + RAF.

I would like to keep the card but it would seem that I'm better off with a 260ftw or 280 and also have some money left over. Sorry I wish I could give you better news/hope with my experience, I could be doing something wrong I just don't know what else to try at this point.

Just saw some responses to this post so, I'm also running a Antec TruePower TPQ-1000w

Regarding my system... I didn't really know of anyone close that have a power supply that may work with it. I tried it on my other computer and just won't load the driver (whether it's the 8.8 or older catalyst driver).. Thinking power issue... On my main pc, however, here's the brief spec:

Q6600,ASUS Rampage Formula X48 MB,8GB Mem,VistaX64,3HDD Raid0,2x screen 22"/24", 5 wow instances

Power supply is rated at 62A of combined load on the 12v rail: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153043. "Should" be able to handle 1 4870x2 as I looked at the power consumption at one point peaking at 40A..

Edit: The first night was awesome! Hence my sentiments about giving it up... My FPS on main 16x10 (22")in shat was at high 30s on prime time (vert sync on) w/ 4 clones running at same res on 24" split evenly into 4 windows. Clones maxbkfps are at 20. Now with the gtx280, i get about 20ish FPS, mid 20s max in Shat primetime..
