Some amazing other wallpapers that really give your desktop an extra "awe inspiring" feel. This is where I found Adolescent Eyes which I have used for my background for over a year.

I had to render my own, not much 5120 x 4800 wallpaper out there!

nice,

so it is not a spanned desktop then!

the reason I ask is I ran into probs trying to span across 2 monitors 1920x1200 + 1600x1200 on a Radeon 2950XT... just wouldn't happen

I have hardware switches to switch the monitors to alternate computers when I box. So it is dual viewed for normal desktop use and then I swap over to box. Running 5 copies of WoW, even on this 4 gig quad core machine is possible but still less than ideal. I suppose I could try fiddling with horizontal spanning and see if that would make it playable but for the time being, this works about as good as possible.

3x 8800GTX and 6x 30" monitors.

how are your neck handling that? :P

I find that I allready has too much field of view with my setup of 1x30", vertical 20" and the 4x 17" screens above them.

I guess you could place them at some distance to get a better view of them without moving your head too much, but then again, full resolution would make everything kinda small and hard to see.

I love it. I sit about 4' away and it fills my primary field of view. Beyond that, I have 3 17" turned vertically (just like the 30"s) on either side.

Roughly 35 megapixels of information. I use the 17"s to monitor stocks, futures, commodities, etc as they update in real time. I more glance at those than stare. The main 30" ones I combine with VNC computers and virtual machines so I can process a ton of stuff at once (rendering, scanning, searching etc) without bogging down my main system or resorting to clustering, etc. It really helps to be able to VNC into a rendering station and interact with it then minimize it and let it do its work.

I find it fills up my field of view without being SO big that I can't see everything without neck strain but this is due more to the design than anything else. If you were to just put 6 of them out there, they would not work well if you wrapped them around your desk. I mount them vertically and stack them 3 wide and 2 high. I mainly browse the net on the 30" in front of me (which gives me TONS of text, posts, etc without scrolling) but I had to design and build a custom chair, desk, hoist and supports to comfortably suspend the monitors in such a way that I can see above and below horizontal. The way I am suspending them just would not work on a desk. Simply putting them on a desk would result in too much strain and vastly suboptimal viewing.

I will post pictures at some point - it will make sense then.

Sounds like you have done a lot of work with your workstation :D

while some people wonder why the hell people bothers, other people think half the fun is just building it all by yourself.

Personally I think there is nothing like when you have built something cool yourself from scratch, may it be computer rooms, houses, cars or other stuff.

Btw, why do you use VNC? I find that rdp is much more efficiant and lagfree. It might be because youre running some other OS than MS though, I wouldn't know.

I use Tight VNC. It is more or less real time but most things except 3d rendering. Regular VNC.... is not very good at all. Gigabit network of course. I am open to other suggestions but I do run Linux systems.

And I build it myself because I need something custom fit for ME. I need something that meets MY needs and allows me to spread out and have a TON of information at my disposal. It also has to be comfortable. In order to achieve my goals, I had no choice but to custom build it. It took me about 6 months to build it all and finish my boxing setup but to me, it was completely worth it.

Although once I get my new CNC fabrication equipment and 3d printer... I may be tempted to improve on things further :)

We will see :)

Also, you can only have one active Remote Desktop session under XP. I regularly run 3 - 5 Tight VNCs.

Tight VNC implements a video hook driver - so it doesn't poll for changes like regular VNC does.

Regular VNC is simply unusable even on a local LAN.

Ok, I've only tried regular VNC, and thats a long time ago.

I usually use remote desktop to win2003 servers instead (work as an it-admin)

However you have given me ideas for a better workstation setup. For now I only use my 4x17" on my boxing computers, but maybe I should get some kvm's and additional graphics cards on my main computer as well, so I can use them for work too. It could be nice to have 4 extra monitors for remote administring servers.

I highly suggest you do that, for non 3d apps, video cards are ULTRA cheap these days. You can even get USB ones (although eventually you max out the USB shared bus).

So you can literally have well over 10 monitors on a single computer.

For normal 2d work, thats so easy and cheap.

Voila, I'll bet xzins' is just like this, just switch the paladin with mages and priest (and maybe some warlocks?)

Uhhh... not really.

My 30" monitors are mounted vertically, not horizontally. And they are suspended in mid air rather than on a desk.

And there are 3 17" monitors on each side, stacked vertically as well. They are about 80% of the height of the 30"s.

More like this:

http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x45/Xzin-WoW/samplesetup.jpg

Only it gradually curves around to maintain the direct 90 degree viewing angle for each screen.

And well, it is literally suspended in the air....... it weighs about 250 lbs.

Nor is it to scale....

But you get the gist.

Close to 7' by 7' - fills up 100% of my vertical FOV and about 75% of my horizontal. But I will spare you all of the details about vertical vs horizontal FOV and which ones humans are more sensitive to and why.

Suffice it to say, I REALLY like my setup.

This will probably come across more epeen than I intend it. Because clearly, owning and using monitors doesn't make somebody leet or great or anything really.

But even Al Gore can't deny the power of the 30"ers

http://img.timeinc.net/time/photoessays/2007/gore_life/20.jpg

SUCH an improvement over 17"ers.

yea, I find my 30" a great investment the resolution is awsome. What brand is yours btw? Using a Dell screen myself.

They all use the same panel, except the Samsungs, which use their own.

Apple, Dell, HP - all the same really.
