Any of you try out Spore? I bought it yesterday. Huge hit with my kids but I have some problems with it. I'm not sure how I feel about it overall. It's fun in an innovative sort of way, but there's some things that are lacking to make it really fun. I'm halfway through the city stage and from what I've read, the space stage is the best part so we'll see.

I picked up the game on Friday night and played around for a few hours to get a feel for it. By Saturday evening I had reached the space age. I've since boxed it up and put it away.
I waited for years to get my hands on this game, while it didn't really disapointment me I'm not as excited as I expected to be. Its very innovative but the long term playability is not there. The stage I enjoyed the most was the Cell stage. The stage I least enjoyed was the Civilisation stage. I was hoping for a LOT more when I got to this stage but I found it lacking.
I'd rate it:
Innovation 10/10
Short term entertainment 7/10
Long term entertainment 3/10
I bought the collectors edition, only because they had sold out the normal one. I got a lot of enjoyment from the art book and the Making Of DVD.

I've been waiting a looong time for this game, but I refuse to buy it as long as they choose to use SecureROM. If you aren't aware of this DRM mechanism and all its history, I advise you to do some googling.
Anyway, I'm pretty bummed out but I just refuse to support a company that chooses to do this twice in a few months (see: Mass Effect).

I agree with all the above. I finally got to Space Stage and the potential to what the game could have been vs what was released is very disappointing. Agree with Fleecy's scores.
I'd rate this as a don't buy until it's much cheaper, patched or some meaningful expansion comes up and even more so because of the DRM.

I have a friend who works for EA, and he was very excited about the game. When it was released, I played it for about 8 hours total and I havent really touched it since. I found the creature editor to be the most enjoyable, making just weird animals and such, but the flexibility that the game was promoting wasnt there imo.
Also the game promotes a simple play style taht combines a whole bunch of differetn genre together to make spore. This also makes the game completly watered down and not very enjoyable per stage.
If i wanted a hack and slash, I'd go play diablo 2, a very well made hack and slash.
If i wanted to play an RTS, I'd go play starcraft, once again, a very good rts.
If i wanted to play a city building, expand and conquor turn based, there is always civilization series, every game in that series is very good as well.
I just didnt find spore to be that interesting. But of course some people like bananas and some dont.
personal score.
4/10 overall

either the design never lived up to the hype in the first place or the gameplay was severely watered down for marketability
either way, i'm not touching it with a 9000 ft pole as long as that DRM is there

Screw secure rom.
1) torrent the game
2) it works with no trouble no secure rom. Purely no online features.
3) if it entertains you more than a few hours and you will continue to play it, then you can go buy it.
I found it lacking. Novelty yes, long term play, no

I stumbled upon someone's blog who leaked out some of the very first information about Spore, before it was even a blip on the radar of the gaming sites and I was sooo excited. But as usual, the hype just didn't really seem to make good. Over time I found myself losing interest especially after finding out about Secrurom being included. So yeah, love Will Wright, really admire his genius and had a lot of hope for this game being as revolutionary as The Sims. Not sure if I'll buy it or not though.

i got to the 2 phase on land, as a meat eater, got boored and shut the game down, the next day i tried it as a plant eater got to 1 phase on land, and closed it down.
i will proberbly play it every now and then when i have a half a hour or so to spare and i dont have anyting else interesting to do. but this is not a game i feel the urge to play.
granted its unique but it does not have the same "pull" as the civ games. or wow or diablo 2 or starwars kotor series and all the rest of the games where i did have the urge to play.
pretty much if i have the choice betwin taking a afternoon nap or load spore, i rather go and hug my pillow for 30 min
i am pretty sure this game should inspire other to create someting someday that will be more enjoyable to spend time with.

I was fairly disappointed too. I've made it to space and enjoyed it up till then, but space feels tedious. Too much time spent just moving around.

I was so excited about this game about 2 or 3 years ago... I didn't even know it actually came out...
