What does everyone usually do for gear at lower levels? I hate having crappy gear at level 20 - 40. I do quests, but you can only get so much gear through that.

The fact that there's 5 of you usually offsets that fact.
I'm assuming you're a shammy multiboxer just like the other 5 billion people of the masses, I would suggest you just get the robes of arugalx5 and it will stick with you for a long time. All leather/mail is for physical DPS until around level 50, at which point you are about to move into outland so it doesn't matter. It looks like you are stuck with clothie gear.

Pretty much all Quest gear to date for me. Because there's 5 of you you can really get away with only quest gear. Even when i hit outlands i was doing just fine with pre BC gear.

My "Main" team consists of 4 Hunters and 1 Druid. My "Alt" team consists of 5 shamans. I don't really have THAT much of a hard time with it, its just that I've been blowing through zones so quickly that I outlevel them and need to go to a higher one. It's not so bad once you hit 40+, but 10-30 im pretty bad in the gear area. Of course, like you guys said, I pretty much one shot anything anyway, but I just have this nagging feeling everytime I look in my character tab that I should get better gear from the AH or something just to hold me off.

Honestly I don't upgrade with anything other than quest gear cause I'm LAZY! I can't be bothered with upgrading 5 characters. In fact, I don't plan on paying special attention to my gear until I hit lvl 70, when gear really matters.
At low levels I just don't believe its worth the effort. Almost like your setting yourself up for disappointment cause the gear really wont make a difference at all.
IF I HAD to upgrade anyone on my team between 1-60 it would be my Tank, thats it.

My shamans were half naked at 40 and still wearing some level 1-5 white quest rewards until outlands.

Until I start instancing, I have all my teams run around in tuxedos or black dresses, depending on gender(!). Nothing outside of an instance lasts long enough for gear to be a worry, and having some sort of theme to your team's gear makes a clear statement that you're dressed that way because you want to be. Naked would probalby work too, come to think of it.
I didn't even bother training between levels 46 and 58 on my last team, either. I got fed up with having to run back to the trainer. You pretty much just obliterate everything in your path by sheer weight of numbers.
Once I decide to start instancing, I either do a quick boost run with a 70 to get some gear or dump some cash at the AH. I did that at level 40 on my shammies, so they could all have some mail armour, but their next gear upgrades will all come from Outland.

i wouldn't really bother. Use quest gear. It's not as good as other stuff, but even wasting a lot of time by doing "fun stuff" instead of power leveling you'll level very, very fast. So don't bother. Just play.

On my 5 shamans I just used non-collection quest gear. I just hit 40 and JUST replaced some level 1 bracers on my 5 shamans with a level 39 quest equivalent (in dustwallow). And I just finished the "into the scarlet monastery" quest and got all 5 of my shamans their first necklace. Gear isn't a big deal until outlands, but I did make a small effort to keep/save a good instance shield (Aegis of the scarlet commander), and mail armor, for my main shaman to tank with - now at level 40 with some mail gear on and the good shield he has a 42% damage mitigation which is pretty good i think, and hes only wearing a few pieces of mail (maybe 4). Will help in tanking uldaman and upcoming instances like BRD.

Unless you really have fun gearing up at low levels, I wouldn't bother going out of your way. The low level gear is only really going to make a big difference on a class that depends on gear like a warrior. Any caster is not going to get much out of gearing up at anything under 60. You won't get any damage buff or anything. Mostly all you'll get is more mana, which could help you cast another couple of spells before you're out of mana. I don't know that spending 10 runs of SFK is worth that. In the outlands, you start getting a ton of damage buffs and significant mana regen buffs, which will eventually increase your power and endurance tenfold, so it becomes worth it then.
