View Full Version : Vastly better new pc...much worse performance with KeyClone 5 box on 1 PC...why?

My old system was Dual Core AMD 4200, XP, 2gig, ATI x1900 (about 2 years old) video card....and it was running 5 box on one PC 'ok' even using picture in picture (took less then one second to switch windows).
My new system is Vista 64 bit home priemium, 8 gig, q9550 2.83 quad core and BFG 9800GX2. (the vidio card alone cost more then complete last system). Now, 5 box on one pc is impossible. It takes 60-75 seconds (!!) when I hit F8-F12 for screen to redraw, and even in single window...framerate is <10 and often less then 5 FPS.
Something has to be wrong...WoW not like my new system? Keyclone dont like it? Any ideas?

Run 1 copy of wow without Keyclone, hows that run?
Add a 2nd, etc...
Honestly it sounds like something isn't right, and I highly doubt it's Keyclone at fault given the description of the behavior.

since it's a new machine, did you install your wow fresh as well? if so, did you drop the wow video quality from high to medium or low?
http://www.dual-boxing.com/wiki/index.php/Ingame_Graphic_Detail
did you restrict your wows fps by setting the maxfpsbk and maxfps?
another idea would be to check the mainboard. which mainboard do you have?
i recently found out that my massive, end-all-be-all, rig has a problem with the mainboard.... seems it's 'throttled' :cursing:

MB is Asus Ravage Formula. Since my first post, I went to Nvidia and got their latest drivers (did not help...well, maybe 1 or 2 fps and still an eternity when I click F8-F12).
I then took previous posters suggustion. I ran (full screen, 1600x1000 all settings maxed) 5 WoW's...in Shatt. Was getting 60 FPS on all 5. So, problem is with Window/PiP.
On TaskMan, all 5 WoW's are still running right now, including this IE 7 and it shows 4.31 gig used...virtually zero activity on the 4 cpu usage box's. The settings on all 5 WoW's are default...WoW was installed fresh, and new KeyClone bought today. One different thing...I made 5 directories...but also tried it using same location.
So, not sure...I think I saw another question about a week ago on here about the same 9800gx2 card...cant recall what he said, but will look it up.

F8-F12 - opening bags?
Try getting rid of all your auctioneer stuff. I had some major problems with Auctioneer lately. With just a single player, it would freeze my window for 2-3 seconds the first time I opened a bag or moused over a bag. Stacking 5 freezes together could make it real bad.
I was even experiencing a crash bug for a while. Removal of auctioneer (and all the other things that came with it) fixed everything. I haven't replaced auctioneer since then.

Another update. I chaged maxfpsbk and maxfps to 5, 40 and that has made it playable...but still much slower then older slower pc. What hasppens when I press F8-F12, the Region1 window goes away, I see Keyclone in middle of desktop and the 4 small wondows with my alts for about 8 seconds....then new window comes up. Before the above mod, it was taking up to 75 seconds...now, its around 8 or 9. (the window FPS went from <5 to around 20). This is playable, but still 8 or 9 times slower then older much slower PC.
As said before, I think the 9800gx2 has been listed with problems on these forums before...will search them out shortly.
Thanks for looking into it.

I would suspect that if there are known issues with the 9800gx2 then you may be onto something. I am running a similar setup, although not that powerful but the only difference is 32bit Vista and 8800GT(512mb).
No issues outside of major cities and a slight slowdown in shatt/ogrimmar. I am only running 4 toons atm , until my shaman group hits 23 , then will start running 5. All under 1 install of WoW.
Coilfang 13's Timbaa, Timbee, Timboo, Timbuu.........coming soon Paladin
Coilfang 70 Lock-Incarnat, 70 Mage-Pollypocket, 68 Hunter Muclesmague, 65 Shaman Hornsy.....coming soon 70 Druid

if you ran 5 wows on the same machine, all @ 1600x1200... then they were stacked. the ones not showing were not impacting your performance much at all. lay them out side by side, not overlapping, and see what you get.
how many displays are you using?
pip swap does move memory around and in some cases, will re-render surfaces pushing the cpu/gpu harder and dropping your fps. this is within wow and out of my control. if you are pip swapping from one graphics card to another (my situation) then you are moving the graphics memory between cards... a fairly pricey operation. (i have wondered if you would get the same effect if you were using 2 displays on one card...)

don't forget to check whether your desktop is extended or stretched onto the second monitor. Stretched gets MUCH better frame rates than Extended. Check your video card control panel for the way to set it. I have an ATI card, so I can't help with the Nvidia settings, but I'm sure they are there.
Personally I get 60 FPS with a stretched desktop, and 10 FPS with an extended desktop.
Good luck!

Good luck!I thought they fixed that with vista?

I thought they fixed that with vista? I don't know if they did or not... haven't installed Vista to try it... but I know it exists in XP.

They did. Multi-monitor support and DirectX was rewritten for Vista so you can use any combination of windows\monitors that you'd like and performance will be comparable.

Old system had AMD? Mentioned this in another thread, maybe someone with lots of hardware can test. AMD has the integrated memory controller and Hypertransport bus. This would help in large memory memory movements me thinks.

I had a very similar performance drop when I last upgraded my system. It turned out to be the quad core! I replaced the quad core with my old dual core and my frame rates almost doubled.
I'm running Vista 64, 8Gb RAM, SLI nVidia 8800 GT, dual core CPU (forget the model).
When I had a quad core in this system I was getting around 15-25 FPS. After putting in a dual core I'm now sitting around 60+

people your missing the obvious,
9800gx2=sli sli+wow=issues especially on multimonitor.
disable v-sync, try making setting up all 5 clients on one monitor and doing pip swapping after disabling second monitor etc etc.

i have 2x 260s.. crankin cards... and was getting about 20/30 fps with 1 full screen on one monitor and 2x2 on the 2nd .. each display in 1280x1024 mode. each monitor on a different card.
then i moved them all to one monitor... 1 main + 4 stack on the right using 1920x1200 resolution...
i'm now getting 50fps on each... go figure
:pinch:
(my next move would be to try 2 monitors from the same card... but i was happy getting it to this point, and have been caught up playing a bit...)
im gona go with the duel board on the gx2, nvidia always seems to have problems with them.
you sure your motherboard bios settings are right? ie, fsb for the ram ect.. also it could be your harddrive/drives they are always going to be the slowest componet of your system. i will only run intel boards because im very anal about my HD speeds. intel matrix raid owns nvidias board raid :P

the drives only come into the picture when new content needs to be loaded. but if you have been standing in the same area, in the sticks, for 10+ minutes without moving (noodling with macros and what not), nothing new is being loaded. therefore, the drives are out of the equation
that leaves the boards and data coming across the main board

make sure you have vista sp1, because it fixes the problem of sli or multiple gpu cards seeing a 60% preformace decrease in windowed mode.

9800gx2=sli sli+wow=issues especially on multimonitor. The 9800GX2 is a dual-Gpu card not 2x 9800, When i made the switch from ATI to Nvidia i had this same problem - came down to a nvidia setting "Multi-display/mixed-GPU accerlation" i changed it from the default dual display mode to the single display mode and it fixed all my problems, you can find the setting under Manage 3D settings.
