View Full Version : Too much multiboxing?

I'm so used to multiboxing now that on the way to work I actually checked my rear view mirror to see if my clones were still following me correctly. Then I was like wait...this isn't wow. So after I hit 60 this weekend I think it's time for a break. :D

4 days of waiting in AV queues.. twice I've heard the "ching" sound of the "Enter battleground" message popping up. I'm frantically trying to click the "Enter" button on all 5 toons and nothing is happening. Then I realize my alarm clock doesn't have an "off" button - I have to flip a switch.

My girlfriend was running back and forth between two TVs the other day, watching some movie on one TV and the Olympics on another. I /point /laugh and /say HAHA you're multi-boxing TV watching.
She had no idea what I was talking about.

I've been getting this one a lot lately, especially if I pvp before bed - in that half asleep half awake daze I feel like I can see 3 clones of myself in smaller windows.
Then last night I woke up at about 3am really dehydrated thinking I had to go get water 4 separate times.
Fortunately no "real life" incidents yet, just this half dream state thing I'm getting

The past few nights I kept having dreams of multiboxing, I don't remember what entirely I was dreaming of but I remember thinking I needed to do something 3x. It is the strangest feeling! I mean, I'm used to dreaming about games I play too much but this is a new one for me lol

A couple times I've woken up in the morning and go to take a shower and wonder how I was going to fit 5 of me in there.
Glad I'm not the only one, LOL. Usually happens when first waking up and not fully awake.

Wow this is almost creepy. I just recently started multi-boxing the past few weeks and have gone from 1-50 on my 5-shaman team. I have woken up a couple of times in the middle of the night dreaming about something routine during my day (like brushing my teeth) with this feeling/anxiety that I needed to do it five times.
Then when I woke up I was like no, no, just once...
What is so strange is that I have never really dreamed of video games before in like 10+ years of gaming. This would probably make a fantastic psychology experiment for a prof or grad student or something.
What is it about multiboxing that affected my brain so much that now I am waking up dreaming/anxious about having to do things five times???

Usually after a long session and i have logged out, i try to
Turn the telly on 5 times.
start to pull out more than one coffee cup
try to put the cat out 5 times....
its then i take a break from wow

I made a thread about this a few months ago and people thought I was crazy :(
IRL sensations after multiboxing ('http://www.dual-boxing.com/forums/index.php?page=Thread&postID=76662&highlight=#post76662')
The sensation has passed now... I only felt it the first 2 weeks I multiboxed.
Usually only happened early in the morning before I was fully awake. Things like...
- Thinking (if only for a moment) you need to do things for each of yourself
- A sensation where you feel like you might get caught on something, so when you walk you almost want to check behind you.
- Feeling like there are multiples of yourself in the same place (mostly just as I woke up)
Sometimes before doing some mundane action I get the impulse to press the pause/break key to make sure not all of me's do it. Can't explain it beyond that. Pretty screwed up.
Would be worth further study. I don't know how to describe it either but it changes your way of thinking - at least subtly. Makes you stretch your brain and bifurcate your focus from one thing at once to two (or more). You never wind up being able to fully concentrate on two things at once but with practice you start to get good at it - you become able to do two things decently well at the same time, constantly shifting back and forth between them almost automatically.
Not sure in what ways this stretches the mind but it certainly does feel a bit different for the first while.
What are you all doing 5x though? Except a few actions, I generally did things once and it happened 5x. Except opening up npc quests, logging on, etc.

The things I have to do 3x is loot, buy water (too lazy to trade it :P), repair, sell, equip new gear, turn in/accept quests, enter/leave bgs, etc :P Made me think there was me x3 sleeping in the same bed with my boyfriend lol Might have been a good thing for him ;) but made me go "wtf?? oh... dream... right... " lol

Anyway it has happened a couple times where I dreamed like this since starting the 5-box team, especially after 4+ hours play before bedtime.

There is a recognised medical condition for this.
It's called madness :D
During my morning waking cycle I often have problems getting out of bed, it gets even worse when my mind is still playing multibox tricks on me... getting up 3 times! As if one isn't enough!!!

but I remember thinking I needed to do something 3x
lol! now imagine 5x. i was half asleep as well, and remembered i needed to do something in work the following day...all i can tell is that i gave up the idea because 5x times would be painfull. next morning i was like laughing and saying: how the f*** i thought that way?

When i go multi boxing to single boxing it is a pain for me. I keep hitting the button for my alts to follow me everything i kill a mob or something. And the other thing is that stupid pause button. I do it every time that i am typing. In wow it is the worse, but when i go to work when i just start typing something (if i was doing something else, let when i come back from the bathroom) i hit the pause button.
On another note has anyone play games where the wasd are used and you try to use qwes as the keys instead. I so suck at games now cause i am use to strafing not turning.

I'm starting to notice I'm getting better at this. Being able to heal myself and party members while still being able to tank and do DPS. It's challenging to have to press different buttons with my left hand, different buttons with my right hand, and being able to watch what is going on in the game. It's like playing the piano or drums, gotta be able to do different things at once with your hands. :p

What is it about multiboxing that affected my brain so much that now I am waking up dreaming/anxious about having to do things five times???concentration while playing the game. you've trained your wetware to reflexively think beyond itself and to worry about the others. similar to muscle memory... but more like task memory. 'i did X... confirm X on others... check' IRL you can't confirm, and you get fidgety
for me, i'll exit the game, check the forums and have to respond to a message... hitting PAUSE first, of course... (doh! 8|)

I don't multibox enough for this to happen to me, which is probably a good thing. I can imagine being annoyed by someone on the street, then punching them and laughing as I wait for my group to nuke him down...

I have found myself nodding off at work only to snap up and start hitting alt+numpad 0 (big tank heals button). Also, I have found myself waking up in the morning wondering where all my clones were. Couldn't think of ever going back to solo play, seems like it would get boring not controlling everything going on.

I'm done some of this myself, more-so when I was doing the high warlord grind thou, Id be dreaming of pvp or wake up thinking I was still pvping. I realized when it was bad and I was at work thinking about how to get by ppl (like in wsg with the flag) and who to take first or I'd think of how to attack. I also played wow with certain songs playing and to this day, when i hear those songs i think of how i'd attack ppl with my toon. to this day certain songs just bring back flashes of images of wsg and AB.
Another example of too much wow is when your with your brother and sister (both wow players) and your in church for your cousins conformation and you start thinking of ways to pull the ppl on the alter in church, to clear to the priest (think Sm). Think The funny thing is we planned it out completely and my family was like traps, sheep what are you talking about..hunters what? good times:)

Next up: combine multiboxing with Guitar Hero. Press red to heal, blue to DPS, etc. It will sell millions.

New Hero ('http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath/features/bard/bardclass.xml') class in WotLK.
I know it was a joke, but with Guitar Hero fan base i wonder if they will ever do it. They did have a band that played last year in outlands.
