View Full Version : Focus follow mouse performance workaround.

After continued headaches with focus follow preformance issues (delay on changover, momentary loss of mouse pointer, frame rate drops) using the in-built Keyclone function I was using Octopus just to do this job. This is far from ideal.

I little research turned up the hidden X-Mouse functionality built into vista, a quick registry edit and you have full focus-follows-mouse over your entire operating system and it works beautifully over multiple sessions of WoW.

Details are here:
Registry Edit ('http://tomstricks.blogspot.com/2008/06/trick-to-enable-x-mousewindows-follow.html')

If you don't want the full X-Mouse changes (includes copy/paste changes and a few other tweaks) you can just add "1" to the key to get just focus-follows-mouse.

Does it require a reboot? I know there's a program or three that will setup vista like this for you with a check box, but they require a reboot... I used to LOVE X-Mouse behavior for XP because it saves a click when switching boxes, but it's not worth a reboot when I'm not in wow.

From TFA...
Since the changes made at Windows registry, a reboot is required to effect the changes.

So nevermind...

Just wanted to say I googled ZorbaTheGeek's suggestion and implemented a modified version based on this thread: http://shellrevealed.com/forums/thread/5726.aspx

Works amazing I must say. I would suggest all Vista users experiencing issues with 'focus follows mouse' take a look. I ended up setting my time delay to 10 milliseconds rather than 3000, and also implemented the focus follows mouse only option (+1) rather than the full bring to front version (+41) (so my hex dword was 99,12,03,80,10,00,00,00)

edit: if nothing else I like the fact that I can still manipulate the other WoW screens when one is loading or logging off.

This is awesome. I no longer get "stuck in mouselook" on my other windows and with no lag, it makes doing collect quests a breeze (assuming there is sufficient mob population/density.) Game-changing for me.

Have another problem with the mouse pointer, that all of the sudden, it finds itself on my other screen, or if I am unlucky holding down the right button turning my char 180 degres, is this something that might possibly fix that?

Rather than messing with your registry you can just go to Control Panel->Ease of Access Center->Make the mouse easier to use->Activate a window by hovering over it with a mouse

For windows XP you can get Tweak UI, which has an X-mouse feature.
