Lately a lot of people seem to make jokes in /2 by using skill or talent links, for example:
"Anal [Toughness] ftw!"
Can profanities in public chats get you penalized? Or does Blizzard not care about these things because there is a profanity filter available?
Personally I find these quite funny, but it kinda got out of hand last night, spam spam spam.

Yes is the ultimate answer - here's the link for the EU policy regarding inappropriate behaviour (I'm pretty sure it's the same or similar in the US):

Personally I find these quite funny, but it kinda got out of hand last night, spam spam spam.I report everyone who does this. It runs so rampant on Blackhand that I ultimately was getting frustrated by the lack of blizzard response so I petitioned as well with my concern. The GM advised me that everyone who gets reported DOES get actioned, even if it's just through the right click->report option. This means I'm personally responsible for around 200 people getting actioned I figure.
Now that said, the action is a "stop that fool" e-mail. One of my guildmates was laughing that he got written up for it... I nearly kicked him out of the guild over the fact that he had been doing it. /sigh.
It's not so much that it offends, if people wanted to do this in general I'd just leave the channel... but the trade channel DOES get used for trade far too often to just leave.

The GMs in the US CSF Forum said that repeat offenders have been actioned worse than just a "Stop that!" letter, people have been given vacations for it. Remind your guildie of the penalty volcano, the next time he's actioned it could be worse.
I report anyone who does it more than once. The CSF GMs for the US realms also said to go ahead and use the report spam feature, because it's so out of hand on so many servers.
I read in chat last night a bunch of meatheads who were saying they hoped it never stops. *sigh*. Every day, more and more, it seems like every 12 year old in the country is on my server - and not only will the Chuck Norris bullshit never die, this will also probably be around from now on.
That's why I turn my chat off more and more these days.

The first time I saw that I was laughing so hard I was crying. But yeah, after a while it got old. It doesn't really bother me if it's spammed, I don't pay attention to chat that much anyways.
But anytime someone randomly puts it out there, I can't help but laugh. I'm still 15 inside :) Same with Chuck Norris jokes.

Right click -> Report as spam -> Account action notification in their mailbox.
I am not one to report people, but when you can't see anything in trade because of this crap, I will do it with no remorse.
edit:
Grats to d0z3r for mentioning Chuck Norris, I have changed my avatar.

I do the same thing for people who spam post LFM in trade with multi line macros (7+ lines some times for the 25 man raids....)
/2 O hi, /1 is what you're look for since i'm trying to sell my [random item out of my bag]
right click, report x5

Happening on Silvermoon, Kilrogg and Nordrassil EU too....
I have zero tolerance for this crap and ignore all the usual suspects. I wouldn't ever wanna group with kiddies like this anyway, so it's a good thing really, after about 20 ignores or so, the spam fades and all is calm and peaceful again.
N.B. The prevalence of this stuff is directly correlated to kiddy school holidays too. It'll die down again come September.

I have to admit I laughed pretty hard on that one and I didn't see a need to report it either.
I hardly ever read the chat anyway, it's not like I'm sending myself messages.

There's a reason I leave /2 off unless I'm looking for an enchant ;)
The first time I saw this was during a kara run with the guildies in kara /1, it was funny as hell, but yeah it's old news now.
On a positive note the pugs we picked up for it never had such a great time in kara they told us after :D

I derive pleasure from seeing people whine about it, so yes, it is funny

Sad to see the de-evolution of today's society. I know its just a game and I know its a stupid joke, but its sad the way people jump on the stupidest bandwagons like sheep to slaughter. And the worst part is this...
I derive pleasure from seeing people whine about it, so yes, it is funny Pleasure from injecting your poor morals and tastes onto thousands of other people that are in the same game that then have to stop what they are doing to put you on ignore.
You can do what you want but stop damning me for my tastes in juvenile humor.

On my server, it's always [Malchazeen] and some witty (usually not) text around it.
Recently theres been more of it, as soon as people figured out they can link spells...
