View Full Version : Jewelcrafter + Alchemists = profit?

I have been doing a little bit of math-crafting, and came up with a few tid-bits about jewelcrafting/alchemy which may yield a neat profit when combined.

1) Adamantite ore sells for about 35-38 gold per stack on my server. That means about 9g per prospecting cast.

2) Prospecting adamantite yields on average 1.1 green gems, and 0.2 blue gems. On my server, the avg green gem value i guesstimated to be about 3-4g per. And Blue gems were about 40g per. 1.1*3.5 + 0.2*40 = 11.85g output per prospecting cast. This gives you a profit of 2.85 gold per prospecting cast, or 11.4 gold per stack of adamantite. The only problem then is "getting rid of" the products.

3) Earthstorm and skyfire diamonds can be transmuted once every 20 hours, and by my calculations the actual AH sell price seems to be about 40-60g profit per transmute, in addition to any procs coming from transmute spec. This seems to be a pretty good way of getting rid of green gems. These diamonds can then be sent back to the jewelcrafter who can cut them for another 20-50g markup!

4) With a bit of an initial investment of pattern-buying, you can cut all the blue gems you get and sell them for a 10g-15g markup.

So the end process for making money would be:

Buy up a ton of adamantite ore (buy anything below a threshold cost), prospect it. Buy a ton of primals (fire, air, water, earth), for transmuting diamonds.

Cut the blue gems and sell them
Send green gems and primals to alchemists, who will make earthstorm/skyfire diamonds.
Cut the earthstorms/skyfires and sell them.

Vendor Adamantite powder (or sell mercurial admanatite, depending on market)

I already have one alchemist, and *just* finished leveling 2 more up to 350. Haven't yet finished making them transmute spec yet (I will start as potion spec, then re-spec, as that is much cheaper than donating 4 primal mights)

I will update here once i find out just how profitable it is.

If it works out well, i think it will be a neat low-effort way to make gold without actually killing anything, =P

If it works out well, i think it will be a neat low-effort way to make gold without actually killing anything, =PDepends on your server, honestly. It's a complex profession, market-wise, and what pencils out and makes sense does not always happen in the game - I made a few calculations on metagems, and ended up with a pile of them that I could'nt sell for over what i paid for the raw gems, it took weeks to get rid of them just making my investment back.

I'm not saying don't do it, but be ready for the ups, AND the downs. if you're going to buy adamantite, remember that you can get serious streaks of getting crap gems from stack after stack.

The market can change too, very quickly. I managed to corner the market on a few cuts to get my epic flyer, I nailed down two cuts for 3 solid weeks, but only by being extremely aggressive towards undercutters - I set a sell price for cuts, and a max price for raw gems, and I'd log on 3 times a day, buy all raws, buy out undercutters, and then relist them, and my own stock, never more than 10 of a cut at a time. I also mined and added to my stockpile that way. It was VERY profitable, I had many 1000g days, but it was way too much work to do all of the time - you'll spend most of your time at the AH if you want your plan to work, because chances are, every time you list something, 3-4 other people will undercut you by 10% or more (especially with Auctioneer) every time. Once you start buying out the ones 10% below your price, they get wind of it and start doing it intentionally, because they know you'll buy them out. Short term, it's a risk, long term...I don't even want to think about it.

So...if you try this, have a large bankroll set aside to support it. The way to win at the AH game is to bring a stake to the table, a couple thousand or so, to fund your market control. I can't see making any money on a regular basis using your plan, without buying out all raw gems, and buying out undercutters. You'll also need to be logging on several times a day, especially weekends.

Be careful buying cuts. The *really* profitable ones are BOP, and gotten in heroics and above, and the really good ones that are BOE are *really* expensive, and have a lot of competition from badge gems and such. Adamantite powder and mercurial adamantite are a touchy market, sometimes it sells, sometimes it's doesnt. I could never get a feel for those, honestly.

Neat? Yes! The big paydays are awesome, it was great to come out of AV or a heroic and have 1000g waiting. Low effort? No way - it was *work*. Your plan will take as much. The *only* way to profit is to control the market, and that takes a lot of time and a lot of gold.

With Jewel crafting I make 1k gold a day. There is two veins that spawn by Dawstone village in Quel that I mine for about 1 hour or so. I get about 100-130 ore of Adamantite, a stack or two of Khorium, 2-3 stacks of Eterenium (sp), about 10 primal earths, 1 primal fire, 2 primal mana (from killing the sentries between the two spots, tons of cloth off the undead guys, varied greens and vendor junk.

The veins spawn 2-3 min apart from each other once mined (There is also another spot on the way to the bombing run that spawns every 3 1/2, usually Rich Adamantite vein. But on my server its useless because it is camped by a guy that works from home, so he is there for 8 hours a day)

The ore usually yields 1 blue gem per stack
I use the green gems to make the JC glass which yeilds a blue gem or a chance at an epic gem.
The primal earth i sell of 65-80g per stack of ten
Primal mana goes for 35-50g per
Primal fire is 35-60 per
Khorium bar -stack of 20 sells for 100+
Etern 1g per bar
The vendor loot usually rounds out to about 50-100g

So you really don't need to buy ore off the ah, plus you can buy 10 stacks of ore and run a streak where you only receive 2 blue gems from a 10 stacks of Adamantite ore. It is kinda of a crap shoot sometimes when you prospect ore. I have gotten a blue gem off of every prospect for 5 stacks of ore and there were times where I only received 1 blue gem every 5 prospecting turns. But you are correct Jcing is very profitable.

IF you box, why not take advantage of all the great ways to make money through trade skills?

Transmute spec alchemy is imho one of the best ways to make money. it takes about 130-140 sanguine hibiscus to go from friendly to revered for the primal earth to primal water transmute. If you buy the primal earth at (on my server anyway) about 5g per and transmute them to a primal earth, completely disregarding transmute proc chance, you net gain about 15-20g. if you also add int he 10% chance to proc anywhere from 1-4 extra, thats alot of money if you're doing it on 4 or 5x toons and all you had to do is click a button.

Other than transmuting, gathering skills are super for money. mining nets you adamantite ore that sells for 20-24g a stack to jcers, skinning can get you thick clefthoof leather, cobra scales and such that sells for alot. herbing has its benefits as herbable mobs have a high drop rate of primal lifes.

of course everything is always personal preference.

my 5 shaman tradeskills are as follows
Alchemy Mining
Alchemy Skinning
Alchemy Herbalism
Alchemy Jewelcrafting
Alchemy Enchanting

I picked up jewelcrafting not for the benefit of making money off of it, I just like to be self reliant and I hate looking for someone to cut my gems or prospect some of the ore if i have it laying around.

I got 375 JC on my main with practically every recipe there is, exept for some meta's. I'm thinking about lvling alchemy on all 4 of them to transmute 4 earthstorms a day + cutting them is around 380g profit if i can sell 4 of them each day. Besides that the sorcerer's alchemist stone is a very nice trinket to start with (passive 63 spell damage)

I have 6 characters but I am 5 boxing. I have a maxed rep Jcer with mining, 2 tailors and alchemist (soon to be max when they hit 55), herbalist/leather worker, tailor/enchanter and a skinner/ soon-to-be inscriptions. I plan on pumping out cloth, transmutes, cobra hide/cleft patches, enchants to sell on the ah (I am gonna love the inscription scrolls) and continue with the mining. But once a week, I plan on visiting the old world and gather up as much leather, herbs and ore as I possible can and gouge the hell out of the AH >.<
