Hey Multiboxers!: My most successful Official Forum Thread.
Class Setups
I don't have a level cap Pair of 70's yet, but these are the setups I am working on and plan to use at cap and beyond.
I've never been a big fan of casters so all of my setups are melee or melee/hybrid. Traditionally melee classes are not viewed as optimal classes to multi-box with, and they do take a different way of thinking about things but all in all it works.
Whisperwind US
Druid/Druid (feral)
Surgeon and a Doctor, Turkk and Daorian
This is my highest pair of characters that I started from level 1 dual-boxing
I'm treating these as a working pair, in that I plan on them being a main focus in WotLK. Because of that both have Engineering for Jumper Cables, Seaforium Charges and T5-quality head. One of the Druids major downfalls (for dual-boxing) is the lack of an OOC Rez so I'm using Engineering to combat that. I Mine from the main and skin from the alt using this skinning macro
The trick in PVE with this paring is:
- Get on either side of the mob and spam Shred. This will trade agro between the mobs letting the focused toon build energy, while the rear toon builds agro via Shreds
- After hitting level 50 be sure to apply a mangle debuff ever 6 seconds
- When you have 4 or more combat points end with Furious Bite (if you think it will kill them or are Bleed immune) or Rip if the fight will last longer.
Paladin/Shaman
Durring the leveling process I'm using Guilo and sometimes Hauss for Boosting Huilo. With Guilo I run run Huilo thru instances using Paladin AOE Grinding/Tanking.
- At 8 I took them to Ragefire Chasm.
- When leveling got too slow we moved to The Deadmines (around 13-15 I believe)
- 20-40 has been in Scarlet Monastery
- 45-60 will be in Stratholme and/or Scholomance
When Huilo gets to 60, I'm going to respec Guilo to Retribution and boost him thru questing.
The reason I went with this pair was simply because they complement each other in a great number of ways. Both Shaman and Paladin classes, are at their core support classes. Lets say they are 3/4 their main function and 1/2 their off function. Well I believe things like, Blessing of Kings/Might, Windfury Totem etc will overlap turning them into solid DPSers and decent healers just by being grouped together.
In addition to the utility that they offer each other, having abilities pairings like Storm Strike/Crusader Strike and Shocks/Judgments means I can consolidate my active keys increasing their efficiency and synergy as a pair.
Hunter/Rogue
I did these as an experiment to see what a melee and melee/ranged setup would do. Overall was very pleased with the situation.
The general tactic was to park the Hunter a short distance from the mob and send the pet and Rogue in to fight. I would let the pet get the first hit and agro then go into ambush/backstab with the Rogue. If the Hunter drew agro (the mob was usually dead before it got to her) I would spam this macro:
/cast Raptor Strike /castrandom Counterattack, Mongoose Bite /cast Wing Clip /castrandom [target=pettarget,exists] Kill Command /script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
This works even before you get Kill Command and will cast Raptor Strike whenever it is available can spam wing clip while you wait. It works particularly well with 3/3 Improved Wing Clip from the Survival tree.
Ultimately I believe this class setup could be played from either toon once the Rogue has Shadowstep, but the Hunter is much more fire and forget and works better as an Alternate
Hunter/Druid
I have a hunter and a druid on each account so this could be Kaelie and Turkk or Hauss and Daorian
- My Hunter(s) and Druid(s) are not in the correct level range to test this setup, but I believe it will be played like Hunter/Rogue with the Rogue as the main.
Ravenholdt US
Hunter/Hunter
Armory hasn't updated yet, but their names are Nock and Fletching, male and female Tauren Hunters
- This pair plays like any ranged pair or any Hunter
- Neither of them have any kind of healing or Rez, so it is more important to play safe, and know when to run. 2x Feign Death will help with this.
Setup
Computer
- I dual-box both instances on my laptop
- I usually use just the laptop screen and touch pad, Occasionally (for pvp mostly) I use a 5 button mouse as well.
- I play in windowed mode with my main taking up 3/5ths of the screen and the alt the remaining 2/5ths.
Keys
- I use Octopus for my key cloning software.
- I've considered using AutoHotKey to replicate mouse wheel ticks and extra button clicks in addition to the keyboard
- No luck replicating relative mouse position or clicking to the two windows on the same computer/screen
Key Bindings
- I use Bongos and the following 20 Keys for bindings
- ~123456
- QERTY
- FGH
- ZXCVBN

User Interface
Images coming as soon as I can figure out how to upload them.
The basic idea here, is that I have one computer, and run Warcraft Windowed on the same monitor. Optimally I would like two monitors but play from my laptop and don't always have access to multiple screens. In order to see everything and get as much data from each toon as possible, I used Bongos to move the minimap's so that they were touching when the main screen was active, and I used Pitbull to move the unit frames together so looking in one place I can see what the main and alt have targeted, healths etc.
I decided to set up the general layout around the idea of the Focus Frame rather than the party frame so that I can potentially set focus on a different character and let them handle positioning and targeting of the alt while I still fire off abilities. I've found this method to be very useful while boosting alts with my Paladin, by bringing a friend and setting my alt to focus him, freeing me to do my Pulling/AOE etc.
Dual-boxing Melee Tactics
Images coming when I figure out how to upload them.
In general I like to play different class setups rather than two of the same class. I feel like many times Druids play like two different classes depending on their current role. Because of this style of playing I have a metric ton of abilities to place on my bars. So as often as possible I like to combine those abilities into macros that have the same purpose.
For Example
- Crusader Strike and Storm Strike
- Judements and Shocks
- Bear Mangle and Cat Mangle
- Shred and Eviscerate
- Mounting
- etc
What this allows me to do is take the 20 keys I use for key binding and consolidate combat abilities into as tight of an area as possible, both in space and time.
Since most of the pairings are melee there is an inherent positioning and latency issue associated with this play style. There are, however, a few things you can do to combat these issues
- Run thru the mob, and spin around, leaving the following character behind the mob. This has the added benefit that when the mob changes who it agros, the toon in the rear can not have their attacks blocked or parried.[1]
- Run up to the mob, stop, and have your alt run a further toward the mob. A decent tactic if you are able to control the alts positioning fairly easily.
- Run up to the mob and back up a short distance toward your alt(s). Another good tactic, just be sure not to back up too far or your alt will turn away from the mob.
- Have your alt pull using a ranged attack and let the mob run thru you towards the alt. This can be useful in high latency situations to be sure the mob is in position and can be hit by all members of the party.
Dual-boxing melee isn't as hard as some might think, and after playing with it for a little while you might find it more rewarding to fight with combinations that go against the norm (as much as multi-boxing can have a norm)
