IRC - Internet Relay Chat
IRC is a form of internet chat, its instant like IM however you join a server which is filled with channels. Dual Boxing has its own IRC Channel, to join it there are 2 ways.
* Via the Dual Boxing Website : Here * Downloading a chat client and configuring it as needed.
For People who understand IRC the following settings are where you can find us:
* Server : irc.quakenet.org * Channel: #multiboxing
You can either use an IRC client that runs in your webbrowser like http://www.mibbit.com/ or you can download a normal application for your desktop.
If you want to setup a perminant home to hang out with your boxing friends ill go into a bit more detail on howto download a user friendly client and a basic setup for it.
The program we're going to use is called mIRC, its one of the most simple and popular chat clients available and its been around for a very long time
After downloading the client, you are required to setup your identity and also server details.
IRC guidelines
Please understand that the chat channels are not a helpdesk. We will not guide you through every step of multiboxing, because we create and maintain these wiki pages for that. If you have specific issues that you can't resolve here or at the forums, you're welcome to ask for help on IRC. It should be noted that the IRC channel should be considered not safe for work, as we cannot guarantee what topics will be brought up.
The mIRC client
Step 1 - Setting Up
When opening mIRC you should have a box open up straight away with a guys face on it, you can close that. The next box which should open is your setting and server box, if this hasnt opened click File / Select Server
On the left hand side of the dialog box that opened you will see a long list of settings, dont be afraid we dont need to change many. Make sure your on the connect tab.
The details you enter need not to be anything serious, in "Full Name" enter whatever you like, boxingwiki is fine, just anything works.
In "Email Address" the same rule applies, put something like "Dual-Boxing@"
"Nickname" and "Alternative Nickname" are pretty self explanatory, however these 2 names MUST be different.
These settings will be saved.
Next we have to setup the server. Because you want to connect to the same server and chat channel as everyone else these settings need to be pretty particular, so here they are.
Click Servers on the left hand side, just under the connect tab.
Then click Add
The description you can put in is "Quakenet"
The IRC Server is "irc.quakenet.org"
And finally, the port is "6667"
No group or password fields need to be added.
Step 2 - Connecting & Joining
Go ahead and click back on the Connect tab
And then click the button Connect to Server
You will notice a whole bunch of jargon scroll down your window, and at the end you will get a little bit of green writing saying Local Host and then it has your Local host and IP address.
Now we can join our chat channel, do this by typing "/join #multiboxing" /join is a simple command used for joining channels, and #multiboxing is the channel we're joining, the # is required.
Step 3 - Understanding IRC
Basically we have a very simple layout. Over on the right hand side there are the people who are in the channel, alot of these people will be idle, not responding, afk, etc.
Down the bottom you have a small, long field where you can write in, this is the chat pane and you can write what you please and then you will notice it comes up in the middle window.
The middle, main window is the chat log, it will tell you when people join and leave the channel aswell as what people are saying.
So now there you have it, idle if you like, or even come in for a chat its all fun!
