The Death Knight is the first hero class in WOW and is available to any race. It is intended to make any Death Knight a viable tank regardless of where talent points are spent.
The Death Knight starts in Ebon Hold, a Citadel floating above Eastern Plague Lands. Ebon Hold, like much of the Death Knight Starter Experience, semi-instanced. Races from each faction will start in a faction instance of Ebon Hold and so you will not meet DKs of the other faction until you complete the starter quest chain.
The first NPC you meet is Arthas! He will give you your first quest and is only the first of many (in)famous characters you will interact with.
The Starter experience is worth doing even if you never intend to play a DK after "graduating". The DK starts with 0 talent points but gains 1,2 or 3 talents points with each quest (currently the final quest "Light of Dawn" awards 6 talent points but it is believed there will be a follow up quest which will divide these points). Highlights of the starter experience are:
- Killing the owner and capture of a Death Charger to become your Epic land mount @ 55 after about 3 or 4 quests
- The Murder of innocent towns people who live under the yoke of the Scarlet Crusade
- Mass murder of Scarlet Crusade (150) soldiers using cannon
- The execution of a former comrade in the name of Arthas
- Torture of Scarlet Crusade soldier to gain information
- Massacre of New Avalon from the back of a Frostbrood Vanquisher (Skeletal Dragon ;) )
All of this leads up to the piece de resistance "Dawn of Light" which pits the DK as one of the 10000 against the Argent Dawn's 300 in a replay of the 480BC Battle of Thermopylae. The scripting ending of which removes you from the thrall of Arthas and places you on the path to redemption.
