Default Heirlooms: Best way to get started?

First post here - so hello everyone!

I have a question regarding heirloom items. I am fairly new to multi-boxing and just got my first team of 1-brewmaster-monk/4-elemental-shammies just past 80 (83 to be exact). I want to take advantage of my RAF tripple-XP before it expires, so I am going to let this team sit here and gain rested XP while I level my next team. I am thinking of doing 5-druids.

Now my question isn't quite related to the above, but more over how to go about acquiring heirloom items for these teams? I do not have any toons at max level - so what's the best way to earn these items (and what's the best way to distribute them)? My guild just reached lvl 11 (it's my own guild - so I don't have access to all the heirloom items that are purchasable yet).

From my days prior to multiboxing, I have 1-of-each class at lvl 80, and two lvl 85s.

What is your strategy and priority for getting these items - say on a new account?

Thanks for any information you might have!

Well, there are three that can be purchased through your guild, but they are costly. The rest need justice or honor points which are very slow to accrue at lower levels. All but the three guild heirlooms stop working at 80, where you have the RAF boost anyway and the heirlooms only save you a few hours. 80-85 is where the guild heirlooms help you out and again you just buy them with gold. 85-90 heirlooms do nothing.

If you decide you want to grind out a set of 5 - buy cloth since any class can wear it and with 5 toons and inflated stats on heirlooms the type or armor and even stat is really irrelevant. I've wasted time and money on all plate heirlooms before and really regretted it.

As far as distributing the heirlooms, any faction, any character, any account - same realm, by mail only. If you have an 85 toon say on alliance on another account, but same realm, they can mail it to any other characters across your battle.net on the same realm.

heyaz - Thanks for the advice.

I suppose it might not be worth it to grind them out.

I'm in bit of a bind anyways as I did RAF with two pre-existing accounts (parent1->A, B; parent2->C), so I can't leverage the level granting to its full potential. My parent accounts already have 10-slots occupied - so a bit of transferring may be in order. I was hoping to make up for this disadvantage by just grinding out heirlooms - but if it only saves a few hours then it's not quite worthwhile.

If you have RaF bonus its not worth using the heirlooms unless all have the same ones. If one toon outlevels another (by 4 I think) then eventually that team loses the RaF bonus until they are closer to the same level.

I always found the heirlooms to be excessively expensive. Double that after an expansion is generally when leveling alts is at it's peak, but the new level caps just shoved the currency out of reach. What they need to do is just sell level coins for 4,000 points or something. Buy one and pass it to the alt and poof. Instant level 85 or whatever the level cap is for the previous expansion was.

Like it's been pointed out. A full set of gear only saves you a few hours leveling and it takes much longer than that to farm up the points.

I would bother to buy the guild heirlooms if you have the cash but not bother with the jp ones at all.

    Two things, on heirlooms.

If you do a server transfer, and the toon happens to be wearing (or have in inventory/bank) the heirlooms...
They move along with the character.
So you can transfer them across servers, for the cost of a paid character transfer.

    The heirlooms are decent gear.
Pretty much equivalent to a current level blue (rare) item.
I look at them as something that you get for heroics/battlegrounds, once you have everything else.
They do make later sets of toons, that much easier to level... which is a nice bonus.
But they take a while to get, and ultimately the amount of Justice/Honor you receive is slow until maximum level... which means, you cannot get the heirlooms (at a good pace), until you have at least one team that doesn't need them.
I would go for an entire set of Cloth Heirlooms, purely because 5x anything is going to kill stuff easily irregardless of wearing cloth (my 5x Death Knights ran around in Cloth Heirlooms, with zero issues).
It might be worthwhile getting the heirlooms once, but I wouldn't bother with a Cloth, Leather, Mail, Plate set, etc... while boxing (solo is a different story).

The other thing is... if you have RAF...

Level your first team to 85th.
Then use the parent account (A)...
    Whether its an A > B > C > D > E ... or A > B > C & A > D > E ... RAF chain.
The latter is preferable, but regardless an 85 can boost through Halls of Lightning (which is the last instance in the 1-80 chain).
And boosting is far superior leveling speed than pretty much anything else.

I lost 3 full sets of plate BoAs in the mail when i took a long break last year.. before that I had every spec covered..all items minus the rings from fishing. For me..ill never level any future alts without heirlooms.. not just for the exp.. but they make you little Gods. When i RaF though dungons.. i never quest to keep my gear at level, like a lot of people do, I just equip what drops in the dungons and from quests+ full heirlooms and I'm set. The stats are leaps and bounds above any content you will be running. Even though they are "rare" equivilant.. they make you feel epic ( in practice )
